Stormy conditions Hit the Oakley Saquarema Prime
ITAUNA BEACH, Saquarema, Rio de Janeiro / Brazil (Saturday, May 28, 2011) - Messy conditions and stormy weather were present throughout the day at the Oakley Saquarema Prime presented by Coca-Cola in day 5 of the event. Onshore winds and a consistent 6 foot swell (2 meters) put the world’s best surfers to the test at Itauna beach, Rio de Janeiro.
The Round of 24 was completed in a marathon-like day of competition that began at 6:30am. In the fifth heat of the day, Junior Faria (BRA) had the day’s highest single-wave score with a 9.23 out of a possible 10 to take out Julian Wilson (AUS) who had held been the in-form surfer of the event.
“This heat was great,” said Junior Faria. “I was lucky to find a good wave early but it’s been tricky, so I guess you’ve got to be lucky and not make any mistakes.”
Local surfer, Raoni Monteiro (BRA) had the highest heat total of the day scoring 14.83 points over Nathan Yeoman (USA) 11.43 points in their match-up in heat 4 of the Round of 24.
“Only a few people know about the righthander that breaks out there,” said Raoni Monteiro. “My dad told me to pay attention because every once in a while that right would come in and I positioned myself and was lucky enough to catch that one. I surfed it to the end and was able to win the heat.”
2010 event winner, Willian Cardoso (BRA) is another step closer to repeating his victory at Itauna beach after winning his heat over Kai Barger (HAW). Cardoso left the water with 4 minutes remaining in the heat after surfing a wave that got him an 8.83 out of a possible 10.
“As soon as I saw that wave doubling-up, I knew that I could get a good score,” said Willian Cardoso. “The conditions are really tough. It’s big and there’s a strong current. I took a couple on the head, but Saquarema’s a great spot for throwing big moves. Luckily, I have a few more hours to rest tomorrow which is crucial since it’s big.”
The other surfer to qualify directly to the Quarter-Finals was Australian, Yadin Nicol, scoring a 7.60 out of a possible 10 on his last wave against Cory Lopez (USA).
“That was fantastic,” exclaimed Yadin Nicol. “I got stuck inside for the longest time and I just kept thinking about getting outside to surf those waves. It’s tough to paddle into the waves, but I gave it all I had on that last wave and I’m happy I got the score.”
The last heat of the day saw Brazilian surfer, Jesse Mendes heading straight to the Quarter-Finals as well against ASP Tour athletes Damien Hobgood (USA) and Adam Melling (AUS).
“It’s really tough,” said Adam Melling. “It kept getting bigger throughout the day and I didn’t even know what size board to use.”
Damien Hobgood agreed with Melling, but enjoys the conditions at Itauna.
“It’s not easy to find waves out there, but I like to surf when it’s like this,” said Damien Hobgood. “It’s almost like Margaret River, where I won a Prime earlier this year. I hope it’s like this tomorrow.”
