Oakley Rio Surf Pro Completes Round 1 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
ARPOADOR BEACH, Rio de Janeiro/Brazil (Tuesday, October 05, 2010) – The Rio Surf Pro International presented by Oakley began at 7:50 am on the Marvelous City but, due to a strong southwest wind, the contest was called to a stand by around 11am after the 10th heat, being restarted at 13pm finishing 16 of 24 heats scheduled for the first day.
Placed at the spot that is renowned as the birthplace of Brazilian Surf, The ASP 6 Star event began with 122 surfers from 12 countries, having the top seeds to start competing only on the Round of 96, starting on Wednesday at 7 am.
Ulisses Meira won the opening heat of the Rio Surf Pro International presented by Oakley but Adrien Toyon, from Reunion Island, had set the highlight of the day. The waves were small with sets taking a long time to come at Arpoador. On the fourth heat of the day he defeated three Brazilians, posting a 7.17 score and a total heat score of 13.50 points out of 20 possible. Erbeliel Andrade came in second.
“I’ve been to Brazil before but it’s my first time here in Rio de Janeiro. I really liked the city and hope to get good waves here”, said Adrien Toyon. “I’m happy because I managed to find some waves in the heat, despite being smaller than the previous days”.
Only Halley Batista overcame one of Adrien Toyon´s highlights, scoring a 7.5 pts with a strong backside close out reentry on the biggest wave surfed in the morning. Cesar Aguiar won the fight for second place against Sydney Guimaraes.
In addition to Adrien Toyon, five foreign surfers qualified to meet the top seeded surfers in the Round of 96. Trinidad Tobago’s Chris Dennis was turned down at the first day but Jason Torres (CRI) defeated three Brazilians.
Hawaiian Gavin Gillette also started winning and Mexico’s Angelo Lozano did not need to compete on the 10th battery because two athletes did not attend, qualifying Lozano straight to the next round along with Pedro Husadel. Jatyr Berasaluce (ESP) and Carlos Munoz (CRI) advanced in second place in their heats.
So far, nobody has managed to overcome the “local hero” Simao Romao at home. The local from Arpoador beach has won two editions of the Rio Surf Pro International presented by Oakley and is very confident of a third title.
“I don’t think I have to prove anything to anyone anymore. I’ve won two championships, it’s my home break and off course I will try to win again”, said Romao. “I’ll try to give my best to keep the Trophy at home”.
