ASP 4-Star Surf Open Acapulco Begins Tomorrow

Quiksilver-Day-2

PLAYA REVOLCADERO, Acapulco/Mexico (Monday, July 1, 2013) – The second annual Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Surf Open Acapulco presented by Vans is set to commence tomorrow, with ample swell expected to deliver throughout the entirety of the waiting period.

Stop No. 3 of 5 on the men’s ASP North America calendar, the Surf Open Acapulco offers the perfect platform for up-and-coming talent to assert themselves on a global scale.

Carlos Munoz (CRI), 20, a finalist at last year’s Surf Open Acapulco and a top seed in 2013, has been building a name for himself on the international stage. Munoz success in 2013 has ranged from a perfect 10 at Pipeline to a head-turning high-performance effort in Cabo last week and the Costa Rican hopes another top result at the Surf Open Acapulco will push him in to the next tier of competition.

“For me, this event is really important because we haven’t had too many contests to start the year and I’m coming off of a 5th place last week in Cabo,” Munoz said. “It has really motivated me to try and make a push to the top and a good result here could give me the points I need to get in to bigger events.”

Munoz, who has proven to be a threat in all conditions, displayed impressive poise in adapting to Playa Revolcadero’s consistently changing conditions last year, but knows backing up his podium finish will be no easy task.

“Playa Revolcadero really changes a lot with the tide,” Munoz said. “In the morning, you can try and start quick with a couple of tubes, but in the afternoon it has really good air sections. Either way, the conditions are the same for everyone and you just have to do your best.”

Tim Reyes (Huntington Beach, CA), 31, former ASP WCT competitor, has stepped away from full-time competition, but is a regular fixture in the developing Latin American leg due to its rich culture and incredible waves. Reyes, a standout in last year’s Surf Open Acapulco, is excited to return to Playa Revolcadero and will be a serious threat to this year’s Surf Open Acapulco title.

“I can’t wait to head back to Acapulco,” Reyes said. “Last year was such a great event. Nothing beats long days of surfing and hanging out in the pool at the hotel and then add a great event with supportive locals and everything. It makes it so much fun. Having the 4-Star back again is a great thing for Latin America and the North American tour. I’m so happy that they stepped it up again.”
