Huscenot Dominates Round 1 Finish with Solid Scores at ASP 3-Star Yop Pro Junior

Former ASP World Junior Champion Maxime Huscenot leading at the Yop Reunion Pro Junior.

TROIS BASSINS, Reunion Island (Sunday, April 10, 2011) – Similar clean and glassy three-foot (one meter) waves were on offer on Day 2 of competition, the ASP 3-Star Men’s Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior wrapping-up Round 1 in another fantastic fashion and led by former ASP World Junior Champion (2009) Maxime Huscenot (St Gilles, REU).

Much expected for his second appearance in an ASP sanctioned event on his home island in seven years, Huscenot left no chance to his Heat 9 opponents letting his local knowledge and accurate technique speak to secure the event’s third top score.

“I was pretty excited before my heat and caught lots of waves to warm-up and ended-up being a bit tired when it got underway,” Huscenot said. “It’s great to paddle out here at home and get the chance to surf in front of my home crowds. The waves turned-on for our heat and I am happy with this first step in the event.”

Coming from a series of ASP 6-Star and ASP Prime Series contests in Australia, Huscenot was out of reach for fellow heat competitors, the Reunion Island resident netting 14.25 points in the first half of the 30-minute battle.

“I wanted to compete here and am looking forward to making the final hopefully,” Huscenot added. “The waves look promising for the week, the field of guys here is pretty good and it’s going to get intense for sure.”

In a mix of progressive surfing and classic bottom-to-top maneuvers, the remaining sixteen surfers of Round 1 enjoyed some good surf conditions offering the crowds another exciting performance during two hours.

Last year’s ASP European Junior rankings underdog and now considered a potential Top 5 finisher if not better, Caribbean native William Aliotti (St Barth, BLM) was able to advance as well to get his 2011 campaign underway confidently. Aliotti, whose career peak is an equal 3rd finish in an ASP European Junior 1-Star event, is aiming at confirming last year’s performance and starting the year strong in Reunion.

With promising and consistent swells on the horizon and another seven days of waiting period remaining for the ASP 3-Star men’s Yop reunion Surf Pro Junior and ASP 2-Star Rexona Girls Pro Junior, event officials decided to call the event off for the afternoon and let remaining contenders some time to train and get ready for Round 1 of competition.

“Things are looking good and we are confident tomorrow delivers some slightly bigger conditions,” Yop Reunion Surf Pro Junior contest director Christophe Mulquin said. “We will be back at 10 AM Monday to assess conditions with the ASP head judge and decide if we start Round 2.”

All thirty-two male athletes in contention for this year’s first ASP European Junior Series event crown will meet at Trois-Bassins Monday, April 11, at 10 AM.
