Women’s Quarterfinalists Decided at Oakley ASP World Pro Junior

CANGGU, Bali/Indonesia (Monday, October 4 2010) – High-octane surfing action continued at the Oakley ASP World Pro Junior, stop no.1 on the ASP World Junior Tour (WJT), in Bali today, with day three of competition completed in clean 3-4ft (1-metre) waves at Canggu.

‘Generation Next’ again raised the high performance bar, dishing out a new-age flavour of progressive surfing in the peaky conditions on offer.

In all, Round 2 and 3 of the Pro Junior women’s and five Round 2 Pro Junior men’s heats were completed before surfing was suspended for the day.

The women’s action was nothing short of amazing with Malia Manuel (HAW), Alizee Arnaud (FRA), Lakey Peterson (USA), Tyler Wright (AUS) and Laura Enever (AUS) leading the charge to the quarter-finals.

Hawaiian surfing ace Manuel inflicted the day’s biggest upset, eliminating 2009 ASP Women’s World Junior champion Pauline Ado (FRA) in their high scoring Round 3 showdown.

Manuel, 16, who shot to stardom winning the US Open two years ago, found grace in the shifting beach break waves, finishing with a 17.90 two-wave total (out of a possible 20) to Ado’s 16.16.

Manuel shot to an early lead, nailing an 8.33 (out of a possible 10) on her first wave before slipping into a sensation barrel to net a 9.57 on her very next wave.

“I haven’t had a good start to a heat in a long time,” she said. “There were just great waves out there this morning and I’m happy they run the girls. It’s good to be back in the competition jersey and surfing really contestable waves.”

Post heat, Manuel said she was a little nervous throughout the 25-minute heat.

“Coming up against anyone in this draw is always going to be a challenge,” she said. ”Facing a former world junior champion was a little nerve racking, but I just stayed calm and hoped that a few waves would roll in.”

Malia will now take on Sage Erickson (USA), who dispatched of Nao Omura (JPN), in the opening quarter-final.

French ace Alizee Arnaud (FRA) was equally impressive as Manuel, notching a 17.10 two-wave total, which included a 9.27, to defeat Leila Hurst (HAW).

She’ll now face reigning ASP Women’s World Junior champion Laura Enever (AUS), who regrouped from an uncharacteristic nervous start to beat Camila Cassia (BRA) 15.60 to 14.93.

“I don’t know what happened to me,” she said. “I kind of freaked out. The pressure of being world champion was kind of getting to me. But I’m glad I regained my composure and had fun. I’m really happy to make it through.”

Lakey Peterson (USA) and Tyler Wright (AUS) also dominated their Round 3 heats and will face off in the last quarter-final.

At the completion of the women’s action, the Round 2 men’s action hit the water for an entertaining afternoon of surfing before strong winds hindered proceedings.

Standout surfers included Krystian Kymerson (BRA), Dale Staples (ZAF), Conner Coffin (USA), Jack Freestone (AUS) and Kaimana Jacquias (HAW).
