Championship Moves and Evo Pro Junior Opens ASP Australia’s 2011 season
TORQUAY, Victoria/Australia (Tuesday, January 4, 2011) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) season opened for 2011 at Jan Juc beach on Victoria’s Surfcoast at the Championship Moves and Evo Pro Juniors in high performance 1m (3 feet) surf.
International surfers served it right up to the Australian’s headed by Indonesia’s Putra Hermawan (Lombongan). The super fast and fluid 18 year-old won through his opening two heats defeating highly fancied Queensland surfer Thomas Woods along the way.
“The cold water is hard for me to deal with but once I get a few waves I feel good out there” said Putra.
“Each heat gets a little more comfortable for me so I’m feeling good and the waves are good for competing in.”
Queensland’s James Wood also surfed superbly today. In his final year on the Pro Junior circuit, Woods is focused on a great season.
“I placed 7th overall on the ratings last year and just missed out on the ASP World Pro Junior Series but this year that’s my goal – qualify and try and win the whole series” said Woods.
Other standouts today included Matt Banting (NSW), Vasco Riberio (Portugal), Creed McTaggart (WA) and Jake Sylvester (NSW).
While Australia and many of the world’s best 20 year and under surfers ripped up the semi clean waves, most of the media attention focused on recently elected Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu who attended the event to announce and support the great Championship Moves sponsorship which is involved in this event and through Surfing in general over the coming two years in Victoria.
Ambassadors to the program included two of Victoria’s esteemed ASP surfers in Adam Robertson and Jack Perry who chatted at length about the Championship Moves program and finished up with a fun body surf next to the competition venue.
“The Championship Moves campaign encourages young Victorian men to look after their mates and help stop alcohol-related violence,” Mr Baillieu said.
“Surfing is very popular among young men and this partnership with Surfing Victoria will help remind people that while everyone has the right to a good time, real champions always look out for their mates.”
Both Robertson and Perry echoed the Premiers remarks saying -”This is a seriously good message to spread throughout the community – we all love to enjoy ourselves and go out to parties but we know we need to care for each other, just like we do when we surf big waves or remote locations – it’s a socially responsible thing to do and we’re all for it” said both surfers.
A big opening day with the opening rounds of the Evo Pro Junior Women’s round one heats also planned to be surfed late in the day and the good surf is expected to maintain right through tomorrow at Jan Juc beach with the event scheduled for an 8:00am start.
Finals at this stage might be surfed through Thursday morning to best capitalize on this current swell.
