Quarterfinalists Decided at Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search, Men’s Round 2 ON

Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, current ASP World No. 4, came out of this monster to claim the year’s first Perfect 10 for the girls at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico.

SOMEWHERE, Porta Del Sol/Puerto Rico (Sunday, October 31, 2010) – The Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico opened today up with Round 3 of competition in punchy two-to-three foot (1 metre) waves at the primary site of Porta Del Sol.

Stop No. 7 of 8 on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico bore witness to high drama and intense action today as the world’s best female surfers lit up the Caribbean reef break.

The 2010 ASP Women’s World Title Race is still on with current ASP Women’s World No. 1 Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, and current ASP Women’s World No. 2 Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 19, advancing through to the Quarterfinals.

Gilmore posted a solid victory over dangerous wildcard Pauline Ado (FRA), 19, pushing her one step closer to an unprecedented fourth, consecutive ASP Women’s World Title.

“Pauline (Ado) is a really good surfer and I wasn’t taking her lightly,” Gilmore said. “She was surfing really well yesterday and got off to a strong start out there today. I posted some alright scores early but didn’t feel confident until I nailed that 8-something about halfway through the heat.”

Gilmore will take on veteran power surfer Melanie Bartels (HAW), 28, when competition resumes.

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 19, current ASP Women’s World No. 2, is now the sole remaining contender for the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title, and handily won her Round 3 bout against rookie Nikita Robb (ZAF), 21.

Gilmore’s Round 3 win knocks rookie Carissa Moore (HAW), 18, out of ASP Women’s World Title contention, but the young Hawaiian remained positive following a close Round 3 victory over Day 1 standout Claire Bevilacqua (AUS), 27.

“I’m just focusing on the events right now,” Moore said. “Steph (Gilmore) and Sally (Fitzgibbons) are incredible surfers and I’m just happy to be having a good year. I missed Peru to attend my graduation (High School) and I don’t regret it at all. I just want to finish the year strong now that I’m 100% focused on the tour. It’s beautiful in Puerto Rico and I’m really thankful to Rip Curl for having the girls here.”

Moore will take on Silvana Lima (BRA), 26, in the Quarterfinals of the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico.

For Gilmore to clinch her fourth ASP Women’s World Title at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico, the following scenarios must occur:

- If Gilmore finishes Equal 3rd or better, she clinches the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title.

- If Gilmore finishes Equal 5th, Fitzgibbons needs to win the event to send the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title Race to Hawaii.

- Essentially, if Fitzgibbons fails to finish higher than Equal 3rd in the event, Gilmore will clinch the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title. Concurrently, if Gilmore advances through the Quarterfinals (one more heat), she will clinch the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title.

Lima, current ASP Women’s World No. 4, may not be in threatening the top spot this season, but she punctuated today’s affair with the first Perfect 10 of the season for a phenomenal forehand barrel.

“That was incredible for me,” Lima said. “I pulled in and I just kept going. I was saying to myself, ‘please stay open, open, open.’ Then I came out and was paddling back out and heard the score. I was so happy to be rewarded for perfect style and I was really happy. Then we got hit with a rain storm and I was worried that they were going to call the heat.”

When Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico competition resumes, up first will be Lee Ann Curren (FRA), 21, up against Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 27.

Following the completion of the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico Round 3, Round 2 of the men’s was called on and is currently running at the primary site in Porta del Sol.

Surfline, official forecaster for the Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico, are calling for the  NW/NNW becoming N swell to mix in with the lingering trade swell Monday into Tuesday of next week. Smaller, short period trade windswell is expected for Wednesday.
