ASP World Number One Kelly Slater to Surf the Telstra Drug Aware Pro
Current ASP World No. 1 Kelly Slater (USA), 39, will surf in the ASP PRIME Telstra Drug Aware Pro.
Margaret River, Western Australia (Thursday March 11, 2011) - Surfing WA today announced that the most successful surfing champion in the history of the sport, Kelly Slater, will be heading to Western Australia for the ASP PRIME Telstra Drug Aware Pro in Margaret River from April 3 to 10.
The current ASP World Champion, who has been dominating the sport of surfing for nearly 20 years, holds the stats of being the youngest and oldest ASP World Champion and has 10 ASP World Titles under his belt. His successes have many sports enthusiasts claiming that the Floridian is the greatest athlete of all time.
Surfing WA CEO and Telstra Drug Aware Pro Event Director Mark Lane said that the continued support of key sponsor Eventscorp had been instrumental in securing Kelly Slater’s appearance.
“We are very fortunate to have fantastic sponsorship support behind us, which has allowed us to increase prize money to a level where we are attracting the best surfers in the world. To have the opportunity to watch Kelly surf live against a field of this calibre is truly exciting.”
The announcement comes after Slater today defeated Western Australia’s Taj Burrow at the Quiksilver Pro in what was a tight finish. Burrow, who was arguably the form surfer throughout the entirety of the Quiksilver Pro will be looking for revenge against Slater at his home break come April.
Slater will join the strongest field in the event’s history, with 26 of the top 32 men’s surfers now confirmed to compete at Surfer’s Point. The line-up will include two times World Champion and last year’s number four Mick Fanning, number three Taj Burrow and number five Bede Durbidge.
It is expected that with Slater’s inclusion the event will draw bigger crowds than ever, further promoting tourism and the local economy. Tourism Minister Dr Kim Hames said, “The news of Kelly Slater’s participation in the Telstra Drug Aware Pro Margaret River is very exciting for Western Australia.
Kelly competed in the Margaret River Pro back in the early 90s at the beginning of his career, so it’s great to have him back now that he is a legend of the sport.”
The 2011 event will be the biggest and best ever, not only showcasing some of the world’s best surfers, but also the biggest prize purse of any surfing event ever held in Western Australia. It is the only Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) prime rated event in Australasia.
