SAN CLEMENTE, California (Sunday, Sept. 7, 2008) – The waiting period for the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Hurley started today, but event officials have opted not to run Round 1 at Lower Trestles this morning. The waiting period for the seventh of 11 events on the 2008 ASP World Tour stretches from Sept. 7-13, 2008.

“There are nice conditions this morning and the swell is about two to four feet and on the increase but we have a great window with four or five days of surf lined up that should be better than today,” Contest Director Mike Parsons said. “The main decider today was that there wasn’t enough consistency. There are good sets every half hour but it wasn’t consistent and we’re expecting really good waves tomorrow through Friday.”

Leonardo Neves of Brazil has pulled out of the event due to visa issues and will be replaced by former ASP Top 45 surfer Shane Beschen (USA). Beschen will meet ASP ratings leader Kelly Slater (USA) and Australian Dayyan Neve in Heat 8 of Round 1.

The first heat of the contest will feature Australian Kai Otton against South Africans Jordy Smith and Travis Logie.

The Boost Mobile Pro will be webcast LIVE on www.aspworldtour.com and www.boostmobilepro.com.

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Monday, Sept. 8, 2008) – The world’s best surfers were treated to perfect conditions at the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Hurley today. All of Round 1 and the first two heats of Round 2 were run in consistent three to five foot waves at Lower Trestles.

Having the opportunity to score another surf in today’s excellent conditions was not lost on ASP World No. 3 Bede Durbidge (AUS) and World No.4 Taj Burrow (AUS). Both surfers came up short in Round 1, but bounced back in Round 2 beating former ASP World Tour competitors Shane Beschen (USA) and Rob Machado (USA) respectively to avoid an untimely exit from the event.

“When I get to Trestles the wave is so much fun that I always get too excited, I don’t know what to do with that perfect wall and I usually blow it,” Burrow said. “I get a bit too over amped. I want to surf it the way I would free surf it. I just want to stay consistent and make some heats.”

Burrow was beaten by injury replacement surfer Sunny Garcia (HAW) in Round 1, but redeemed himself by posting the second highest heat total of the day – 18.50 – when he eliminated Beschen in Round 2.

.

Former Boost Mobile Pro Champion Bede Durbidge (AUS) had to claw his way back into contention after losing to wildcard Brett Simpson in Round 1. Durbidge beat eight-time ASP World Champion and current ratings leader Kelly Slater (USA) in the 2006 final to post his first ASP World Tour victory. He beat Machado in Round 2 to keep his chances of finding himself in another Lower Trestles final alive today.

“Winning in 2006 was definitely a career highlight and it gave me so much confidence for the rest of the tour,” Durbdige said. “Coming back, I have so many good memories and I just love the wave. It’s so rippable.”

Slater is shooting for his third ASP World Tour win at Trestles having entered the event the defending champion and first winning it in 2005. He posted two excellent scoring rides in Round 1 – a 9.60 and 9.00 – to amass an 18.60 out of 20.00 point heat total – the highest of the day.

“There’s really not too much uphill from there,” Slater said. “I had a good heat. I was in sync. My board felt really good and I couldn’t have asked for more. It’s always good to start off with a good heat because it gets your confidence up and you feel better on your feet. I didn’t feel totally good on my feet when the heat started, but then I just got patient and made sure I waited for the second and third wave of the set. They tended to have a little bit better shape down the line.”

Reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) beat Tom Whitaker (AUS) and Machado to book his spot straight into Round 3 today. Currently rated World No. 5, Fanning was pleased to put a solid 17.90 heat total on the board after bowing out of the event uncharacteristically early with an equal 17th last year.

“When you come off of a break it feels good to get a win because you don’t really know where you’re sitting,” Fanning said. “It’s good to go out there and go through the motions and get the ball rolling.”

Sunny Garcia (HAW) earned his berth into the event after Danny Wills (AUS) withdrew for medical reasons and the first, second and third ASP injury replacement surfers declined the spot. Garcia is currently competing on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) hoping to regain a berth on the ASP World Tour, but was happy to take a break from that series to surf the Boost Mobile Pro.

Garcia beat Burrow and local surfer Chris Ward (USA) in Round 1 and now finds himself in Round 3.

“It all kind of worked out for me,” Garcia said. “I was surfing in France and not really getting results and my knees were bothering me, so I wanted to come home and train. I talked to Damien at Boost and he said that he thought they had a spot for me in the event. It worked out good. I came home early and did some training in and I get to surf perfect Trestles with only a couple of guys out, so I couldn’t ask for more.”

Another call on competition status will be made tomorrow morning at 7, but all indications point to an 8am start with Heat 3 of Round 2 featuring three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) up against event wildcard Yadin Nicol (AUS).

The Boost Mobile Pro will be webcast LIVE on www.aspworldtour.com and www.boostmobilepro.com.

Big Airs on Day Two of the Boost Mobile Pro pres. by Hurley

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008) – The world’s best surfers took to the skies at the Boost Mobile Pro at Lower Trestles today. World No. 2 Joel Parkinson (AUS) and ASP World Tour rookies Dane Reynolds (USA) and Jordy Smith (ZAF) are one step closer to vying for a Boost Mobile Pro title courtesy of the airs they boosted today.

Parkinson drew fellow Australian Dan Ross and was well in the lead when he opted to olley over his opponent while racing down the line in the last heat of the day. He added a big air that looked unmakeable at the end and was awarded a 9.93 that increased his lead and secured him a spot in Round 4. He now holds down the highest heat total of the event – an 18.83 out of 20.00.

“There were so many good air sections in that heat and I wanted to do one earlier but I considered more about winning,” Parkinson said. “There were a couple of good air sections on that last one so I just let it fly I guess.”

Parkinson won the Boost Mobile Pro in 2004 and having not tasted victory for awhile, would no doubt relish victory here at Trestles. Sitting just behind ASP No. 1 Kelly Slater (USA), Parkinson is in a position to stall Slater if he does well here. Adding big aerials to his more characteristic carving turns could be key in that.

“Trestles is probably the most high-performance wave in the world,” Parkinson said. “The swell is here, the waves are good and everyone is just going flying. Once somebody does something really good like Jordy (Smith) or Dane (Reynolds), you feel like you have to keep lifting bars. I’ve tried not to think about that, but it’s like instinct.”

Reynolds’ near-perfect 9.97 wave score, the highest single wave score of the event, helped earn him a heat win over Dean Morrison (AUS) and a berth in Round 4. Reynolds threw down a series of seriously critical turns and carves before topping the wave off with a big 360 air to get the score.

“I actually didn’t think that wave was going to be that good,” Reynolds said. “Dean was asking me if I wanted it and I thought it was going to have too much shoulder to it. I figured I’d go and give it a try and it ended up lining up really well on the inside. I really wanted to go out there and do some airs. I just want to have some fun and it seems to be the only way I can make heats, so it works out for me.”

Reynolds made it to Round 4 as a wildcard last year and, should he maintain his current form, looks like he could easily surpass that result last year.

“It’s basically the easiest wave in the world to surf,” Reynolds said. “I think everyone looks pretty comfortable. As far as high performance surfing goes, it’s really easy to display what you’ve been doing.”

Smith looked like he was about to exit the event with his third 33rd (last place) of the season until he hijacked a last minute wave to earn a 9.93 and win the heat. Damien Hobgood (USA) was eliminated.

“I definitely needed that,” Smith said. “I’ve been getting 33rd’s like I’ve been drinking water so I’m just so happy to make it through to the third round.”

Unlike Parkinson and Reynolds, who both surfed their Round 3 heats late this afternoon, Smith showed his flair in Round 2. Only the first four heats of Round 3 were completed today. He’s now ensured an equal 17th but has come into the event hoping to do much better. He hasn’t made it out of Round 4 yet this year.

“I definitely need to get better than a ninth,” Smith said. “This year I’ve had a shocker with boards and I’ve made a lot of rookie mistakes. I’ve been taking boards I’ve never ridden before to places I’ve never surfed before, which is stuff I shouldn’t be doing. I should be prepared more before the contests, which is what I tried to do here.”

Boost Mobile Pro Wildcard Yadin Nicol (AUS) also aired his way into victory over three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) to slot himself into Round 3. Surfing in his third ASP World Tour event as a wildcard – he also had a spot in Fiji this year and last – Nicol nailed some signature aerial maneuvers to advance over Irons.

“You’re not going to get the scores unless you go for it and I like surfing like that; I’m pretty happy with how things went out there,” Nicol said. “Any result for a wild card is pretty big and I’m stoked with how it went. I think I just got a better start. I don’t think Andy found the waves he wanted.”

Nicol has drawn reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning in Heat 9 of Round 3.

Bruce Irons (HAW) won the last ASP World Tour event in Indonesia and maintained that momentum to beat Aritz Aranburu (EUK) today.

“Compared to my last heat that was really good,” Irons said. “I had a bad board in my last heat so I went back to an old-faithful and the waves are good so I just went out and had fun out there.”

Irons has said that 2008 will be his last full-time trip on the tour, but his competitive edge seems sharper than ever.

“Definitely, winning is key,” Irons said. “But it's my last year so I'm just enjoying it and having fun. I'm getting married and having a kid so things are good.”

Californians Timmy Reyes and Taylor Knox avoided early elimination by surfing well and winning their Round 2 heats today – they’ll now meet in Heat 10 of Round 3.

“I’m glad to make it through that second round,” Reyes said. “I’ve had some tough first rounds all year. I’m used to performing at my best and this year I’ve been fighting just to survive. Hopefully this event can break it all out for me.”

Another call on competition status will be made at 7am tomorrow and Round 3 is expected to resume with Heat 5 featuring Bobby Martinez (USA) versus Ben Bourgeois (USA).

Slater Posts Perfect Ten to Top Off Amazing Day of Action at the Boost Mobile Pro

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2008) – The standard of surfing at the Boost Mobile Pro pres. by Hurley was nothing short of electrifying today, but per usual, it was eight-time ASP World Champion and ratings leader Kelly Slater (USA) who stole the show.

With a 9.17 and 9.60 in his Round 4 scoreline, Slater had opponent Kieren Perrow (AUS) needing a combination of scores to beat him with half the heat to go. Still, with 20 seconds remaining, Slater pulled out all the stops and stamped his authority on the heat by posting the first and only perfect 10 of the event thus far.

“I’m not sure it was a 10 – it was a good ride though,” Slater said with a smile. “There was some bump on it, but I was able to get just steep enough in the pocket to get a vertical bang on it and I got that reverse at the end and stuck it.”

Slater surfed twice today, beating wildcard and former ASP World Champion Sunny Garcia (HAW) in Round 3 and then Perrow in Round 4. His upcoming quarterfinal opponent Bobby Martinez (USA) was among a bevy of standout surfers today.

Martinez made his heat with a 9.87 and 8.50 to find himself matched up with the Slater, the two-time and reigning Boost Mobile Pro Champion. The two recently went head to head in Fiji, with Slater victorious there, but barely.

“The surfing has been great,” Slater said. “There was some really good surfing in the heat before mine with Bobby (Martinez) and Kai (Otton). Bobby just ended up out-classing him, so we’ve got a rematch now. I’m not sure how I want to approach it just yet – maybe just like that last heat. Lay it on rail.”

Slater’s pick for form surfer of the event – Dane Reynolds (USA) – wowed again today and took out World No. 2 Joel Parkinson (AUS). Currently campaigning for a record ninth world title, Slater was obviously pleased about that, but isn’t letting his guard down. Always the mathematician, he is already looking at  how the ratings will change when the surfers start to drop their two low results – only 9 of 11 events count toward an ASP World Tour surfer’s final tally.

“I think that it’s a little tricky, because if you drop two results he’s in fourth or fifth, so Bede (Durbidge) or Mick (Fanning) actually have better results if you take the top five out of the seven results we have so far,” Slater said. “Joel has been the form surfer of the event. Him and Dane (Reynolds), Jordy (Smith) and Bede (Durbide) have really stood out as well. If I’m able to make it through my Quarterfinals heat I’ll either face Bede (Durbidge) or Dane (Reynolds) and that’d be great.”

Slater lost to World No. 3 Bede Durbidge (AUS) in the Boost Mobile Pro final in 2006. Durbidge lit up Lower Trestles in a similar fashion today – eliminating fellow Aussie Luke Stedman when he posted a 9.17 and 9.40 to amass an 18.57 out of 20.00 heat total.

“It was a tough heat with Stedman,” Durbidge said. “He got that 8.5 and I knew I had to step it up a bit and I got that nine. He was still within striking distance. I got that last wave and just went for it. I was able to pull off that big turn off and I knew it would be a good score if I rode through it. Then Stedman needed a 10 and it took the pressure off a bit.”

Durbidge is still an outside title threat, and with a win, he could easily reclaim the world No. 2 spot.

“I'd like to get a win,” Durbidge said. “There are a lot of heats to go, but I'd love to get that feeling back of the win, but I'm just going to take it one heat at a time. It's just so fun out there. Trestles is just so rippable and you can really push your turns and I'm just going to take it one heat at a time.”

With five minutes to go, rookie Dane Reynolds (USA) needed a 4.94 to win his heat against Parkinson. He upped the anty with a last second wave to earn 9.33 and a spot in the quarters against Durbidge.

“That was the wave of the day and I really just had to ride it to get my score,” Reynolds said. “If I tried to get a five on the best wave of the day I probably would have fallen on the first turn. I just tried to ride it normal and ended up coming through with the huge score.”

Reynolds is now assured an equal fifth or better placing – his best result this year was a fifth at Bells Beach.

“I just hope it keeps pumping like this because I love Trestles,” Reynolds said. “I’m surprised to get this far so I’m not going to say I’m going to make it further than my next heat because I just don’t know.”

France’s Jeremy Flores scraped his way into Quarterfinal 3 with a last minute victory against the tour’s top rated Brazilian surfer, Adriano de Souza.

“I thought that last wave was going to close out when I took off,” Flores said. “It opened up though and I got the score. It was kind of hard to surf because of the sections, but it was so much fun. I felt good and I thought I wasn’t going to do anything special because of my ankle because the more I surf the more it hurts, but it felt okay in that heat. Adriano (de Souza) has beat me twice this year, so it felt good to beat him.”

The Frenchman will meet reigning ASP World Champion Mick Fanning (AUS) – who beat Taylor Know (USA) today – in the next round.

“Finally, I haven’t passed the fourth round since Bells,” Flores said. Now I get to surf against Mick (Fanning) and it’s going to be so fun. If I win, I win and if I don’t, I don’t. To be able to go out and have fun and surf with your favorite surfers is the best thing in the world.”

The last two heats of Round 4 will be the first action in the water when the Boost Mobile Pro resumes. Heat 7 is a scorcher with Taj Burrow (AUS) and Jordy Smith (ZAF) both looking to secure a spot in the quarters. Heat 8 pits rookies Jay Thompson (AUS) and Heitor Alves (BRA) against one another to see who will exit the event equal 9th and who will go further; either way, their results at the Boost Mobile Pro will be personal bests for both surfers.

Another call on competition status will be made tomorrow morning at 7 and event organizers are hoping to run the last nine heats of the Boost Mobile Pro. If everything goes according to plan the final should hit the water between around 1 pm.

SAN CLEMENTE, California (Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008) –  Kelly Slater (USA) beat Taj Burrow (AUS) 18.97 to 18.63 to win his third Boost Mobile Pro title at Lower Trestles today. He is now as close as one event away from winning a record ninth ASP World Title.

Burrow blitzed early and with a 9.00 and 9.63 in his scoreline before the halfway mark, had Slater looking for a combination of excellent scoring waves to contend. In sheer Slater fashion, the eight-time ASP World Champion fought his way back to claim victory – his fifth of the season.

“I was literally out there just trying to save face, I thought Taj had me – he was on fire,” Slater said. “I was just trying to get out of combo and put on a good show for everybody. I got a 9.7 on a smaller wave that had a clean face and let me get a lot of speed and some big carves and that let me get back in.”

Even with the 9.7, Slater was still searching for an 8.93. Burrow gave Slater a very average looking wave with less than two minutes to go – a mistake that cost him the win and a healthy prize purse. Hurley, the presenting sponsor of the event, threw an additional US$45,000 on top of the standard US$30,000 first place prize purse – the winner of the Boost Mobile Pro presented by Hurley took home US$75,000 today.

“Taj had priority and he let that wave go because it was the first wave and he probably thought it was going to be bumpy but it let me do a lot on it,” Slater said. “It was a really good wave, but it was the first wave of the set.”

To add insult to Burrow’s injury, the final was five minutes longer than the standard ASP final which is usually 35-minutes in duration. Slater talked Burrow and the contest director into lengthening the heat before they paddled out and that was the difference today.

“We went over and talked to Snips (contest director Mike Parsons) before the heat,” Slater said. “Taj wanted to do a 35-minute heat and I said,‘Why don’t we do a 40 minute final, we’ve got all the time in the world this afternoon.’ If we had done a 35-minute heat I would have lost.”

Burrow wore his disappointment at today’s loss on his sleeve.

“I felt like I won,” Burrow said. “I don’t think that wave had the scoring potential. I just had a feeling that they were going to give it to him. He had a lot of energy about him. He’s Kelly and he finished it. He got to the end and I knew it was going to be a good score. I don’t know what else I could have done. I picked the best waves and surfed them really well so it’s frustrating. He was really hungry and ended up clinching it.”

Burrow jumped from World No. 4 to World No. 2 with the result but it was of little consolation.

“I don’t really care about the ratings because I know Kelly is so far ahead that it’s almost impossible to catch him,” Burrow said.  “I just wanted to win the event and I thought I did and now I didn’t, so I’m frustrated.”

Slater has to win the event at the next tour stop in France to seal the deal on title No. 9 there. And even if he does win, should Burrow finish 3rd or World No. 3 Bede Durbidge (AUS) or World No. 5 Mick Fanning (AUS) make the final, the race will continue until the following stop in Mundaka, Spain. World No. 4 Joel Parkinson (AUS) only stays in World Title contention if Slater finishes second or lower in France. Had Burrow won today, Slater would not have been mathematically capable of clinching the title at the next event.

Slater beat 2006 Boost Mobile Pro Champion Bede Durbidge (AUS) in the semifinal round. The heat was a flashback to the 2006 Lower Trestles final the two shared – but with a different outcome.

“I had the opportunity to make the final on the last wave and my front foot slipped and I got caught behind the section,” Durbidge said. “We didn’t get the best waves in that heat and there weren’t many opportunities. The heat came down to the wire and I tried my hardest and that’s all you can do.”

Durbidge maintains his World No. 3 rating with the result.

“I definitely had a good event,” Durbidge said.” I felt really good. I have a good board and I’ll take that to Europe and try to keep the ball rolling.”

Burrow had to get past France’s Jeremy Flores to make today’s final. Like nearly all of the heats held today, the competition was close.

“I think these are the conditions that Taj (Burrow) surfs the best in –the little rights with the onshore winds,” Flores said. “I tried my best and it’s okay. I gave him a go. I came here with no goal at all. I came here to get just a few waves as a warm up for France and it ended up good.”

Flores, who was ASP Rookie of the Year in 2007, made it to the semifinals of the Boost Mobile Pro last year too. He is back in the Top 10 after today’s equal third finish.

“I think I had harder heats this year,” Flores said. “So I’m happier with the result this year compared to last year.”

California’s Bobby Martinez and Dane Reynolds made the quarterfinals, as did Fanning and Brazilian rookie Heitor Alves. The next stop on the 2008 ASP World Tour will start on September 19 in Hossegor, France.
