Will the 'Flying Wilko' do some damage at the Hurley Pro Trestles?

SYDNEY, New South Wales/Australia (Friday, September 10, 2010) -The ASP’s midyear field reduction is done and dusted and those who remain have a whole new battle on their hands – the battle for requalification. Rookie sensation Matt Wilkinson (AUS), 21, currently sits at ASP World No. 24 and will need to do some damage throughout the remainder of the season if he’s to see himself amongst the world’s elite come 2011. However, if his high-wire act from Tahiti transfers to Lowers next week, we could see some monster performances from the Central Coast kid. Stab: How was the vibe in Tahiti?

Wilko: Everyone beforehand was fairly confident because everyone that’s made the tour obviously believes they are good enough to make heats and make it to wherever they need to go, but as it came down to round two, three and four where there were two guys in a heat and one was gonna get knocked off tour it was pretty heavy. There was a lot of emotion out in the water. I knew I needed to make one heat to stay in and I had Kekoa in round two. We’re good mates, we’ve done a few trips together with Rip Curl. I went out there and tried to put pressure on him at the start and I ended up getting a high eight and a high six. He needed a score and at the end I was stoked to be going through and he was so spewing. It was kinda hard (to talk to him after). I said sorry to him and he said, ‘Yeah you do what you gotta do.’ He’ll be back on tour in six months though
