Five Minutes with Jordy Smith by Surfline
HUNTINGTON BEACH, California/USA (Thursday, October 21, 2010) – Jordy Smith (ZAF), 22, current ASP World No. 2, is one of the most talked about surfers on the face of the earth. From his time atop the ASP World Rankings this year to his mind-blowing free surf clips, Smith has built a reputation as one of the biggest names of the generation. With all of the hype built around the South African powerhouse, Surfline.com sat down with Smith to see what has changed for him throughout his young career. This… is their story…
Jordy Smith entered the European leg ranked a close second in the world title race. After Slater’s breakaway performance in both events, Jordy slipped down pretty rapidly. 2010 now looks set to see Slater win his 10th title — and possibly mark his final year on tour. Here Jordy talks about ratings points, a title without Slater on tour and, once again, just having fun with his surfing.
Surfline: You’ve come through the junior ranks and the ‘QS, spent a couple of years on tour and have now been ranked at the top of the ratings as the number one surfer on the entire planet. How’s that been for you?

Jordy Smith: It’s good, you know, but I don’t really care about it that much. I made an oath to myself that this year I was just going to try and have fun with everything and I’ve found that I’ve had my best results when I’m having the most fun. Like down in J-Bay, I was just super relaxed down there. And I don’t really care about the title right now. You know, maybe if I was going into Pipeline in first or second place on the ratings then it’s a different story, but right now there’s still a way to go. It’s like a boxing match and there are still a few rounds left, but someone can knock you out in the next two rounds. So I’d rather just be happy — and that’s what I’ve been. I’ve just been cruising, surfing and enjoying myself.
