Lay Day for Oakley presents Rio Surf International at Arpoador Beach, Brazil
ARPOADOR BEACH, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Wednesday, October 06, 2010) – With virtually no surfing conditions due to a strong Southwest wind contest organizers have called a lay day at Rio Surf Pro International presented by Oakley. Three calls were made to check the conditions, as it didn’t change, at 11 am a day off was called.
The technical committee meets again at 8 am on Thursday, but forecasts indicate that the wind should continue for one more day and the arrival of a new swell is expected to arrive over the weekend.
“The plan for tomorrow (Thursday) is just make sure whether the conditions improve or not. If it does we will run at least 10 heats. But we have been tracking the forecasts and only on Friday the waves should be more consistent”, said Luis Henrique Campos, Oakley Rio Surf Pro Contest Director.
“We had the idea of calling the surfers of the first heats to give a feedback and also let them help to decide, sharing a little responsibility with them. The forecast is similar to what we had here last year, but we managed to finish the event with good conditions. I hope to repeat”, told Luis Henrique Campos.
Neco Padaratz is the number 1 seed of the Oakley presents Rio Surf Pro International and is scheduled to compete on the opening heat of the next round; He was one who fully endorsed the decision of the technical committee to postpone the event on Wednesday to wait for better waves.
“I think it’s better to wait if we have this expectation of better waves on Friday. Last year was windy too, but there had more waves”, recalls Padaratz. “Today (Wednesday) even the smaller and lighter surfers, that could have more advantage in this condition, complained to me that they were not able to surf; then the decision was well taken.”
