Newcastle Surfers Ryan Callinan and Philippa Anderson Win Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior

WAITPINGA BEACH, Fleurieu Peninsula, South Austrealia (Saturday, 16 July, 2011) – RYAN CALLINAN and PHILIPPA ANDERSON won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Fantastic Noodles Pro Junior Men?s and Women?s divisions in clean 1m (3?feet) surf at Waitpinga Beach on the Fleurieu Peninsula in South Australia.

Both surfers hail from the traditionally strong Newcastle City in NSW and their victories today highlight the pair as the next emerging surfers from Merewether Beach in Newcastle which has produced great ASP World Tour surfers like Mark Richards, Simon Law, Matt Hoy and Luke Egan!

For Philippa Anderson today?s win was all the more sweet as she also secured the ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series for season 2011 and qualified for the upcoming ASP World Pro Junior Championship Series, a series of three elite events which begin in Bali during October and finalizes in Australia in January 2012.

?I never expected to win the Pro Junior Series this year and I can?t believe how good I feel right now? said Anderson after her win.

Anderson defeated Sunshine Coast Queensland surfer Naomi Stevic in the final on a combined two wave heat score of 10.00 (out of a possible 20)  to Stevic on 9.65.

?The waves have been good all event here and it?s a great venue to finish the ASP Pro Junior season  ? I remained patient in the final even tho I was trailing for the most part I simply hoped for a good wave and was relieved late in the final to get a second decent ride and take the win.?

Today?s Fantastic Pro Junior Men?s final saw Ryan Callinan jump to an early lead posting a strong 6.6 ride which included a very committed and well executed air reverse final move.

In dropping and inconsistent waves Woods found a 6.5 ride late in the final to be within reach but was not able to secure a second decent ride and Callinan, after 3 second places in previous Pro Junior events in recent years, finally took a win on a scoreline of 12.90 to 10.85.

?I can?t believe I?ve finally won a Pro Junior!?

?These are super hard events to win and I?ve picked the right one to win because it has also secured my place in the World Juniors in Bali so it?s just perfect for me ? I love the wave they surf the opening World Pro Junior in (Keramas on Bali?s East Coast) and I?ll go there full of confidence.?

Thomas Woods wasn?t too disappointed placing second here ? his performance over the entire season sees him take the prestigious ASP Pro Junior 2011 Series titles.

?Great event and I?m really pleased to win the series ? there?s been a long list of great surfers who have won this series and to join them is a real honour? said Woods.

?My goal early in the year was to qualify for the ASP World Pro Junior Series, I?ve done that and won the series so it has been a terrific year for me and I can?t wait to get to the first world event in Bali.?

Equal 3rd placed in the Pro Junior Men’s today were Matt Banting and Dean Bowen, both NSW surfers with Banting’s result squeaking him into the final 4th place on the ratings and qualifying for the World’s!

Sunshine Coast surfer Dimity Stoyle (Buderim) placed equal 3rd in the Women?s, going down in her semi final to fellow Sunshine Coaster Naomi Stevic (Noosa) and that result was enough to maintain her position in number 2 on the ratings for the season and she also qualifies for the ASP World Pro Junior Series.

?Disappointed not to make the final today and win the series but also really pleased and relieved to finish in second place on the ratings and qualify for the Worlds ? Only two qualify and I set a goal this season to qualify and now I?ve achieved that I can concentrate on doing well at the first event in Bali ? It?s exciting and I can?t wait!?

Thomas Woods and Philippa Anderson join past winners of the ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series that includes the likes of Joel Parkinson, Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and  Adrian Buchan which highlight just a few of the champions this series produces!
