Top Seeds Ignite Round 1 of O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada
TOFINO, British Columbia/Canada (Monday, October 11, 2010) – Top seeds including Eric Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 22, Glen Hall (IRL), 26, and Julian Wilson (Coolum, AUS), 22, were standouts in Round 1 of the ASP 6-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada, with each competitor putting on impressive performances in the three-to-four foot (1 metre) waves at North Chesterman’s beach in clean conditions despite consistent rain throughout the day.
Surfers competing in the ASP 6-Star O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada are out to capitalize on the valuable ratings points on offer towards their ASP World Ranking in an attempt to finish atop the global series to qualify for the prestigious ASP World Tour.
Geiselman punctuated Round 1 action in the final heat of the day to secure the event’s highest heat total, 15.67 out of 20, with an impressive display of aerial surfing to snag a seesaw battle over Sebastian Zietz (Kilauea, HI), 22, who also put in a valiant show to advance in second.
“The waves are super fun,” Geiselman said. “I saw Seabass (Sebastian Zietz) catching a bunch of waves and I was just trying to stay moving. I had fun and I’m stoked I made it. There were some rampy sections out there.”
The talented Floridian is out to build momentum from his Round 1 heat in hopes to notch a noteworthy result for his 2010 campaign on the ASP World Ranking at the O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada, but knows there is still a long road ahead.
“I’m definitely looking to get a good result up here,” Geiselman said. “I haven’t really had a breakthrough result this year. Hopefully I can get one here. I’m just going to try and get through my heats and surf smart.”
Hall, who was in lethal form in O’Neill Cold Water Classic Canada last year while finishing equal 5th, quickly found his feet in his opening heat to clinch the highest single-wave score of the event, an 8.67 out of 10, and was elated to return to the chilly Canadian waters after last year’s performance.
“I feel like I’m back in the same spot as last year,” Hall said. “We’re at the same spot and I’m riding the same board even. I’m glad to be back. If you do well in an event, you’re always looking forward to getting back, no matter where it is. I really enjoy being here, so it’s even better, it’s a bonus.”
Wilson was another top seed to snag a Round 1 win this afternoon and charged to a heat victory after adapting to the new feeling of a thicker wetsuit brought on by the pacific northwest’s colder temps.
“It was tricky out there in my heat,” Wilson said. “There were these shifty little peaks and it’s hard to get going in all of this rubber. That was my first heat gloves and everything, it was trippy, but I just tried to stay busy and increase my chances of getting through.”
Wilson, current No. 79 on the ASP World Ranking, is out to use the ASP 6-Star event to build momentum in the last half of the year in an attempt to qualify for the 2011 ASP Dream Tour.
“This is a good little warm up before heading to Santa Cruz,” Wilson said. “It is similar weather and Santa Cruz (O’Neill Cold Water Classic California) is one event I’m looking to do really well in. It’s good to get warmed up and used to the climate. There are a few PRIME events in the rest of the year and I’m looking to get a few more results.”
