Nate Yeomans Stands Out at ASP PRIME Billabong Azores Islands Pro

Sao Miguel, Azores Islands (Friday, September 30, 2011) – The ASP PRIME Billabong Azores Islands ran another marathon day of competition in tricky 3ft wind affected peaks to finish late this afternoon with the running of the ‘No Losers’ round. Nate Yeomans (San Clemente, CA) 30, was the stand out performer as the remaining 12 surfers cut loose in search of the ASP PRIME Billabong Azores Islands Pro title which may be decided tomorrow Saturday, Oct 1, 2011 due to huge seas and gale force winds predicted for Sunday.

Yeomans claimed his best result of the 2011 season in the PRIME series with his advancement straight into the quarterfinals. The explosive goofy footer held a great heat against Gabe Kling (USA) in Round Three when he laid down a solid snap to then boost a huge air reverse to gain the advantage in the opening minutes with an 8.17 (out of 10), one of the highest single-wave scores of the day. Yeomans kept the ball rolling and blasted through the ‘No Losers’ Round with another win over an inform Miguel Pupo (BRA) 19 and Jay Quinn (NZL).

“It is amazing. You have nothing to lose and a lot to gain. It was awesome to win that heat and be in the business part of things. I am with a whole group, the Gudauskas brothers, Austin Ware, Dylan Graves so we kind of bounce ideas off each other and come up with a plan. It is a sick crew of guys and they pushed me to go for it and just move around in the line-up.”

“This year I don’t think I have made the quarters so just watching the scores from the last couple of events you just have to go for it,” continued Yeomans. “You may fall on some but you gain with the judges and if you do make it they reward you for it so that was my theory out there and it worked well. Gabe (Kling) can do some of the biggest turns in the business, especially on his backhand and that air I got I saw him looking at me and I stuck it and he was splashing the water so it felt good to get one up on him for sure.”

Fredrick Patacchia (Oahu, HAW) 29, looked  fast and sharp with savage gouges and rail carves in the choppy wave faces to grind out a tough win over fellow ASP World tour members Brett Simpson (USA) and Travis Logie (ZAF). Patacchia opened strong with a long left filled with a combination of turns to secure a 7.67 (out of 10) and gain the early advantage that he maintained for the heat win and his pass directly into the quarterfinals.

“In these kinds of conditions you have to roll the dice on a few weird looking ones and hope they materialise. I got off to a good start with a 7 and that felt good and my boards feel good under my feet so I feel if I can get the right waves then I can get excellent scores.”

“It definitely was not easy,” stated Patacchia. “The other two guys in my heat are all in the top 32 so they really know how to surf two-man heats, three-man heats and they are not going to get nervous. I treated it as a World tour heat basically.”

Leonardo Neves (Saquarema, BRA) 31, ranked nº69, also secured his highest points haul for the current 52-week best 8 results on the ASP World rankings with his performance today. The veteran competitor used his experience and tactical skills to find his way into the final 12 surfers in a low scoring clash against Gabriel Villaran (PER) 10.77 to 9.60 and then win his next encounter to advance to the quarterfinals.

“The swell has changed a lot and with the tide it is really hard out there. I saw the heat before mine and the guys got through in the end. I was worried and I knew the scores were not going to be very high. I think it was a good idea to go out there and catch lots of waves because I got a couple of 5’s which were not very high but it was enough to get through.”

Heitor Alves (BRA) 29, was unable to compete in the ‘No Loser’ Round due to damage suffered to his right knee in his Round of 24 clash with fellow countryman Jesse Mendes 18. Alves collected his competition vest and watched on as his heat ran on without his presence in the water. The super fit, ASP World Tour member is resting his knee overnight to hopefully return for the final day of competition in a position to compete in Heat nº1 against fellow countryman Miguel Pupo.

Alain Riou (PYF) 27, will face Jay Quinn (NZL) 26, in heat nº2 of the Round of 12 with the added pressure of the European Open title. Riou, currently nº3 on the rankings, needs to make the quarterfinals to overtake rankings leader Romain Cloitre (REU) who has been leading the rankings since his 6-Star victory in Newquay this August. Only one heat away from the title, Riou will call on all his experience to claim his maiden ASP European Open title.

A first-call will be made at 7.30am tomorrow Saturday, October 1, 2011 with event officials looking at the possibility of crowning this year’s ASP PRIME Billabong Azores Islands Pro champion.

The ASP 6-Star Billabong Girls Azores Islands Pro and the ASP PRIME Billabong Azores Islands Pro are scheduled from September 26 to October 2, 2011. For more information, and all upcoming results, photos, video highlights, press releases and LIVE webcast log-on to;
