Rip Curl Pro Portugal ON at Supertubos
Kelly Slater (USA), 39, reigning 10-time ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 1, will begin his campaign for a second, consecutive Rip Curl Pro Portugal title today against Travis Logie (ZAF), 32, and Bruno Santos (BRA), 28, in Round 1 of competition.
SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Sunday, October 16, 2011) – The Rip Curl Pro Portugal, Event No. 9 of 11 on the 2011 ASP World Title season, will commence this today at 1:15pm in clean, building three-to-five foot (1 – 1.5 metre) waves at Supertubos.
“We’ve monitored conditions throughout the morning and are seeing the first consistent signs of the swell filling in,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “We’ll begin with Round 1 at 1:15pm and expect conditions to build and improve throughout the afternoon.”
Up first will be Joel Parkinson (AUS), 30, Jadson Andre (BRA), 21, and Fredrick Patacchia (HAW), 29, in the opening heat of Round 1.

Surfline, official forecasters for the Rip Curl Pro Portugal, are calling for a new, long period northwest swell will build in through the day, be strongest tomorrow and then will fade through the middle to second half of the week. At this point, wind conditions look generally favorable for Supertubos today and tomorrow. Much stronger wind will pick up for Tuesday-Thursday, but will still be from a decent direction for Supertubos.
