Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Final Day ON, ASP Women’s Title Hangs in the Balance

Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 19, current ASP Women’s World No. 2, is all that stands in the way of Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, claiming her fourth, consecutive ASP Women’s World Title at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico.

SOMEWHERE, Porta Del Sol/Puerto Rico (Monday, November 1, 2010) – The Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico has been called on this morning in two-to-three foot (1 metre) surf at the main site of Porta del Sol, and today could possibly witness the clinching of the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title.

Event No. 7 of 8 on the 2010 ASP Women’s World Tour, the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico will look to finish today with either Stephanie Gilmore (AUS), 22, clinching her fourth, consecutive ASP Women’s World Title or Sally Fitzgibbons (AUS), 19, sending the race to Hawaii.

“We still have fun surf on offer out there this morning and we’ll be commencing the women’s Quarterfinals at 7am,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “We plan to complete the girls with the men on standby for a possible 11am Round 3 start.”

For Gilmore to clinch her fourth ASP Women’s World Title at the Rip Curl Women’s Pro Search Puerto Rico, the following scenarios must occur:

- If Gilmore finishes Equal 3rd or better, she clinches the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title.

- If Gilmore finishes Equal 5th, Fitzgibbons needs to win the event to send the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title Race to Hawaii.

- Essentially, if Fitzgibbons fails to finish higher than Equal 3rd in the event, Gilmore will clinch the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title. Concurrently, if Gilmore advances through the Quarterfinals (one more heat), she will clinch the 2010 ASP Women’s World Title.

Up first this morning will be Lee Ann Curren (AUS), 21, up against Chelsea Hedges (AUS), 27, in Quarterfinal 1.

Surfline, official forecaster for the Rip Curl Pro Puerto Rico, are calling for the  NW/NNW becoming N swell to mix in with the lingering trade swell Monday into Tuesday of next week. Smaller, short period trade windswell is expected for Wednesday.
