Billabong ASP World Junior Championships is ON, Winner Decided Today

NORTH NARRABEEN, New South Wales/Australia (Saturday, January 15, 2011) – The final day of the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships is LIVE this morning in two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at North Narrabeen and both the event champion and 2010 ASP World Junior Champion will be decided today.

The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships represents the final stop on the inaugural ASP World Junior Tour, with the first stop unfolding at the Oakley ASP World Pro Junior in Bali. The ASP World Junior Tour hosts the planet’s finest under-21 surfing talent who battle for the prestigious title of ASP World Junior Champion.

“Although the ideal swell we were expecting didn’t materialize, we’ve still got plenty of waves on offer to get competition back up and running,” Pritamo Ahrendt, Billabong ASP World Junior Championships Head Judge Said. “We’ll look to start competition by 10am and will be crowning a new ASP World Junior Champion by this afternoon.”

Surfers still in the running for the 2010 ASP World Junior Title include current rankings leader, Freestone, current ASP World Junior No. 2 Dale Staples (ZAF), 20, who needs to advance into the Semifinals to overtake Freestone, Caio Ibelli (BRA), 16, Mitch Crews (AUS), 20, Nat Young (USA), 19, and Kiron Jabour (HAW), 20.

The Billabong ASP World Junior Championships holds a waiting period from January 8 through 16, 2011 and is webcast LIVE via http://www.billabongpro.com.

As the Quarterfinalists were being decided at the Billabong ASP World Junior Championships fueled by Monster Energy, competitors and others involved in the event were also focused on the devastating flooding that was impacting the state of Queensland.

Event sponsor Billabong committed $50,000 to the Premier’s Flood Relief Appeal and, through the Rush Surf retail banner, is planning to donate clothing to needy communities.

Anyone wishing to make a donation to the Queensland Government’s flood appeal can visit http://www.qld.gov.au/floods/donate.html

The Billabong ASP World junior Championships fuelled by Monster Energy is made possible with the support of Sony, Volkswagon, VonZipper, Nixon, Australia’s Surfing Life Magazine, Warringah Council and NSW Sport and Recreation.
