Solid Swell Greets Opening Day of ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro
PLAYA DE PANTIN, Galicia / Spain (Tuesday, September 13, 2011) – The opening day of the ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro was greeted with a solid 6ft ground swell as Rounds One and Two were completed with many standout performances by the strong international field who revelled in the powerful conditions.
Brent Savage (Cabarita, AUS) 20, performed a huge opening floater followed by a series of powerful snaps and rail carves to post a last minute victory by claiming an 8.67 out of 10, the single highest wave score of the event so far. Trailing behind the Fontaine brothers from France, Savage spotted his wave coming and went all out to secure it and his pass into the next round.
“There is a lot of water moving out there and it was hard the whole heat. I had a 5 and a 3 and I struggled to get another score until about three minutes to go and I saw a big set coming and I said ‘I’m going to go this thing’ and the guy who was coming second gave it to me. I thought it was going to close out but it kept linking through and I got the score I needed.”
Savage, a promising up-and-comer on the ASP Star tour, is gaining valuable experience on this his first visit to the ‘Old Continent’ and is hoping to improve on his results so far on the ASP European summer leg of events.
“It is my first time to Europe and my first time in Pantin so it is great. I have been making a few heats in each event but no big result so it would be good to make a final. I am taking it heat by heat and trying to focus on getting two good waves.”
Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) 18, locked in the highest two-wave heat total of the day with two quality waves in quick succession to give the young Moroccan a comfortable heat win during the mid-tide peak of the swell. Utilising his strong backhand attack with serious gouges in the critical pocket of the wave, Boukhiam followed advice from fellow competitor Dimitri Ouvre (GLP) which paid off when it came down to positioning on the shifting peak.
“I was watching Dimitri (Ouvre) in his heat this morning and he said it was hard but some fun ones were coming through out the back. I just went out and sat on top of the guys and got a good one, a 7.50. I went back out with them and got another one straight away which was an 8-point ride. It was at the beginning of the heat so I was stoked.”
Boukhiam made the most of the increasing swell and enjoyed the conditions immensely after having fought through the small waves which plagued this year’s Pro Junior series in Europe.
“This year on the Pro Junior series we had a lot of small waves so it is good to have a contest with solid waves and some power so it is perfect. This is my second Star event and I just want to surf my surf and get through and make some heats. It is super cool that there are some waves.”
Leandro Usuna (Mar de Plata, ARG) 23, laid down a combination of high-speed forehand snaps right off the starting bell to be rewarded with an 8.50 out of 10 and a commanding lead which he controlled during the remainder of the 25-minute clash. Usuna found a solid backup score shortly after to complete an ideal performance.
“It was at the beginning of the heat and I knew I had to secure a good score. The wave sat up really nice and it allowed me to get in my turns through to the inside. I heard I got an 8.50 and that gave me the confidence to relax and wait for another good one which is what I did. Relaxed and patient. It worked for me today.”
David do Carmo (Sao Paolo, BRA) 27, also enjoyed the Pantin conditions to let loose on his backhand to amass a heat total of 15.04 out of 20, one of the highest of the opening day. Entering late into the event, do Carmo wasted no time in getting into full swing at the ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro 2011 edition.
“I was training here yesterday in good conditions and this morning I waited for my heat before surfing again. I got a good score on my first wave and then on my second I got another good score so I was very relaxed out there for sure. So thanks to my sponsors who have given me support and thanks to ASP for getting me in the event late and I’m so happy there was a spot for me here in Pantin. It is my second time here and it is great and I am looking forward to the heats coming up tomorrow.”
do Carmo surfed flowing clean lines through to the inside sections to rack up the points in his opening encounter with his powerful style being totally suited to the testing waves on offer. After a promising result last week in Zarautz, do Carmo is continuing to build on his ranking points.
“I like surfing on my backhand here. The waves in Pantin have lots of space for good turns, for longer turns and I think that for me surfing on my backhand is perfect for me. We have big, strong waves today and for me it is fun and I can do some good surfing here.”
The swell is expected to continue tomorrow for Round Three where the events Top seeds will enter into battle for the ASP 5-Star Cabreiroa Pantin Classic Pro title. A first call will be made at 10.30am for a possible start shortly after.
