Renato Galvao Leads as Hobgoods Fall at ASP PRIME Hang Loose Pro

CACIMBA DO PADRE, Fernando de Noronha, Pernambuco / Brazil (Thursday, February, 17, 2011) - The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Event Hang Loose Pro Contest restarted today with better but smaller waves. With 3 to 4 feet well shaped waves on offer the surfers started competing earlier on this Thursday, with the first heat entering the water at 7am. The organization’s goal was to to complete Round 1 in the morning and resume competition at 1pm during the high tide.
Before the end of the day, the infamous Cacimba do Padre was already producing some 6 foot waves, mostly spiting left hand barrels. Despite the wave’s best conditions showing at high tide, Renato Galvao set the contest’s highlight on the lower tide. He debuted in the second heat of the day and surfed the best barrel on the rights of Cacimba do Padre, scoring a near-perfect 9.5 out of 10, the highest single-wave score of Hang Loose Pro competition.
“The smaller waves sometimes were more predictable”, said Renato Galvao. “I caught a nice lefthander at first, but I decided take a chance on the rights, and then that wave came, I paddled really hard for it, took off and tried to stay as deep as possible within the tube, and I made it, unreal. I got to thank God for that.”
Australia’s Mitchel Coleborn, who was a Round 1 standout, was defeated by Japanese competitor Masatoshi Ohno along with the Brazilian ASP World Tour Rookie Alejo Muniz in the opening heat of the round of 48.
Yesterday’s top performer, Wiggolly Dantas, wasn’t lucky today and found no tubes and was eliminated by South African Travis Logie and Parana’s Jihad Khodr in heat Heat 5 of the Round of 48.
During the afternoon the waves were already far more challenging, with 4-6 feet and even larger series, those who came closer to Renato Galvao’s 9.50 score were the Irish Glenn Hall the and South African Rudy Palmboom. Glenn Hall scored an 8.33 for a big left hand barrel right in front of the Cacimba do Padre Cliff, while Rudy Palmboom took an 8.90 on the rights of Bode Beach, in the last heat of this Thursday.
“I love this place, it’s my favorite in Brazil”, said Glenn Hall, after his win over Fredrick Patacchia, who defeated former Hang Loose Pro Champion Jean da Silva. “The wave I got was amazing, but I think I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time. The conditions are not the best here, but the waves are fun, with beautiful tubes, you only need to find them.”
South African Rudy Palmboom managed to put his name among the 24 best surfers after threading the needle on a beautiful barrel.
“I spent the whole heat looking for a good ride,” Palmboom said. “When I saw that a-frame wave, I knew it would turn out to be a good barrel. I waited for the wave form and held myself inside the tube as long as I could. I felt that it would be hard to make it, but got out and it was fantastic. I am very happy because I love this place. To me, it’s the best wave in Brazil and it’s good that I’m still in the contest.”
Of the ASP Dream Tour elite surfers on the 2011 Hang Loose Pro Contest, only three remain in the competition at Fernando de Noronha in the fight for the $ 40,000 prize money and 6,500 points in the ASP World Ranking. They are Hawaiian Fredrick Patacchia and Brazilians Alejo Muniz and Heitor Alves. The Hobgood brothers were eventually defeated by the new generation, which showed attitude in the heavy sets of Cacimba do Padre.
Brazilians Miguel Pupo and Luel Felipe, both juniors surfers, put an end to C. J. Hobgood’s chances to win for the second time at Fernando de Noronha. C. J. was beaten along with the Spanish Gony Zubizareta. C.J’s twin brother, Damien Hobgood, also finished last in the next heat, behind young Puerto Rican Dylan Graves and Brazil’s Gabriel Medina, with Marlon Lipke from Germany finishing in third. The last two waged an intense dogfight for second place and the Brazilian surfer won the battle. Medina had already ridden a good barrel and confirmed his way through to the next round with an air.
