Callinan Spearheads New South Wales Charge As Hurley Pro Junior Reaches Boiling Point
GOLD COAST, Queensland/Australia (Saturday, January 29, 2011) - Ryan Callinan (Merewether, NSW) edged one step closer to securing a junior surfing world record USD$25,000 first place prize as he advanced into the Round of 16 at the 2011 Hurley Pro Junior – Burleigh Heads.
Competitors were greeted this morning with a significant increase in swell, with 1.5-2m waves reeling down the infamous Gold Coast right-hand pointbreak of Burleigh Heads.
Callinan’s classic backhand attack was perfectly suited to the larger waves today, as he posted a combined two-wave heat total of 12.50 (out of a possible 20), advancing to the next round in second place behind Brazilian Krystian Kymerson (15.00) and eliminating Creed MctTaggart (Margaret River, WA – 7.50) and Logan Specht (North Stradbroke Island, Qld – 2.65) who finished third and fourth respectively.
“The swell definitely jumped overnight, and conditions were a little tricky, but surfing Burleigh Heads with three other guys is a dream come true,” said Callinan.
“Hopefully the waves hang in there for tomorrow’s finals and we see some great surfing go down,” he said.
Fellow New South Wales surfer and defending event champion Dean Bowen (Gerroa, NSW) also impressed today, posting a combined two-wave heat score of 12.25 to defeat Cooper Chapman (North Narrabeen, NSW – 9.15), Jason Jameson (Cabarita, NSW – 7.75) and Eli Steele (Caloundra, Qld – 6.45) who finished second to fourth respectively.
An event champion will be crowned tomorrow, walking away with a junior surfing world record USD$25,000 .
