Waiting Period for SuperSurf ASP World Masters Championships Begins Tomorrow

Sunrise at Arpoador, the site for the 2011 SuperSurf ASP World Masters.

ARPOADOR, Rio de Janeiro / Brasil (Monday, July 25, 2011) ? The waiting period for the SuperSurf ASP World Masters officially begins tomorrow, July 26th, 2011 marking a highly-anticipated return to the ASP schedule for the first time in seven years.

The SuperSurf ASP World  Masters is slated to see an amazing list of surfing icons as they battle for two ASP World Titles, the Masters (Ages 36-49) and the Grand Masters (Ages 50 and over) at the rippable lefthand pointbreak of Arpoador on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.

Tom Curren (USA), 46, former three-time ASP World Champion, will be one legend who is ready to hunt down an ASP World Masters title and the California style-master is excited to be a part of a ?next generation? of ASP World Masters competitors.

?I clearly remember being in South Africa in 1981 and seeing these guys surf those two contests,? Curren said. ?I was so impressed. I feel fortunate to have been a part of that next generation. I came in at a good time.?

Gary ?Kong? Elkerton (AUS), 46, a three-time ASP World Masters Champion, will be in the hunt for his fourth crown and is currently enjoying the opportunity to reunite with his compatriots who contributed to changing the face of contemporary surfing.

?Looking out into the room, I see Ian (Cairns), PT (Pete Townend), Simon (Anderson), Fitzy (Terry Fitzgerald)… the guys that created the Tour,? Elkerton said. ?Then we came along, and all we had to do was step into it. They started it and we took it to another level and changed the lines.

Daniel Friedmann (BRA) helped pave the way for the next generation of Brazilian surfers and was quick to express the importance of remembering surfing?s past champions to preserve the history of the sport.

?This is so important to the history of Brazil and the history of surfing,? Friedmann said. ?When we were doing the Tour, we were looked down on, but now to be recognized as legends in the sport is putting value on it. By putting value on the history, you put value on the future.?

Also competing in the this year?s SuperSurf ASP World Masters will be ASP World Champions Barton Lynch (AUS), Derek Ho (HAW), Mark Occhilupo (AUS), Shaun Tomson (ZAF), Wayne Bartholomew (AUS), Peter Townend (AUS), Cheyne Horan (AUS) and Terry Richardson (AUS). Both the Masters and Grand Masters divisions will feature a round-robin style format.

The waiting period for the SuperSurf ASP World Masters Championships runs from July 26 through 31, 2011.
