Stephanie Gilmore Confirmed for Roxy Pro Gold Coast, Probable Start Tomorrow
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, four-time ASP Women’s World Champion, will start her 2011 ASP Women’s World Title campaign at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover.
GOLD COAST, Queensland/Australia (Friday, February 25, 2011) – Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 23, reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion and defending event winner, has confirmed her attendance at the Roxy Pro Gold Coast presented by Land Rover, the opening stop of the 2011 ASP Women’s World Title season.
Gilmore, who was the victim of a vicious assault in late December, has been recovering from injuries with little time in the water. However, the iconic natural-footer is prepared for a fresh start at the Roxy Pro.
“My head has healed fine and hopefully I’m in the final stages of my wrist healing,” Gilmore said. “It’s been about six weeks, but I’m yet to have a surf as I haven’t received the go ahead from the doctors. I’ll be sure to have some extra support for my wrist whilst competing and it’ll be fine. My goal this season is to change the drama that ended 2010 plus so many things have happened in the last few months I haven’t even had the time to think about the tour, so I’m extremely excited to have almost a fresh beginning to my career at this point.”
This fresh beginning comes in the form of a new relationship with global powerhouse Quiksilver.
“I am officially a brand ambassador for Quiksilver. The main reasons are, not only is change fresh and interesting, but I believe this is an opportunity to work with the really ambitious and creative family at Quiksilver to elevate my profile globally and to develop my career in the best direction possible.”
Unable to surf until only recently, Gilmore is excited about the opportunity to get back into the water and back into the singlet.
“I’ve been tortured by only watching it pump many times already this year so I’ll finally be able to get out there and have it with only one other girl,” Gilmore said. “No negatives in that situation.”
Gilmore will take on Tyler Wright (AUS), 17, and Trials Winner Sarah Mason (NZL), 16, in the opening round of competition.
Event organizers will convene tomorrow morning at 6:30am to assess conditions for a possible 7:30am start.
