Countdown Is On for 2011 SriLankan Airlines Pro
ARUGAM BAY, Sri Lanka (Saturday, August 27, 2011) – The event scaffolding is being erected, ASP judges and event officials are en-route and the surfers are testing out the Arugam Bay line-up. The countdown to next week’s SriLankan Airlines Pro is on.
The 2011 SriLankan Airlines Pro is a crucial event for all competitors headed to the teardrop isle. For the men this is the start of the campaign for the 2011 ASP World Longboard Title. Being the first of just two events, ratings points are precious and the heats will be hard fought. For the women the World Title race is over, but the battle for a spot on next year’s ASP Women’s World Title series is on.
This is the first time an ASP World Longboard Tour event has combined with a 6-Star ASP Women’s World Tour event, and ASP Australasia’s General Manager, Dane Jordan is excited to see how the event plays out.
“The 2011 SriLankan Airlines Pro is going to be a great event,” Jordan said. “We will have the world’s best surfers at one of the world’s best right-hand point breaks, with World Titles and Qualifying points on the line. It’s the perfect recipe for a an exciting event.”
Event forecast partners Magic Seaweed are calling that the early days will consist of average low to medium period surf with tricky gusty winds. However the 10 day model offers hope in the form of a long period groundswell during the final days of the competition. This is a long way out and we will be keeping an eye on the storm to see how it develops over the coming week.
August 30th — 2ft Small south-westerly wind swell plus small southerly long period groundswell.
August 31st — 2ft Small south-westerly wind swell plus small southerly long period groundswell.
September 1st — 1-2ft Small wind swell plus small south-easterly long period groundswell building.
September 2nd — 1-3ft Small south-easterly long period groundswell building all day and pulsing.
September 3rd — 2-4ft New south easterly long period groundswell arrives with enough period to wrap down the point at size.
