Hurricane Swell Expected for ASP Grade-1 Fins Pro Junior
BELMAR, New Jersey/USA (Wednesday, September 15, 2010) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Grade-1 Fins Pro Junior is set to hit Belmar, New Jersey for the second stop on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series and is expecting a solid hurricane swell to deliver good conditions for the weekend event.
The ASP Grade-1 Fins Pro Junior allows up-and-coming competitors the chance to earn crucial ratings points towards establishing their rating on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series. Top finishers on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series qualify for the prestigious ASP World Junior Tour.
Michael Dunphy (Virginia Beach, VA), 20, just wrapped up and impressive Equal 3rd place finish at the ASP Grade-4 Nike 6.0 Unsound Junior Pro last week and will be the top seed entering the upcoming Fins Pro Junior. The talented East Coaster is hoping to carry his momentum from last week’s performance in an attempt to take out his first ASP Pro Junior victory in his last eligible year in the series.
“I’d love to win one of these things before I’m done,” Dunphy said. “I just had a good result in New York and I really hope to do well again in New Jersey.”
With Hurricane Igor expected to deliver good surf throughout the event’s entirety, Dunphy is also looking to enjoy the opportunity to compete in the East Coast’s iconic hurricane swell conditions.
“The forecast is looking really good,” Dunphy said. “Hopefully we get offshore winds and it’ll be nice to have good waves for a contest.”
Balaram Stack (Long Beach, NY), 18, who is fresh off of his career best result, an equal 5th place finish at his home break of Long Beach during the ASP Grade-4 Nike 6.0 Unsound Junior Pro, is also hoping to carry his new found confidence from the event to the Fins Pro Junior this weekend.
“I’m pretty happy that everyone got to see what my town is all about and get some waves,” Stack said. “My result at home was the best result I’ve had so it just makes me realize I can do a lot better than I have in the past.”
Stack is also happy to have the opportunity to capitalize on the crucial ASP North America Pro Junior Series Ratings points on offer while competing close to home.
“Having these East Coast events helps a ton because most of the contests are in California,” Stack said. “Competing on the East Coast saves a good amount of money in travel and the waves are really fun at the two event locations.”
The ASP Grade-1 Fins Pro Junior will see the 64 man field compete from September 17 through 19, 2010.
