Josh Constable Charges into Final at Golden Breed Men’s Pro in Noosa
Former ASP World Longboard Champion Josh Constable advancing into the Final of the ASP 1-Star Golden Breed Men's event.
NOOSA, Queensland/Australia (Thursday, March 17, 2011) – Noosa’s own Josh Constable (Peregian Beach) produced yet another phenomenal showing at the Noosa Festival of Surfing presented by Global Surf Industries today, winning his semifinal heat of the 1 Star ASP Golden Breed Mens Pro to advance into the final.
Fresh off winning the Hyundai Pro Longboard Tour Title in New Zealand, the 2006 ASP World Longboard Champion proved he’d be the man to beat in Sunday’s final, netting a pair of good to excellent scores in the small, tricky conditions on offer at the event’s backup site Access 12.
“It is tough out there but there are a few sneaky rights down the bottom of the bank, I just tried to aim for those ones, got a few scores and came through with the win. It feels good to make the final,” Constable said.
Opening up with a solid 7.00 ride (out of 10.00), Constable’s huge off-the-top maneuvers saw him race ahead of the field, stamping his authority on the last wave of the heat with an 8.25 to advance ahead of Jared Neal (AUS), eliminating Bowie Pollard (AUS) and Jackson Close (AUS) from the event.
“Its going to be a good final, its Jarred Neals first final here at Noosa, Thomas Kibblewhite has been ripping over on the New Zealand tour and Taylor is right on form. Hopefully we all get good waves and the best surfing wins.”
Defending event champion Taylor Jenson (USA) threw his board around with precision and power, his skilled nose-riding earning him a 5.65 opener that he backed up with a solid 6.1 to secure victory over advancing second place surfer Thomas Kibblewhite (NZL).
“It’s definitely luck of the draw out there, the ocean picks its winner,” Jenson said. “I was just trying to stay busy catch and as many waves as I could, the more waves you get the better your chances in conditions like this.”
Jenson and Kibblewhite will meet Constable and Neal in the final while 2009 ASP World Longboard Champion Harley Ingleby (AUS) and Troy Mothershead (USA) were forced to settle for equal fifth and seventh places respectively.
The Revo Eyewear 1 Star ASP Women’s event saw traditional style match high performance surfing, with Old Mal stylist Isabelle Braly (Byron Bay, NSW) and ASP World Champion Jen Smith (USA) securing wins in their respective semifinal heats.
Returning to her old faithful single-fin old mal shape longboard, Braly proved a clear standout topping the scoreboard with a pair of 6.75s to advance in first place ahead of Bianca Anstiss (AUS); the pair eliminating local surfer Kelly Winter (Noosa) and Jade Foster (AUS) from the event.
“This board has a more cruisy disposition and gets me through the tricky areas,” Braly said. “Its really a refined Old Mal, I ride a lot of these boards, I love them!”
Braly will take on Anstiss, World Champion Jen Smith and multiple times Australian Champion Chelsea Williams on Sunday’s and is confident her unique approach will see her through.
“I just do what makes me happy, I surf the way that makes me feel good. Sometimes I win, sometime I lose first round, but its worked so far so I’ll just keep on doing what I’m doing as long as I’m having fun!”
Meanwhile Smith’s bigger, more progressive maneuvers were as recognized by the judges who awarded her with a solid 6.00 score for an early heat lead. Smith solidifed her win off a smaller 4.5 to finish ahead of Chelsea Williams (AUS) while defending champion Crystal Dzigas (HAW) suffered a disappointing elimination placing equal fifth overall, Nava Young equal seventh.
The first round of the Laguna Bay Longboards Standup Paddle Pro saw some exciting performances from some of the best SUP practitioners around Australia.
Pro longboarder Jackson Close (QLD) proved an all round waterman posting the day’s top heat score of a 16.00 (out of 20.00). Close earned a 7.75 opener followed by an excellent 8.25 to advance ahead of Ross Phillips(Qld), Greg Sunderland (Qld) and Paul Jones (Qld).
Ben Apps (NSW) proved similarly skilled winning his round 1 heat with a solid 15.00 heat-total over Craig Munro (NSW), Will Cousins (Vic) and Anthony Collet (Qld).
Beau Nixon’s (NSW) fantastic aerial maneuver saw him post the day’s top single wave score of an 8.90, advancing in first with 14.50 points ahead of Justin Holland (NSW), Andy Davies (NSW) and Hayden Stintman (QLD).
Also advancing were Geoff Breen (Qld), Mathew Lumley (Vic), Noel Graham (NSW), Woogie Marsh (Qld), Andrew Prowd (Qld) and Roger Saunders.
The Noosa Festival of Surfing continues with U18 Boys, U15 Boys, Old Mal, U18 Girls and the Nose Rider event on Friday.
