Oxbow ASP World Longboard Champion Decided at Makaha
MAKAHA, Oahu/Hawaii (Wednesday, October 27, 2010) – The Association of Surfing Professionals Oxbow ASP World Longboard Championships is headed to Makaha on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu from October 30th through November 7th, 2010 to decide this year’s men’s ASP World Longboard Champion.
The Oxbow ASP World Longboard Championships will see an assemblage of the world’s finest competitive longboarding talent flock to Oahu’s west-coast with winner taking this year’s ASP World Longboard Title.
Kai Sallas (Waikiki, HI), 29, who enters the Makaha event as the No. 2 seed on his native island, is out to capitalize on his familiarity of the wave and the comfort of competing at home to post an impressive result over the international competition in front of his home crowd.
“It’s always nice to compete in the comfort of your own home,” Sallas said. “You get to sleep in your own bed, eat food that your used to unlike foreign countries, and of course the big advantage is just knowing the wave more than the guys from around the world.”
Sallas, who won the last Oxbow ASP WLT event in the Maldives last year, enters the Oxbow ASP World Longboard Championships with a growing confidence from his last win and the gained experience of the tricky man-on-man format, but still feels pressure to perform at one of his local breaks.
I Kind of feel a bit of pressure entering this event as the top Hawaiian,” Sallas said. “I really want to do well in this event, but as the top rated Hawaiian I also feel more confident this year then I have in past WLT events. I’ve never had much man-on-man experience. I learned a lot from last year’s win.”
In addition to the comfort of competing on Oahu, Sallas also feels that the wave at Makaha suits his polished style.
“I surf Makaha quite a bit,” Sallas said. “I love that wave and I think it’s a great wave for longboarding. It’s a long wave that isn’t hollow but still gives you a lot of speed to work with. It isn’t too fast down the line either which allows you to do really big drawn out turns. Especially round house cut backs which I feel are one of my strongest maneuvers.”
