A Great Day for the ASP 6-Star Supersurf Internacional at Rio de Janeiro
BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Wednesday, October 13, 2010) – For the second day in a row the sun was shining and the skies were blue for the ASP World 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional in Rio de Janeiro. The surfers were greeted with good 2-4 feet waves at Barra da Tijuca, which next year will once more hold the ASP Dream Tour in Brazil.
The day’s opening heat sow Dennis Tihara being defeated, thus becoming the second to say goodbye to the Brand new Peugeot Pickup Truck, which is prize for the best surfer in the four contests of the 2010 SuperSurf Tour. He was defeated by Neco Padaratz and Pedro Henrique.
On the next heat Paulo Moura won with Hawaiian Gavin Gillette in second, being the first international surfer to qualify for the round of 48 surfers in this contest. 20 heats of the round of 96 surfers were run today; the last four heats of this round will open the contest tomorrow (Thursday).
Running after his second South American title is Raoni Monteiro, and he started looking good establishing one of the day’s highlights with a total heat score of 15.53 points.
“I had a lucky start to getting two very good waves early in the heat, and I got two high scores (high scores) – a 7.5 and a 8.03 – I’m very happy that my positioning worked, this lefthander right in front of the judge’s tower is very good”, said Raoni, who’s in the race for the South American title, and a prize money worth $ 5,000 offered by ASP South America. He won the 2008 ASP South American Title and looks ready to defend his title.
“Yeah, I’m focused on that”, said Raoni, who will face Leonardo Neves, Gabriel Pastori and Alex Ribeiro on the round of 48 surfers tomorrow at the SuperSurf Internacional. “Leandro (Bastos) is in my heels, he won the last contest in Arpoador and is now only 500 some points behind me. William (Cardoso) is also dangerous and is in third, but I will not give it up soft, I want the South American title and will do everything to achieve”.
Willian Cardoso started strong scoring 8.5 on a single wave with a total heat score of 14.30 points. “I got a left and I surfed it the way I like with two strong backhand turns”, described Willian Cardoso about his high scored wave.
Later on, Willian’s highlights were surpassed by the 15.53 points of Raoni Monteiro, with Jano Belo ending this Wednesday posting the highest score for a single wave in the first two days of competition at Rio de Janeiro, an 8.77pts.
Current SuperSurf ranking leader Caetano Vargas also qualified for the round of 48 surfers placing second in the heat won by Ulisses Meira.
While Brazilians are focused in the battle for the two titles to be decided on the SuperSurf Internacional, the international surfers are in Brazil after the 3000 ASP World Ranking points at stake in the 6-STAR. Only four advanced to the round of 48 surfers in Barra da Tijuca, the Basque Aritz Aranburu, the Japanese Masatoshi Ohno, Medi Veminardi from Reunion Island and Hawaiian Gavin Gillette.
“It was great to win the heat on a beautiful day like this today,” said Gavin Gillette, which went through behind Paulo Moura in the second heat of the day. “I found pretty good waves for throwing airs, but I chose to make a safe surfing, since the heat was not very difficult due to fact that one of the competing surfers didn’t show up (Eneko Acero from the Basque Country). Paulo Moura has won, he’s a great surfer, in fact all Brazilians are surfing well and I’m happy to have moved through to the next round”.
This event is an ASP South America sanctioned event level 6 of the ASP World Star.
