Constable and Williams Claim ASP 1-Star Longboard Pro in Noosa
NOOSA, Queensland/Australia (Sunday, March 20, 2011) – Noosa’s favourite surfing son Josh Constable (Perigian Beach, Noosa) has claimed the 1 Star ASP Golden Breed Pro, cleaning up his competition in the small, clean surf at the event’s back up site of Access 12, during the Noosa Festival of Surfing today.
The five times Australian Men’s Longboard Champion and 2006 ASP Men’s World Longboard Champion proved unstoppable in the final, opening up with a cracker 7.50 (out of ten) ride and followed up with an excellent 8.00 ride to secure a huge lead over the rest of the field.
“Conditions were tough but I aimed to get off to a quick start, get a few waves under the belt and then wait for some better ones and it worked out well,” Constable said.
Constable surfed a smart heat in the tricky conditions. Mixing up his performance with skillful nose rides and massive off the top snaps, the powerful Sunshine Coast surfer provided just the kind of all round performance the judges were looking for, earning a well deserved 15.50 heat total (out of 20.00) to defeat Jared Neal (Aus), Taylor Jensen (USA) and Thomas Kibblewhite (NZL).
“You cant sit there and wish it was six foot ‘cos its not six foot,” Constable said. “I don’t mind if its small, I’m from here and we don’t get big waves anyway so I’m used to surfing little waves like that. I felt comfortable out there and just kept building momentum and I’m happy I came through with the win.”
Reaching his first ever final, Neal posted an impressive showing opting to surf the less frequent lefthanders that took him all the way to the beach and was rewarded with great 7.80 and 6.35 scores (out of ten).
“I’ve always struggled up here in Noosa so it was good to get out there and get a through a few heats,” Neal said. “We had the best longboarders in the world out here so it was good to get past a few of them although one more position would have been good.”
In the 1 Star ASP Revo Eyewear Women’s Pro it was Chelsea Williams (Tweed Heads, AUS) who stole glory from 2X ASP Women’s World Longboard Champion Jennifer Smith (USA), executing a perfect hang-ten maneuver to secure this year’s title.
While Smith held an early heat lead with two great 6.50 and 5.75 rides, Williams came from behind backing up her early 6.00 with a solid 6.90 to bump Smith from first to second, the pair defeating Isabelle Braly (Byron Bay, NSW) who finished in third while Bianca Anstiss (Currumbin, QLD) took fourth.
Noosa’s stylemaster Harrison Roach won arguably the most exciting heat of the day during the Sunshine Coast Noserrider Pro final, securing his first ever victory over a selection of the world’s best noseriders including Matt Cuddihy (Noosa), Taylor Jensen (USA) and defending event Champion Christian Wach (USA).
Roach who has made four finals but never taken the crown, rode two amazing waves on the nose, performing his trademark soul arch to win the heat in front of his home crowd .
“I’m so excited I can’t even believe it,” Roach said after his win. “I’ve been surfing in this event since I was 16, this is my fourth final and finally to win one – I’m so excited. I was screaming out there, I had all my friends on the beach so it’s a great way to do it.”
Rahn Goddard of West Australia took a surprise victory in the Smorgasboarder Magazine Old Mal division, choosing to sit on the far left peak away from the rest of the field, his solid wave selection and good drop knee cut-backs earned him a 12.85 heat total to finish ahead of Luke Potter (Qld), Harrison Roach (Qld), Isaac Fields (Aus), Isabelle Braly (NSW) and Matt Chojnacki (NSW).
Jordie Brown (Skenes Creek, Vic) won the Open Men’s Amateur division with ease, racing ahead of the field to take the win over Ben Jones (SA) in second and Damien Farago (NSW) in third.
Erin Dark (NSW) secured a narrow victory over second place surfer Monique Keen (Qld) with Molly Powell (Vic) placing third in the Open Women’s Amatuer division.
