ASP Top 17 Eye Vans Triple Crown Title at O’Neill Women’s World Cup Sunset Beach
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion, eyes her third, consecutive Vans Triple Crown title at the upcoming O’Neill Women’s World Cup at Sunset Beach.
SUNSET BEACH, Oahu/Hawaii (Monday, November 22, 2010) – The 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour season will culminate with the final event of the year, the O’Neill Women’s World Cup of Surfing, at Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore from November 24 through December 6, 2010.
With the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title all wrapped up, the world’s best female surfers have their sights set on the prestigious Vans Hawaiian Triple Crown of Surfing crown.
Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, reigning four-time ASP Women’s World Champion and defending two-time Vans Triple Crown winner, picked off the opening event of the ASP Specialty Series, the Cholo’s Women’s Hawaiian Pro, at Haleiwa last week and is now firmly in the driver’s seat to collect her third Hawaiian title.
“I’ve got a long way to go before I win the Triple Crown, but it’s rad,” Gilmore said. “It’s the next best thing to the World Title, but I’m looking forward to just trying my best and hopefully winning.”
After sealing her fourth ASP Women’s World Title at the previous event in Puerto Rico, Gilmore admits to feeling less pressure this Hawaiian season, a welcome addition to her North Shore campaign.
“I’m definitely a bit more relaxed going in to the Hawaiian events this year,” Gilmore said. “I’ve never been in this position before where I can just show up in Hawaii and not have to compete for a World Title. It’s rad. I’m really relaxed and I feel like it’s paying off in my heats. I’m relaxed and feel in rhythm.”
Coco Ho (HAW), 19, current ASP Women’s World No. 8, has had an extremely consistent year in 2010, and relishes in the fact that she is able to complete the season at home in Hawaii.
“I’m super psyched to have the Triple Crown and be at home,” Ho said. “It’s amazing to go from event to event and then have three events right by my house to finish the year. I’m probably one of the luckier girls.”
Ho will draw upon her lifetime of experience at Sunset Beach as she battles the world’s best surfers for the O’Neill World Cup of Surfing.
“Growing up there (Sunset Beach) I’ve seen all types of conditions and know what to expect,” Ho said. “My Dad is really good out there and helps me.”
“I’ve had kind of a rocky year on tour and it’d be nice to have a good result to finish,” Ho said. “It’d be really good to get a result at home. I’m not putting a lot of pressure on myself, but I am hoping to do well.”
The O’Neill Women’s World Cup will take place at the world-famous Sunset Beach on Oahu’s North Shore from November 24 through December 6, 2010.
