ASP 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional Set to Finish Off Saturday in Brazil
Halley Batista is one of 12 surfers remaining in the SuperSurf Internacional.
ITAMAMBUCA BEACH, Sao Paulo State / Brazil (Friday, October 14, 2011) - Two Americans and an Australian will be up against nine Brazilians on Saturday for the last day of competition at the 2011 ASP World 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional at Itamambuca Beach in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Under glassy waves in the 2-3 foot (.5-1.0 meter) range, Halley Batista (BRA) was once again the standout surfer on Friday. Scoring the highest heat-wave total of the day with a 16.0 (out of 20), Batista guaranteed a spot into the Round of 12.
“I’m going to try my hardest in the next heat,” said Batista. “For me, each heat now is like a Final. I want to improve my standing in the rankings so I can compete in the PRIME events next year. I want to get into the rhythm of a champion and start it off by winning it here.”
In Heat 1 of the Round of 24, Mitch Crews (AUS) had the day’s highest single-wave score of an 8.70 (out of 10) by completing a Superman on the rippable waves at Itamambuca Beach.
Even though he admits that he’s not focused on qualifying for the ASP World Tour this year, Kolohe Andino (USA) took another step closer to making it to the Dream Tour in 2012. Andino currently sits at No. 41 on the ASP World Ranking and making it into the Round of 12 guaranteed him a minimum of 920 points to add on.
“I’m still pretty young and I’m just looking to gain experience from these events,” said Andino, who still hasn’t shown his wide array of modern tricks at the SuperSurf Internacional. “The high tide started coming in during my heat and conditions got worse and it was like a battle for three points. Then, Thiago (Camarao) and I started getting some five’s, but unfortunately things were really slow.”
2008 ASP World 6-Star event winner and local surfer at Itamambuca Beach, Wiggolly Dantas (BRA) also qualified into the Round of 12, scheduled to begin at 9am local time.
“That was a really tough heat with Tanner (Gudauskas), Neco (Padaratz) and Aritz (Aranburu),” said Dantas. “They’re all surfing so well. I started getting nervous, but qualifying into the next round makes me feel more confident going into the final day of competition”.
The SuperSurf Internacional is presented by Peugeot and is produced by Abril Media and with the support of the State of Sao Paulo through the Secretary of Tourism, Nicoboco surfwear, Jovem Pan Radio and Alma do Mar art gallery.
