Men’s Round 1 Push Performance Limits at Oakley ASP World Pro Junior

CANGGU, Bali/Indonesia (Sunday, October 3, 2010) – The world’s best junior surfers pushed the performance limits at the Oakley ASP World Pro Junior, event no.1 on the ASP World Junior Tour (WJT), in Bali today, with Round 1 of the Pro Junior men’s division hitting the water in building 3-4 ft (1-1.2m) waves.

Looking more like a surfing style fun park, the backup venue of Canggu provided the ideal canvas for the second day of competition, with 48 of the world’s top upcoming surf phenoms unloading an eclectic brand of new-age aerials, stylish tube riding and power rail moves in the race for Round 3 berths.

With excellent conditions on offer, contest director and former ASP World Tour competitor, Beau Emerton, opted to commence surfing at 6.30am, with 16 Round 1 heats being completed before four Round 2 heats were run on the second day of competition.

Reigning ASP Men’s World Junior Champion Maxime Huscenot (FRA) advanced unscathed through his Round 1 showdown against Enrique Aritu (PYF) and Guillermo Satt (CHL) with a high scoring 17.00 total (out of a possible 20).

“The conditions were great,” he said. “I was really excited to come to Bali. I’ve only been here twice, but I’ve always surfed good waves here. I was frothing to compete.”

Huscenot, who is fresh from going down to 9 x ASP Men’s World Champion, Kelly Slater, in Round 2 of stop no.7 on the ASP Men’s World Tour in France, showcased his solid surfing repertoire from his opening ride, netting a 7.50.

But it was his superior tube riding skills that had the crowd cheering.

Sitting on the inside from his fellow competitors, Huscenot jagged a solid peaky Canggu wave before setting up and threading through a double barrel to nab a 9.50.

“I wanted to wait for the sets, but I kind of got a few scores before a big set came through,” he said. “We didn’t get many sets in the heat. But I made what I got count.”

Recently crowned ASP South American Pro Junior Champion Miguel Pupo, 18, threw caution to the wind, unleashing a backside full-rotational, inverted air reverse to collect the morning’s highest individual wave score of a 9.80 (out of a possible 10).

“I don’t know how I did that move,” he said. “I was so deep but I tried to get some wall and then when I got it I did something crazy and made it.”

Pupo finishing with a 16.97 two-wave total (out of a possible 20) to defeat Jesse Mendes (BRA) and Takumi Nakamura (JPN).

Fellow Brazilian and No.1 seed Alejo Muniz (BRA) followed the lead of Pupo, throwing out multiple big moves to nail the day’s highest combined two-wave total of a 17.73 (out of a possible 20), which included a 8.50 and a 9.13.

2010 ASP Australasian Pro Junior Series champion Mitch Crews (AUS), 20, made a perfect start to his campaign, bagging a 16.63 two-wave combination (out of a possible 20) to storm through to Round 3 contention.

“It was fun out there,” he said. “It’s not every day that you get to surf fun Canggu rights with two guys out. I’m psyched to get it uncrowded for once.”

Crews, who started off the 2010 season very solid notching up three ASP Pro Junior wins in Australia en route to claiming the ASP Australian Pro Junior Series title, threw out an entertaining showing of progressive surfing to beat Tyler Newton (USA) and Caio Ibelli (BRA).

“My year has been good,” he said. “I kept busy and had a good streak of results during the junior series. I was pretty pumped coming over here. It’s Bali – it’s the best place in the world.”

The Gold Coast ace finishing the 25-minute heat with a pair of 8’s (8.00 and 8.63) to progress into Round 3 ahead of Newton, with Ibelli relegated to sudden-death Round 2.

Post heat, Crews said he expected competitors to go big in the early rounds.

“Everyone is doing crazy spins and flips,” he said. “You might as well try it. To be the best you need to beat the best and just lift in every heat. The draw is so packed with talent.”

Other standout Round 1 performers included Charles Martin (FRA), Nat Young (USA), Kiron Jabour (HAW), Keanu Asing (HAW), Davey Cathels (AUS), Granger Larsen (HAW), Kolohe Andino (USA) and Evan Gieselman (USA).

The next call will be made at 6.30am at the backup venue of Canngu, for a possible 6.45am start.
