April 2010, Thurso, Schottland: Der Winter mag in der nördlichen Hemisphäre offiziell zu Ende sein, doch die O´Neill Cold Water Classic Series wird mit ihren 144 teilnehmenden Surfern bis zur nördlichsten Stadt des britischen Festlandes ziehen und so Frühlingsgefühlen definitiv keine Chance lassen.

Durch einen der kältesten Winter in Europa und immer noch existierende Schneestürme im Nordosten Schottlands wird dieser O´Neill Cold Water Schottland Event als einer der brutalsten in die Geschichte eingehen.

„Es ist immer noch sau kalt hier,“ sagt die lokale Legende Andy Bain. „Der Fluss war gefroren,“ erzählt er weiter. „Es gab einige Tage, an denen es nicht möglich war Thurso East zu surfen, da große Eisbrocken vom Fluss in den Line-up gespült worden sind.“

Der 6-Star ASP Event in Thurso schließt an einem epischen Start der Serie in der Wildnis Tasmaniens, Australien an. Dort hatte das junge, australische Talent Stuart Kennedy in perfekten 8 ft Bedingungen den südlichsten Event im professionellen Surfen gewonnen.

Die Cold Water Classic Series ziehen nun auf die andere Seite der Erde und wandeln sich zum nördlichsten Event im professionellen Surfen. Es werden kraftvolle, weltklasse Wellen erwartet, die den Vergleich mit der North Shore Hawaiis nicht scheuen müssen.

Und das sind einige der herausfordernsten Bedingungen, die einem Surfer begegnen können. Luft- und Wassertemperaturen sind ungemütlich niedrig, gepaart mit Dauerregen und Hagelstürmen; das ultimative Cold Water Classic Erlebnis. Trotzdem kommen die Surfer jedes Jahr wieder und trotzen den mörderischen Bedingungen.

Unter den Teilnehmern ist auch Jarrad Howse, der hier das erste Mal 2007 an den Start ging. „Diese ganz besondere Atmosphäre Thursos raubt mir jedes Mal den Atem,“ so Jarrad. „Von der traumhaften Anreise durch die verschneiten Highlands, zu den perfekten hohlen Wellen der Nordküste ist Schottland mein Lieblingsstopp auf der Tour und das sehe nicht nur ich so.“

Durch das mobile Contestformat hat der Event die Möglichkeit, die besten Bedingungen entlang der Küste zu nutzen.

Von den steilen, schnellen Wellen von Brims Ness zu der Perfektion von Thurso East können die Bedingungen die besten der ganzen Tour werden.

„In Thurso kann man vier Jahreszeiten innerhalb einer Woche erleben – eine wirkliche Herausforderung,“ so Jarrad. „Aber in sechs bis acht Fuß Thurso East wird sich sicher niemand beschweren. Jeder will das Highland-Schwert als Trophäe mit nach Hause nehmen.“

Da Tradition bei diesem Event groß geschrieben wird, wird das historische Schwert durch den Botschafter des Events Andy Bain dem Gewinner in einer Zeremonie am Strand überreicht.

Aber nicht nur um das Schwert wird gesurft, es winkt der Titel der O´Neill Cold Water Classic Series und $50,000 Preisgeld.

Durch ein Staraufgebot an Surfern wie Nat Young, Cory Lopez, Shaun Cansdell und Timmy Reyes wird es allerdings kein leichtes Unterfangen sein hier abzuräumen.

Nach diesem Event in Schottland wird die Cold Water Classic Series zum wildesten Event im professionellen Surfen mutieren und im Juli in Kapstadt, Südafrika ausgetragen. Danach folgen der kälteste Event in Tofino, Kanada und der klassischste Event in Santa Cruz, Kalifornien, dem Geburtsort von O´Neill.

Billy Stairmand Leads Opening Day of O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland

Brims Ness/Thurso – Scotland (Tuesday, April 13, 2010) – The first 8 heats of round one of the O'Neill Cold Water Classic (CWC) Scotland an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star event were completed today at the back-up location of Brims Ness where young New Zealand surfer Billy Stairmand lead the opening round charge of a strong international field.


Competition began at 7:30 am on a crisp, clear Scottish morning with waves in the 3-4ft (1-1.2m) range as the high tide provided excellent conditions with a light breeze and water temperature at a mere 7 º Celsius.


Billy Stairmand (NZL) stormed through to the following round with a solid performance scoring the highest two wave total of 14.66 out of 20. The youngster from New Zealand had never surfed Brims Ness before until todays heat and found himself comfortable in the challenging conditions.


“This is the first time I have been to Scotland and the first time I have actually surfed this wave so I’m happy because I got a couple of waves and the scores I needed. We have been surfing down the coast a little at a beach break going right so I was really excited to get out there.”


Stairmand has had little or no preparation for the event here in Scotland however feels at home surfing in extremely cold water and demonstrated his cool, relaxed approach when wearing the competition vest.


“I went into the water really relaxed. I felt like I was free surfing out there with a couple other guys. I didn’t have a plan just wanted to get a couple of scores at the beginning and then build on my scores and that is what I did so I’m happy.”


Nicolaus Rupp (DEU) based in Ericeira Portugal also advanced today to the second round but unlike Stairmand has been preparing himself for almost two weeks for the type of conditions that can be expected in the CWC Scotland. Rupp came out of the water a very pleased surfer with his pass through to round two.


“I felt really comfortable out there because I have conditions like this where I live, it’s a little reef break. So the last ten days I have been training hard on the rights and getting barrelled. So I feel comfortable and my boards are going amazing. I am loving Scotland, it’s a great place.”


Anthony Walsh (AUS) was heat one winner in what was in the end a comfortable victory through to the next round. Walsh enjoyed the 25-minute clash and lead from start to finish.


“It’s really fun actually. There’s a little rip bank and when the right one comes through it’s quite hittable but just a lot of wetsuit for me to get used to but if you get the right one it’s really fun.”


“It says 3 degrees,” continued Walsh about the weather temperature. “At least there’s no wind and the sun is out. It’s not actually too bad as long as you have all the right gear on, so it’s pretty warm really.”


With a promising forecast swell wise Walsh is optimistic about the increase in size but hesitant about the worsening weather conditions.


“I prefer the bigger waves but this is good fun. It if stays this size it will be good but there is a swell coming and as well the wind and the rain so just have to see what happens.”


The O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland will continue tomorrow with the completion of round one and a possible start to the second round with the event’s top seeded surfers getting an opportunity to test themselves in the trying conditions.


Up first tomorrow in heat 9 will be Jeronimo Vargas (BRA), Frederic Robin (REU), Freddie Meadows (SWE) and current Scottish National Championship finalist Mark Boyd.

Round One Completed at O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland

BRIMS NESS, Scotland (Wednesday, April 14, 2010) – The O'Neill Cold Water Classic (CWC) Scotland an Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star men’s event ran through the final 8 heats of round one and set the scene for the start of round 2 with the remaining 96 seeded surfers.


With a light northerly breeze coming off the artic circle conditions were extremely cold both in and out of the water with low cloud cover throughout the day. Consistent 3-4ft (1-1.2m) waves were hitting the reef at Brims Ness offering a clean right-hand peak for the competitors to work off.


Russell Malony (AUS) impressed with a powerful display of front-side surfing on the right-hand break locking in a solid 4.67 and then shortly afterwards scoring an 8.00 out of a possible 10 to score the highest individual score of the event. The similarity of Brims Ness to his home break helped in his heat planning.


“I felt good out there because it is like a reef I have at home. I felt comfortable but it is a bit cold. I’m from North Entrance (NSW) and there are a couple of reef breaks, bit of a secret where they are but they are really similar.”


“With all this rubber on it seems to warm you up so no worries there,” continued Maloney.  “I was out there hoping that a good one would come through which it did so it’s good to get the first one out of the way and I’m looking forward to the next round.”


Sam Lamiroy (GBR) had a very slow start to his encounter and with only 5–minutes remaining still had no real scores on the board. He finally opened his account locking in a 7.5 out of a possible 10 and then had to wait until the final seconds to find his backup score and advance through to the next round.


The flamboyant Brit was pleased with the end result and looks forward to having another go at the top seeds in the event tomorrow. Never short of a word, Lamiroy had this to say about his performance.


“I basically didn’t get a wave for 20-minutes which isn’t the best tactic in a 25-minute heat. I got lucky then because I got a decent wave, surfed it ok, got a 7.5 and then I had a minute and a half to get a 2.5 score.”


“There was a moment when I thought this isn’t going to come,” laughed Lamiroy. “But with about a minute to go I got this wave and did a big claim. It was more of an emotional thing than anything else, I knew it was worth a 2.5 and the judges knew it was worth that so I got through. “


“It was one of those heats you come out really stoked because you make it so difficult for yourself that it is so nice to get a win in the first round and maybe surf big proper Thurso East and maybe cut loose a bit more.”


Brazilian Jeronimo Vargas 20, looked at ease in the tough conditions. On his first visit to the CWC Scotland the young Brazilian has quickly adapted to the cold water. Stylish fore-hand gouges in the critical section of the wave secured various high scoring rides and a comfortable entry to the next round.


“There are some good waves out there and when the set came there were always 3 or 4 waves so it was really rippable and I am starting to get used to it here. I arrived a couple of days ago and so I have had a chance to get used to the wetsuit and the boots.”


“ I think it was a good way to start the event,” stated Vargas. “It is my first time in Scotland and I am really enjoying it. It’s a beautiful place with very good waves but it’s cold, really cold.” (laughs)


Jay Quinn (NZL) surfed strongly to score a two wave total of 14.10 out of 20 the highest two wave total of the day. Having suffered a number of serious knee injuries last year Quinn is feeling confident and hungry for a good result in the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland.


“It was really nice and relaxed out there because unfortunately Cory (Arrambide) missed the heat so we were only 3 out there which was good.”


“I was just trying to keep moving and keep warm because I went out there in a 3/2 wetsuit so I just tried to get a lot of waves and in the end I got a couple of good ones so quite happy to start like that.”


“I’ve been out of the water for a long time last year so this is my third event back so I am definitely looking for a result.”


Being completely mobile the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland will make a call at 7 am (local time) to decide where round 2 of the ASP men’s 6-Star event will commence.


When competition resumes top seed Blake Thorton (AUS) will be up against T.J Barron (HAW) and fellow Australians Jarrod Sullivan and Anthony Walsh.

Top Seeds in Action at O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland

THURSO EAST, Scotland (Friday, April 16, 2010) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star men’s O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland commenced round two of competition with the event’s top seeded surfers  until due to lack of waves  it was eventually put on hold after the completion of heat nº 13. Following an afternoon assessment of conditions event officials decided to wait until tomorrow to resume competition.

 

A bitterly cold, grey day greeted competitors early at the main event site of Thurso East. As the day progressed the swell increased to the 4-5ft (1.2-1.5m) range but unfortunately dropped off with the lowering tide as the on-shore winds strengthened making for yet another rugged day of endurance at the most northern, coldest event on the planet.

 

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland offers surfers a chance to gain valuable ASP World Men’ Star points as well as points in the overall O’Neill CWC Series and for European competitors Scotland marks stop nº 1 of 12 of the ASP European Series which will eventually crown this year’s European champion.


Nathaniel Curran (USA) sitting nº 85 on the ASP Men’s Star ratings was today in stunning form with a controlled demonstration of competitive surfing. Well drilled and planned to perfection his performance surprised despite not having tested today’s conditions.

 

“I didn’t get a free surf this morning because I didn’t want to get too cold. The first couple of waves I just wanted to get into a rhythm and catch a lot of waves.”

 

Starting off his 30-minute clash with two solid rides in the 6.5 range Curran then sat and chose only the quality waves coming in. Attempting airs and using the heat time to get accustomed to the freezing water temperatures  eventually nailing a 7.33 to obtain the day’s highest two wave heat total of 14.16 out of a possible 20.

 

 “It is kind of tricky some are breaking out the back and the some waves beak out wide and you can get a score on the good ones but sometimes a bit hard to figure out what to do but it’s fun just a bit chilly though.”

 

“I’ve been here once a two years ago and made a couple of heats so really stoked to get a result here. I don’t mind the rubber so I’m stoked:”

 

Current ASP European champion Joan Duru (FRA) got off to an excellent start to his 2010 European campaign. Looking confident and surfing with power and control laying down some trademark high-speed back-hand turns, the 21- year-old from Ondres has sent out a clear message that in this 5th edition of the O’Neill CWC Scotland Duru wants to go higher than his 3rd place result last year.

 

“I really like this wave and it is like 4ft and it has power so I love it. I came third and there were good waves but today it was a bit bad so hopefully tomorrow will be better.”

 

Cory Lopez (USA) made his first appearance in Scottish waters with a polished display in deteriorating conditions. Sitting in 37th place at the moment on the ASP Men’s Star ratings Lopez used a different approach to his first heat of the CWC Scotland.

 

 “I saw everyone paddling out up the point but I wanted to stay away from them and do my own thing. I was getting a view of the wave from down there too because you can paddle out and see what the guys are doing and there were a couple of wide bowls and I lucked into a couple of those so happy to get through the heat.”

Lopez found it tough out in the water having had little time to adjust to the hash climatic conditions and was pleased with his overall first up performance.

 

“That was my first surf in Scotland so I didn’t have too much warm up time. The waves are real challenging at the moment. There are a few waves to be had but the chops pretty rough and it’s the coldest water I’ve ever surfed in and it was an experience and I am glad to get through the heat and looking forward to some bigger waves later in the week.”

 

Marc Lacomare (FRA) 19, advanced along with Jeronimo Vargas (BRA) overcoming the Australian pair of Yadin Nicol and Jarrod Howse. Definitely a tough match-up Lacomare went from strength to strength as the heat progressed for what was a comfortable win.

 

“I haven’t done a contest in a long time so I am happy to get into the following round. I am going step by step to do the best in the next heat.”


Current ASP Europe Junior Champion, Lacomare knows that at this level of competition meeting more experienced opponents is all part of the learning curve.

 

“I want to go as far as I can in the contest and for sure there are going to be some hard heats and I know this one was very hard to start with but I didn’t think about it just catch my waves and see how it goes”

O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland Steps Into Top Gear

THURSO EAST, Scotland (Saturday, April 17, 2010) – The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star men’s O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland stepped into top gear and showed it’s true colours with courageous displays of surfing mixed with extremely wild weather conditions. Many saying the heaviest they have experienced in a surfing competition. The final 24 surfers were decided with the completion of round 3 late this afternoon under heavy rain, wind and a mere 4º Celsius

 

Strong cold winds which at times reached gale force strength along with rain lead to another tough day for the remaining surfers. Definitely bigger than yesterday with waves from 4-6ft (1-1.5m) and consistent sets which was one of the bonuses helping to keep the event on a roll.   

 

Royden Bryson (ZAF) summed it up perfectly, “Definitely without a shadow of a doubt the coldest day I have ever spent at the beach in my entire life. The waves are actually pretty good so we can’t complain I mean it’s 5-6ft and it could be flat which is worse. The elements here are something radical.”

The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland the most northern surfing event on the planet is the second stop of The O’Neill CWC Series and offers surfers  valuable ASP World Men’ Star points and is also stop nº 1 of 12 of the ASP European Series which will eventually crown this year’s European champion.

 

The performance of the day goes to Jay Quinn (NZ) who literally smashed and flew his way to the highest combined two wave total of the event 18.34 out of a possible 20. Belting the lip with a savage forehand attack saw him earn an excellent 8.67 score and then the young kiwi unlashed with one forehand smack followed by a huge air boost to claim a 9.67 out of a possible 10.

 

The quietly spoken younger brother of Maz Quinn former ASP WCT surfer was unable to explain how it all just fell into place for him today.

 

“I managed to get a couple of waves and I don’t know how but the scores just came through for me.”

 

“I think the wind helped out a bit on that one, it stuck the board to my feet, (laughs),” continued Quinn about how he pulled off his incredible boosting air. “Any other day I probably wouldn’t have made it and for once it was good to get a good heat in because the last one I managed to scrape through in the last ten seconds.”

 

Fresh from his win in the O’Neill CWC Tasmania Stuart Kennedy (AUS) had to fight all the way to the wire to keep his hopes alive and make it back to back O’Neill CWC victories

 

“It was difficult out there because I didn’t get the good ones so I had to work hard on the smaller ones that I got so stoked to get through. My second best result in a 6-star.”

On his chances of adding the O’Neill CWC Scotland trophy to his collection Kennedy was putting everything into perspective.

 

“It would be good to get two wins but you can’t win them all so that’s the other thing I have to look at.”

 

ASP rookie Shaun Joubert (ZAF) on his first year competing on the ASP men’s star tour and on his first visit to Scotland exploded out of the blocks in heat nº2 of round 4 pulling off a huge front-side air to score an 8.5 then backed it up with another high scoring 7.67 to secure the heat win and a two wave total of 16.17 out of a possible 20.

 

“It was pretty fun out there really. I live at a right-hand point break so anything that resembles that is good for my surfing and despite the cold it’s good.”

 

“It was one of those heats where everything goes right and I’m happy to have a good heat out there. I made 2 heats in Tasmania (CWC),” continued Joubert about his O’Neill CWC results so far this year. “It’s good to do that again because lots of guys don’t like surfing in wetsuits so they don’t come here but I like it a lot”

 

Hodei Collazo (EUK) scraped through on his final wave of the 25-minute clash. Struggling with the wind, rain and spray Collazo knew that to advance he needed something big that would impress the international judging panel.

“I was all the heat and I couldn’t get a good one only waves with one turn and I needed something like a 6.8. So I just waited for the bigger waves to try and get it and with the rain it was really hard. Then that wave came and I was a bit nervous but I did two big moves and I was lucky I didn’t fall so I’m really happy.”

 

“I came here the first time with my dad and this is the best I have done,” continued Collazo about his experiences in Scotland and this year’s results. “I got a good result in Brazil I came 9th and then I haven’t really done anything so maybe here could be my next best result.”

 

Earlier today in round 2 O’Neill team rider Nat Young (USA) 18, first timer to Scotland scored one of the highest scoring waves of the day 8.5 to advance into the next round only to be eliminated by Jay Quinn (NZL) and Yuri Sodre (BRA).

 

The young American turned heads with smooth powerful surfing in very difficult conditions and despite being eliminated will be back to have another attempt next year.

 

Tomorrow’s forecast is for the swell to remain the same and unbelievably the possibility of snow.  The O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland is without doubt the hardest contest on the planet and it will continue tomorrow with the first call at 6:30am (local Time).

Semi-Finalists Decided at O’Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland

THURSO EAST, Scotland (Sunday, April 18, 2010) – Day 6 of The Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 6-Star men’s O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland decided the semi-finalists on a day that saw some incredible surfing as well as a full array of weather conditions from clear blue skies and sunshine to snow storms battering the main event site at Thurso East.

 

Competition began with excellent 6ft (1.5m) waves as the tide began to push in and cover the exposed slate rock reef.  By the time the quarter-finalists hit the water the resilient crowd who had braved the elements to stay and watch the action were treated to bright sunshine and some incredible surfing right through to the end of the quarter finals.

 

A singularly magic moment occurred around midday when it actually started to snow over the competition area. Glen Hall (IRL) who later lost a close quarter-final heat against O’Neill team rider Shaun Cansdell (AUS) could not believe his eyes as the snow fell over Thurso East and says it will always remain as a fond memory.

 

“That was the most special heat of my life for sure. I’ll tell everyone at the pub when I’m old that it was proper full on snowing in my heat. It was cool, it was really cool but it was cold (laughs).”

 

Royden Bryson (ZAF) was first to advance into the semis with a win over the event’s in form surfer Nathaniel Curran (USA) 25. Bryson knows what it is like to be at this stage of the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland and has firmed as favourite to take out the title.

“You always aspire to do well but when you are dealing with the ocean you never know what it will throw at you so I’m happy to be just 4 more waves away from a victory. It sounds a lot easier than it actually is but it is one step closer.”

 

Bryson got off to a strong start but then almost let the cat out of the bag by not fully utilizing his priority situations during the heat.

 

“I started with 7.5 and then my backup was a 6.17 and I had about 17 minutes to sit and pick a wave which was a little bad on my behalf because I should have been a little more selective.”

 

“At the end of the heat when Nathaniel had priority,” continued Bryson. “He didn’t really get a good wave so that’s the way it comes sometimes the roll of the dice.”

 

Yuri Sodre (BRA) had a tough encounter against current European junior champion Marc Lacomare (FRA). In the first exchange of the heat both surfers started strongly and it was the young Frenchman who took the upper hand. Lacomare then nailed a 6.5 out of a possible 10 to leave Sodri with a lot of work ahead of him if he wanted to get back in the heat.

 

Sodre called on all his years of experience to come back with a combination of powerful turns to score a 9.57 the highest single wave score of the day and a combined total of 17.77 to Lacomare’s 15.17 total.

 

“I started with a 7.5 and it was a good start but then Marc (Lacomare) started with an 8.67 and I thought oh no! I had to be smart and patient and just think about each turn one at a time. I wanted to do a good turn, wait, get some speed another turn and I was trying to draw a line of the wave in my mind”

 

“I was under a bit of pressure because Marc was in front and I needed a huge score. When it is man on man and there are good waves you have to be patient and feel good. This is my best result of the year and I am really excited to win and do better. I hope my body and my mind can get in rhythm with the ocean tomorrow”

 

Fellow Brazilian Raoni Monteiro will join Sodre in semi-final nº 2 as he had a last minute win over O’Neill CWC Tasmania champion Stuart Kennedy (AUS). Monteiro was back to his best and despite momentarily losing the lead when Kennedy snuck under his priority the former ASP “Dream Tour” surfer waited until the final 30 seconds to regain the lead with a solid 5.5 ride.

“That was such a hard battle because Stuart (Kennedy) was such a great competitor. I had the priority on the last wave he got and I should have gone on that one.”

 

“My next wave was ok and I had the priority so I picked that wave because I needed that score and I am happy to get through”

 

“Two Brazilians,” continued Monteiro about his upcoming clash against Yuri Sodre. “So one of us is going to make the final so I hope it is me (laughs). But I have to do the same as I did today to get to the final and I know it is going to be tough.”

 

The final day of the O'Neill Cold Water Classic Scotland will unfold with the first call at 7:00 am (local Time).
