Nick Rupp Wins ASP 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior
Nick Rupp (USA), 18, winner of the ASP 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior.
NEW SMYRNA BEACH INLET, Florida / USA (Sunday, April 03, 2011) – Nick Rupp (Ocean Isle Beach, NC), 18, has won the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 1-Star DNA Energy Pro Junior over fellow finalists Noah Schweizer (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 14, Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 17, and Californian Luke Davis (Capistrano Beach, CA), 18, in a hard fought final in one-to-two foot (.5 metre) surf at New Smyrna Beach Inlet, Florida.
Rupp notched two back-to-back scores in the first half of the Final to overtake early heat leader, Davis, with a 12.77 heat total (out of 20), and held on to the lead throughout the remainder of the tough heat to take out his inaugural ASP Pro Junior event win.
“I was thinking I was just going to get last going into the Final,” Rupp said. “I just got two waves in the beginning and rode them. I’m stoked that Noah (Schweizer) got second too, I’ve been staying with him for the event.”
Geiselman, defending ASP North America Pro Junior Series Champion, made a last-minute charge at the end of the Final posting two 7 point scores, but earned an interference by colliding with Davis to chop his second score in half. Although the local standout would have notched the scores needed to overtake Rupp for the win, the incident saw Geiselman finish 3rd overall.
The next stop on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series will be the ASP 4-Star Rob Machado Pro Junior Experience presented by Hurley and Reef. The event will hit Seaside Reef in California from April 22 to 23, 2011.
