Maresia Girls International Decides Title on Thursday in Brazil
Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil (Wednesday, September 22, 2010) – A big thunderstorm this morning in the Santa Catarina Island almost forced the Maresia Girls International organizers to call the contest off for the day. Later on the heavy rain and wind calmed down, allowing for the Heat 1 of Round 2 to enter the water. With fairly good 2-3 foot waves that built up throughout the day, six heats of the Round of 24 plus the four of Round 12 went on.
After qualifying for the Quarterfinals, the surf star from Santa Catarina, Jacqueline Silva, is already appearing on the list of six surfers who qualify for the ASP Women’s World Tour. Also Pauline Ado entered in the provisional list for the next year.
Both will have to work hard tomorrow on the decisive day at the contest held in Florianopolis. Pauline Ado will face the Australian Laura Enever and Jacqueline Silva is on the last heat to meet Diana Cristina who posted the third best combined score, 13.84 out of 20, in today’s competition in Round 3. On the second heat of the Quarterfinals, Silvana Lima feces USA’s Sage Erickson and in the third heat the Hawaiian Coco Ho and Peruvian Anali Gomez will have a rematch of last week’s Final at Bahia.
“This last heat was very tough”, said Jacqueline Silva, after getting a second place over Bruna Schmitz in a heat won by Coco Ho. ”I was kind of lost the whole heat. I only got low scores, with not many waves coming through, but even so I was able to advance in second place. I think it was a lucky day for me and everything went right.”
In her first appearance this Wednesday, Jacqueline Silva eliminated two direct contenders for the ASP World Tour, one was Hawaiian Bethany Hamilton and the other was the Australian Claire Bevilacqua, who’s now sharing the ranking’s 5th place position with Jacqueline.
Tomorrow, French surfer Pauline Ado faces Australia’s Laura Enever in Quarterfinal Heat 1. Pauline will have to work hard to stay on the access list for the next year’s World Tour. She is being threatened by American Sage Erickson who’s going to face Brazilian Silvana Lima. Hawaiian Alana Blanchard, another contender to make the women’s six surfer list, was defeated by Silvana Lima and Pauline Ado in the Round 12.
“I’m very happy,” Ado said. “The two heats I was in today were very tough, but I was able to find good waves to go through. I didn’t know that I was into the list of six, it was good to know tough, but tomorrow I want to keep it cool and just focus on winning the heats. My main goal is to move upwards in the rankings going to Hawaii not depending on the results there.”
Australian Laura Enever, who already won the ASP World Junior Title this year, has practically guaranteed herself a position on the list to the next year’s ASP Women’s Dream Tour surfers, having made it to the Quarterfinals. She can even become the ranking’s leader by winning the contest in Brazil.
“Yeah, I prefer not to think about it, all I want is to keep winning the heats,” Enever said. “I surfed well today and I want to still surf well tomorrow. My only focus is getting good waves in the heats.”
