Lay Day for ASP PRIME O’Neill Cold Water Classic California
SANTA CRUZ, California/USA (Tuesday, October 19, 2010) – After monitoring conditions throughout the morning, inconsistent surf in the one-to-three foot (.5 metre) range forced event organizers at the ASP PRIME O’Neill Cold Water Classic California to call competition off for today.
“We were hoping to finish Round 1 today but after watching conditions all morning, we’ve decided that the surf is just too inconsistent to run,” Darren Brilhart, O’Neill Cold Water Classic Contest Director said. “We’re expecting a promising swell to hit on Thursday, but will be back tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions.”
Yesterday’s O’Neill Cold Water Classic action saw local standouts Jason Collins (Santa Cruz, CA), 36, and trials winner Jonny Craft (Carmel, CA) start strong while young goofy-footers Evan Geiselman (New Smyrna Beach, FL), 17, and Tonino Benson (Kailua, HI), 20, unleashed impressive backhand performances at Steamer Lane.
Magic Seaweed, official forecasters for the O’Neill Cold Water Classic are calling for swell to drop throughout today and tomorrow before a promising new swell is expected to ignite Santa Cruz on Thursday morning.
Event organizers will reconvene at 7am on Wednesday morning to potentially start competition at 8am.
