LEVANTO, Italy (Sunday, November 13, 2011) – The ASP World Longboard Tour (WLT) Bear Pro presented by Jeep paid homage to local Marco Cioli and to the victims of the tragic flooding which recently devastated the ‘Cinque Terra’ area. Another lay day was called due to lack of swell and the riders united for the midday ‘paddle out’.
Marco Boscaglia (Rome, ITA) 22, who is competing in his first ASP WLT here at the Bear Pro presented by Jeep thanks to his wildcard slot, was one of many competitors who participated in the activities organised be event officials. A morning boat trip took competitors, officials and media to the nearby town of Vernazza to witness the damage and to create awareness of the effort that is being made to rebuild the town.
“The paddle out was for Marco Cioli a local from here and the victims of the recent floods in the area. We went into the water together to remember these people. In Vernazza I went into the city and it was really bad. The water came to the first floor of the buildings and there were many landslides. It was terrible to see but they are fixing the town and there are a lot of people working to bring back the city.”
Boscaglia is here in Levanto to take full advantage of his wildcard and to represent Italy at this ASP World Longboard Tour event. When competition commences, all eyes will be on the stylish goofy footer as he takes on the world’s best longboarders.
“I got a wildcard from my sponsor, Bear Surfboards who are sponsoring this fantastic event. I am so happy this opportunity and it is the biggest event I have made. I have come here a couple of times to Levanto and I have surfed really good waves here but I am not a local. I know the wave as well as the other pros who are here.”
“I usually surf a beach break near my home only three minutes on foot,” continued Boscaglia. “I also go to ‘Banzai’ which is one of the best Italian surf spots. It is a good right hand point break and also there are spots with long lefts too. There is a good community of longboarders here in Italy especially in Tuscany near Levanto and in Rome as well.”
ASP International head judge Tim Marshall has been assessing conditions early each morning to assist in the decision making of when to get the Bear Pro presented by Jeep underway. Marshall gives us the latest forecast regarding when a start to Round One of competition might be possible.
“Today we are on another lay day as the swell is still not here. Hopefully we are looking at a new swell later next week and a storm will produce some waves here in Italy and we can get underway then.”
“The waves are really good here,” added Marshall. “I was a little bit surprised by the power of the wave over here in Levanto. It is a really good beach break with a strong barrelling wave so hopefully we can get some more waves like we had the other day and show the world that the longboarders can ride barrels and do the traditional surfing that everyone wants to see.”
