Star Studded Press Conference Kicks Off ASP 6-Star Hurley Pro Junior on Australia Day
GOLD COAST, Queensland/Australia (Wednesday, January 26, 2011) – The 6-Star, Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) USD$50,000 Hurley Pro Junior kicked off in style today, with a star-studded press launch and plenty of high-performance surfing action at Burleigh Heads on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
1978 and 1988 World Surfing Champions Wayne Bartholomew and Barton Lynch joined ASP World Junior Champion Jack Freestone (Coolangatta, Qld), Cooper Chapman (Narrabeen, NSW), 2010 defending event champion Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW), Kai Hing (Wurtulla, Qld), Conner Coffin (Santa Barbra CA, USA) and Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL, USA) as a enthusiastic media gallery helped officially launch 2011’s event.
In the water, it was American duo Conner Coffin (Santa Barbra CA, USA) and Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL, USA) who shone brightest on day-one.
Coffin scored an impressive 11.25 (out of a possible 20) in his opening round heat, defeating Shane Holmes (Brekley Vale, NSW – 8.05) and Will Morrison (Currumbin, Qld – 6.70) who finished second and third respectively.
Meanwhile Geiselman showed the Australian crowds why he’s so highly touted, defeating Tristan Guilbard (France – 6.90) and Jake Bracken (Cronulla, NSW – 3.65) who finished second and third respectively.
Held in the iconic waves of Burleigh Heads on Queensland’s Gold Coast, the Hurley Pro Junior is one of the most prestigious junior surfing events in the world, boasting a world record USD$25,000 first place cheque.
The January 26-30 competition window of the Hurley Pro Junior saw the event kick off amidst the celebrations of Australia’s national day, bolstering the already festival style atmosphere associated with Hurley surfing events.
