Inaugural Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior to Launch 2011 ASP European Junior Series

CAPBRETON, France (Thursday, April 24, 2011) – The 2011 ASP European Pro Junior Series will kick-off in a couple of weeks with the inaugural ASP 3-Star Men’s Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior set to run along with the ASP 2-Star Women’s Rexona Pro Junior, from April 9 to 17, 2011.

Held at Reunion Island’s fun and high-performance location of Trois-Bassins, the event will be the stage to this year’s first European Junior top level battles, solid contenders and international Under-21 athletes gathering in the Indian Ocean to battle for crucial European ratings’ points.

“It’s great to bring the ASP tour back to Reunion Island and give both local and international rising surfers the opportunity to visit the island which has some of the world’s best waves,” event promoter Christophe Mulquin said. “With local surfers Maxime Huscenot, Adrien Toyon and Damien Chaudoy already renowned across the world, the mix of talents and performances should be of great quality.”

Opening one of the most consistent seasons for European Junior surfing with seven events confirmed already, the ASP 3-Star rating is a serious motivation towards the event title, a major step towards the season’s finish and qualification for the ASP World Junior Tour.

With European junior surfers being considered some the world’s best and led by reigning ASP Women’s World Junior Champion Alizee Arnaud (Capbreton, FRA), ASP Women’s World Junior No. 9 Justine Dupont (Lacanau, FRA), Maxime Huscenot (Reunion Island, FRA) and ASP World Junior No. 7 Marc Lacomare (Hossegor, FRA) , the show promises to be of high quality.

“I am super stoked to attend an event on my home island,’ said former ASP World Junior champion Maxime Huscenot. “I was to young when the last major ASP events took place in Reunion Island and I couldn’t compete. But it’s always been a dream to get the chance to surf in front of my friends and supporters.”

Huscenot, already expected as the main attraction amongst the European field of athletes confirmed for the prestigious competition, has climbed up the ranks from an early ASP European Junior title at 16 only, through to the ASP Star and Prime Series he now competes on full time. Having surfed a large variety of waves already, the Reunion Island raised athlete will be looking for a win.

“Reunion has some of the world’s best waves and I am looking forward to hitting the water with the contest rash vest on,” Huscenot added. “Trois-Bassins is an easy-to-read wave, offering both left and righthand possibilities. The scoring potential is usually more on the outside sections for both sides of the wave, with the left offering some walling-up sections up to the inside while the righthander rapidly hits the drier reef.”

With the levels of surfing pursuing an evolution towards progressive, flying maneuvers especially in the Junior ranks of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tours, Trois-Bassins is expected to allow some exciting surfing.

“The wave is easy to ride and slow enough to let any surfer unleash its best flying and fins-free moves,” finished Huscenot. “I really can’t wait to get on the competition and enjoy time at home.”
