Aritz Aranburu Claims ASP 6-Star Supersurf Internacional in Brazil Again

BARRA DA TIJUCA, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Saturday, October 16, 2010) – Aritz Aranburu, 25, simply blitzed the Brazilian leg of the ASP World Star Tour, the surfer from the Basque Country, has claimed the 2010 SuperSurf International held at Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro. That’s was Aritz second final in a row in Rio.

The surfing conditions for today were with 2-3 feet waves on offer at Barra da Tijuca. Willian Cardoso, 24, celebrated the South American title of ASP South America Star Series 2010 in the semifinals. The Brazilians Luel Felipe, 19, and Jean da Silva, 25, stopped by Aritz and Willian, respectively, stood in 3rd at the podium.

“I didn’t win, but I improved my position in the world rankings, I also won the South American title, so there is no way to not be happy”, said Willian Cardoso, who rose from 40th  to 35th on the ASP World Ranking, which qualifies the top 32 ranked for the ASP Dream Tour 2011. “Of course the focus is always on winning, but Aritz (Aranburu) used all his tactics and technique to beat me, everything worked out for him, but it’s very good too.”

Aritz Aranburu had a good start scoring a 5.5 pts and then also scored a 5.67 to open a good gap of 7.84 points. Willian chose to prioritize wave selection, waiting for the bigger sets at Barra da Tijuca. But the conditions didn’t help him due to the strong easterly wind pushing the waves over to the right of the competition area.

The time kept passing away quickly for Willian who sows the Basque surfer widening even more the already big gap with a 6.67 pts in the next wave. In the same set, Willian rode his best wave so far, earning a 5.33 points, needing a 7.01 to take the lead. But the waves vanished and the final score stayed the same 12.34 x 8.66 points.

“I’m very happy. The conditions are very difficult, hard to get a good score but I was lucky to find some open waves to win the contest”, said Aranburu, which is just ahead of Willian on the ASP World Ranking, in 34th place.

He also commented on his great performance on the Brazilian leg of the ASP World Star this year. He competed in six events, made the finals in three and has won two events, one was the SuperSurf Internacional held at Barra da Tijuca, Rio de Janeiro, and the other today at the Praia Mole, Florianopolis, Santa Catarina.

“Yeah. My friends always ask me what happens to me here in Brazil. I don’t know, I think that this country is a wonderful place, I love coming here, I have several Brazilian friends, I love Brazilian food, the environment, I feel very comfortable here and when you feel that way things seem to happen naturally”, said Aritz Aranburu.

The South American title was decided in the semifinal. Willian Cardoso and Jean da Silva faced each other in a rather weak heat with William winning by 9.10 x 8.60 pts, securing the prize money of US$ 5,000 to champion of the 2010 ASP South America Star Series.

That was the richest season in the history of the ASP South America. Twelve contests were run since the beginning of the year in Peru, with the circuit going to places like Ceara, Fernando de Noronha, Sao Paulo, Santa Catarina and finishing with these two successful events in Rio de Janeiro.
