Nach den hervorragenden Platzierungen bei den US Open und in Nequay, hatte sich Marlon schon auf Platz 9 der WQS-Rankings vorgearbeitet.
In Lacanau liefs allerdings nicht so gut, schon in seinem 1. Heat ist er rausgeflogen und liegt jetzt auf Rang 14 im Gesamt-Classement.
Heute gehts gleich weiter mit dem Ripcurl Pro in Seignosse. Ein gutes Ergebnis hier wäre wünschenswert, sonst gehts ganz schnell weiter runter im Ranking

Marlon packt ein wenig die Ellenbogen aus. Hab mich schon gewundert warum Ben Dunn so einen niedrigen Score hat.
The European contingent was not left behind on this classic surfing day. Marlon Lipke (DEU) and Tim Boal (FRA), both rated No. 14 on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings, advanced today with good performances.
Lipke, who placed equal 5th in the Rip Curl Boardmasters earlier this month, unleashed in Heat 3 defeating ASP World Tour surfer Ben Dunn (AUS) and besting fellow European and ASP Top 45 rookie Tiago Pires (PRT).
"I am stoked to be able to surf these conditions," Lipke said. "I got a good start in the heat and I was just ready to go for the better waves. Ben (Dunn) and Tiago (Pires) are already on the ASP World Tour and I had nothing to lose so I just used every option to make this one."
Lipke, who used smart tactics to trap Dunn and push him to comit an interference on an excellent wave, showed great determination to finish ahead of heat favorites in a tricky heat.
"I was not going to let anything go and I paddled out to win and give my best," Lipke said. "Everyone is hungry for points and you have to stay focused and hold fermly to your goal. I am stoked I made it with Tiago (Pires). The guys on the World Tour are an example and things have been changing fast on the European stage."
Lipke, who stands as a potential ASP Top 45 qualifier for 2009, has had a good summer thus far with a 9th in the US Open of Surfing, a 5th in Japan and a 5th in Newquay, will be looking to get back on track after his Round 1 elimination in Lacanau.

Marlon ist ein Tier!! Heat in der letzten Sekunde noch rumgerissen und auf Platz 2 gelandet, somit das Ticket in Runde 4 klar gemacht!
Er hatte etwas Probleme in den Heat reinzukommen und schaffte erst 4 Minuten vor Schluss nen guten Score, war damit kurzfristig auf Platz 2 , Brent Dorrington kontert sofort und verdrängt Marlon wieder auf Platz 3, bin dann zur Arbeit gefahren und dachte schade das wars...Jetzt schau ich grad die Wertung an. In der letzten Sekunde noch 'ne gute Welle erwischt 6.17 und damit Platz 2!!

MOVES TO 7TH ON THE WQS RATING
German surfer Marlon Lipke is yet another step closer to fulfilling his dream of qualifying for the elite ASP World Tour after finishing 3rd at one of the most important events on this year’s World Qualifying Series (WQS) calendar, the Rip Curl Pro in Hossegor / Seignosse. The Rip Curl Pro is one of eight 6* Prime events on the WQS calendar, and a good result here is what all WQS surfers long for.
“Getting so far in such an important event is amazing and the 2250 points are good, but I really thought I could make it into the final. Jihad Khodr started off well in my semi final heat and I needed a big score. As the tide was going out, I decided to surf the outside. Unfortunately the set I needed never came. But I am stoked for Jihad and of course for Davo (Chris Davidson, who went on to win the Rip Curl Pro). They are both amazing surfers and great sportsmen.
I’m now sitting in 7th on the WQS ratings with 10300 points and things do look promising, but there’s still a lot of work to be done with so many important 6* events left. I guess it is time for a final soon and maybe even a win!
It has been a crazy year for Europeans with so many of us reaching finals at most main events. Miky (Picon), Tiago (Pires), Aritz (Aranburu) and Jeremy (Flores) have been a great motivation for us all and it seems like things are paying off."
Next up is the Billabong Pro Ericeira, a WQS 6* at Ribeira d’Ilhas in Portugal next week.

Davon kann er sich allerdings nix kaufen, denn in der WQS wird am Ende International abgerechnet, da liegt er momentan auf Platz 7, da aber noch einige Fahrer erst jetzt so richtig in die WQS-Saison starten, kann das noch eng werden. 1-2 gute Ergebnisse sollten auf jeden Fall noch her. Am Ende zählen nur die besten 7 Events eines Fahrers egal wie viele Events er mitgefahren ist.

So da bin ich wieder, konnte leider den weiteren Verlauf des Buondi Pro nicht verfolgen. Marlon in Runde 5 Raus, nur eine kleine Verbesserung seines Gesamt-Scores. Da andere Surfer besser waren gehts im Gesamt-Ranking von Platz 7 auf Platz 8
Nächste Chance, der Pantin Pro, ein 5-Star-Event, d.h. für einen Sieg gibt es etwas weniger Punkte als bei den letzten beiden Events. Dafür hat Marlon das Ding schon mal gewonnen, ich meine das war letztes Jahr.
Der Event startet heute. Marlon ist wieder in Runde 3 gesetzt, also wohl wieder am Donnerstag im Wasser.

Wieviele Fahrer aus der WQS kommen in die WCT, sind es nicht die ersten 15 oder? Dann hätte Marlon ja noch dicke Chancen in die WCT zu kommen, wenn er momentan auf Rang 8 rangiert, oder?

Ja Chance ist auf jeden Fall noch da.
Durch das Wertungssystem der WQS kann es aber auch ganz schnell nach unten gehen. Am Ende zählen nur die besten 7 Events jedes Fahrers egal wieviel Events er mitgesurft hat.
Viele Fahrer sind jetzt erst in die WQS-Saison gestartet und haben ihre 7 Events noch gar nicht voll, da kommen also noch ein paar gute Leute von unten angeschossen.
1-2 gute Ergebnisse (Viertelfinale+) sollte Marlon auf jeden Fall noch einfahren damit das was wird mit der Quali.

So in Zarautz gehts heute los mit dem WQS 5*, Marlon ist wahrscheinlich morgen in runde 2 an der Reihe. Mit dabei auch Melvin Lipke und Nick Rupp
Anstatt hier von Contests zu berichten würd ich aber auch gern mal wieder selbst ins Wasser stippen...

Während die "grossen" perfect Trestles surfen war Marlon grad in Zarautz an der Reihe in mal wieder "not so perfect" WQS-Wellen. Hat seinen 3. Runden Heat aber souverän gewonnen.

Nach seinem 1. Runden aus ist Aritz Aranbu gleich nach Hause um noch in Zarautz einzusteigen. Er kam mit den Bedingungen besser zurecht als Marlon

In der Gesamtwertung der QS hält sich Marlon wacker auf dem 9. Platz trotz dem frühen ausscheiden in den letzten Events. Im Oktober gehts weiter auf den Kanaren.
Im Euro-Ranking (für die Quali völlig bedeutungslos) gehts runter auf Platz 3 hinter Tim Boal, der in Zarautz gewonnen hat, und Glenn Hall aus Irland

Tim Boal dürfte damit übrigens die WCT-Quali geschafft haben und die Euroforce nächstes Jahr auf der Dream Tour verstärken

So im WQS-Lager war es in letzter Zeit relativ ruhig, jetzt geht es langsam wieder los.
Herr Lipke treibt sich momentan so wies aussieht in Brasilien rum, beim Rio Surf Pro International, einem 6* WQS Event. Das ganze läuft diese Woche, mal schauen ob er hier Punkte sammeln kann.
Auf den Kanaren läuft zeitgleich ein weiterer 4* WQS Event, der La Caja de Canarias in El Confital, Gran Canaria. Danach gehts da auch weiter mit einem 6* Prime Event in La Santa auf Lanzarote.

Leider knapp ausgeschieden, aber mit dem Quarterfinal kann Marlon seine Gesamtpunktzahl um 600 Punkte heben. Jetzt noch ein gutes Ergebnis und er sollte durch sein.
Weiter gehts übrigens schon in 2 Tagen bein 6* Prime auf den Kanaren, danach Carcavelos

CAPBRETON, France (Sunday, October 12, 2008) - Michel Bourez (Tahiti, PYF) and Marlon Lipke (DEU) got a step closer to qulaifying for the 2009 ASP World Tour today adding a valuable result to their ASP World Qualifying Series points' total after placing respectively equal 3rd and equal 5th in the Rio Surf Pro International pres. by Oakley.
Bourez was defeated in the Semifinals by experienced competitor and former ASP World Tour member Greg Emslie (ZAF) in a wave-starved heat where he was not able to score more than an usually low 9.83 point heat tally (out of a possible 20).
Bourez, who had a tough time last August in Europe making it through one heat only in three events, has been on an exceptional roll since the month of September and repeated his excellent performance once again in Brazil today with his semifinal berth.
"It is a big result for me and these points will put me in a better position for the ratings' race," Bourez said. "I still wanted more because I know I had the opportunity to make the final but I just didn't find the best waves."
Bourez, who jumps from No. 14 to No. 8 on the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Qualifying Series (WQS) ratings thanks to the 1825 points' reward for his run in Brazil, will land in the Canarian archipelago for the upcoming ASP WQS 6-Star Prime Santa Surf Pro on the island of Lanzarote with great confidence.
"I am out of the "danger zone" and flying out to the Canary Islands with a more confidence," Bourez said. "I hope I can get a couple more good results and secure more points for my ASP World Tour qualification."
In four events, including the Quiksilver Pro France where he accomplished one of the best performances of his career defeating ASP World Tour No. 3 and 4 Bede Durbidge (AUS) and Joel Parkinson (AUS), Bourez has placed 2nd in the ASP WQS 5-Star Movistar Pantin Classic and 3rd in the ASP WQS 5-Star Rip Curl Pro Zarautz, now adding an equal 3rd to his quest.
The Tahitian charger, former 2006 ASP European Champion, finished best European in the event, one spot ahead from German ripper and now rated WQS No. 6 Marlon Lipke (DEU).
Lipke, who has gone from No. 9 to No. 6 thanks to a Quarterfinal finish in Brazil, was the second best European in the event and achieved an excellent performance again getting back on track for a possible 2009 ASP World Tour qualification.
Lipke now sits on a solid 10950 points' total and is close to the virtual 11000 point-mark that should secure him a spot among next year's ASP Top 45. The German surfer, if he qualifies, will become the first ever representative of his nation to ever reach the world's elite tour.
Both Bourez and Lipke will surf in Lanzarote next week and have the opporunity of securing their qualification with all the points to clinch in the Prime rated event.

Das hat Marlon ordentlich Plätze gekostet, nur noch Platz 12 im WQS-Ranking.
Der 6* Estoril Coast Pro, der morgen startet könnte recht entscheidend werden. Auf jeden Fall wird das nochmal ein ganz knappes Höschen.

COOLANGATTA, Australia (Monday, October 20, 2008) - Congratulations to Nic Muscroft (AUS) and Jano Belo (BRA) for their wins in the Canaries and Brazil this week.
At the La Santa Surf Pro on Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Nic outpointed Hawaii’s Kekoa Bacalso in the Final with fellow Aussies Phil MacDonald and Drew Courtney in equal 3rd. For Nic this is his second ASP WQS title, the other being last year in the Canaries also.
Across the Atlantic in Brazil at the Maresia Surf International at Itajai, Brazilian Jano Belo has taken out his first ever ASP WQS win defeating Hawaiian Dustin Barca with Brazil’s Marcio Farney and Japan’s Masa Ohno in equal 3rds.
Now to the Men’s ASP WQS ratings and there has been a lot of major changes.
MacDonald, Muscroft and Barca have moved into the Top 20 at the expense of Simpson, Monteiro and Paulino.
The Top 3 remain unchanged, 4th is now Drew Courtney (AUS) jumping up from 11th and David Weare (ZAF) in 5th.
The big movers upwards this week other than Drew were Gabe Kling 15th top 9th, Phil MacDonald 21st to 10th, Nic Muscroft 26th to 10th, Dustin Barca 25th to 14th, Kekoa Bacalso 44th to 22nd putting him a possible position to make the cut with another result like this one and Jano with his win jumped from 166th to 91st.
Unfortunate losers in the ratings were Marlon Lipke 6th to 12th, Michel Bourez 8th to 13th, Yadin Nicol 10th to 16th and Hizunome Bettero 12th to 19th.
As you can see from the list below we now have 11 guys with over 11,000 points, which was the magic number a few months ago and I still feel they are safe.
The Top 15 qualifiers for next year’s Dream Tour are as shown as there are no double qualifiers so the cut off for now is at Tiago on 10,750.
With two ASP WQS 4-Star, two ASP WQS 6-Star and then the two Hawaiian ASP WQS 6-Star PRIMES left I don’t think much will change from now on.
The reason being is that at the 4-Stars, unless you win one of these, the points won’t help as nearly everyone is carrying a low score to be replaced of around 1,000 points. For the 6 Star in Brazil and Portugal this is basically every ones last chance to make more points as in the last two Hawaiian big ones nearly all the Top 45 Men’s Tour surfers and hot locals have entered and as usual expected to take all the top spots. Perhaps one or two other than them may get a Final but that’s it.
Surfers carrying some low throwaways that could jump in the ratings are Simao Romao (BRA) and Kekoa Bacalso (HAW). Those inside the Top 15 that can jump also are Phil MacDonald (AUS), Josh Kerr (AUS) and Dustin Barca (HAW).
Guys near the cutoff like Bourez (PYF), Lipke (DEU) and Muscroft (AUS) are all looking to better 1125 points so need 9ths or better.

Ich glaube ja, dass Marlon Lampenfieber (zu viel Erwartungsdruck) hat. Überall wo es super laufen soll, fliegt er sofort raus (La Santa) und dort wo er unter fernerliefen mitsurft, kommt er weiter (Brasilien), deshalb prophezeie ich ein schlechtes Ergebnis in Portugal und ein gutes Abschneiden auf Hawaii. Würde mich aber auch nicht stören, wenn es anders kommt. Hauptsache er schafft es.

Beim La Santa hat halt auch einfach das Quentchen Glück gefehlt. Marlon hat 2 gute Scores eingefahren aber die Konkurrenz war ein Tick besser und das Starterfeld war sowieso recht heftig, lauter Jungs aus der Top45 oder ehemaligen Top45

ESTORIL COAST PRO MOVES BACK TO CARCAVELOS, CALL AT 3 PM
GUINCHO, Portugal (Saturday, October 25, 2008) – The sixteen surfers who will surf in the first Man-on-man clashes of Round 5 have decided to go back to Carcavelos and wait for the famous sandbanks to start delivering their renowned quality barrels.
The swell is picking up fast and some nine foot (3 meter) waves are expected tonight at Guincho giving a very good chance to see some great action in smaller but clean and consistent surf at Carcavelos.
The Estoril Coast Pro is reaching its business end and the exciting Man-on-man battles will resume this afternoon. Big names and outsiders will be playing big with some of the remaining competitors getting very close to securing a berth for next year's ASP World Tour.
The Estoril Coast Pro will be back LIVE from 2.30 PM at Carcavelos. Stay tuned and watch local hero Tiago Pires (PRT) have a chance at jumping into the ASP WQS ratings' Top 10.

COOLANGATTA, Australia (Monday, October 27, 2008) - The ASP WQS cutoff hits 11,000 points as Brazilians Jean Da Silva and Wiggolly Dantas win ASP WQS 6-Star events on both sides of the Atlantic.
The ASP WQS cutoff has hit 11,000 after the second week in a row where the ASP WQS Top 15 frontrunners failed to protect their lead. Of the Top 15 going into the last ASP WQS 6-Star events, only six of them reached a Quarterfinal or better. At Lanzarote, Drew Courtney with a 3rd, at Maresia, Dustin Barca with a 2nd, in Onbongo, Josh Kerr with a 5th, at Estoril, Gabe Kling with a 2nd, Tiago Pires with a 3rd and Marlon Lipke with a 5th.
The failure of these guys to take the big points as they have all year has meant that all those below them have jumped up dramatically in the ratings, and now, with just the two ASP WQS 6-Star Primes in Hawaii left and most of the ASP Top 45 competing in them, the surfers who are able to overcome the Dream Tour combatants and hot Hawaiian locals have a great chance of qualifying. However, seeing that the chances of that happening are slim, the current ASP WQS Top 15 look like they’ll be the goods.
At the Onbongo event in Brazil, 7 of the final 8 were Brazilians with Josh Kerr the lone Aussie. Across the Atlantic in Portugal at the Estoril Pro, it was a mixed bag with 7 different countries in the final 8.
Up at Santa Cruz at the ASP WQS 4-Star O’Neill Coldwater Classic, it was USA mainland versus Hawaii for the final 16 surfers, with junior surfer Nat Young coming out on top while Mason Ho was victorious in the ASP Pro Junior division.
In the ratings, the Top 15 remain unchanged except for Hizunome Bettero (BRA) and Simao Romao (BRA) replacing Michel Bourez (PYF) and Dustin Barca (HAW), however, inside the Top 15 are major changes.
Gabe Kling (USA) has moved up from 9th to 3rd, Josh Kerr (AUS) from 7th to 4th, Tiago Pires (PRT) 15th to 6th and Marlon Lipke (DEU) from 12th to 9th, while ping down were Pat Gudauskas (USA) 6th to 11th, Drew Courtney (AUS) 4th to 7th and David Weare (ZAF) 5th to 9th.
The big mover outside the Top 15 into a possible contention slot was Jadson Andre (BRA), 32nd to 18th.
Surfers carrying some low throwaways that could jump in the ratings are Dustin Barca (HAW), Jadson Andre (BRA) and Kekoa Bacalso (HAW). Those inside the Top 15 that can jump also are Phil MacDonald (AUS), Simao Romao (BRA) and David Weare (ZAF).

Only ASP WQS event this coming week is the ASP WQS 4-Star Xcel Pro in Hawaii, which looks like getting underway tomorrow with a good swell hitting the North Shore. As it is only a 4-Star, it is very unlikely that there will be any significant changes inside the ASP WQS Top 15.

So jetzt heisst es für Marlon abwarten und hoffen, dass die anderen in Hawaii keine hohen Punkte erreichen. Er hat jetzt quasi kaum noch eine Chance sein Punktekonto selbsst zu erhöhen
In Hawaii werden auch wegen der Triple Crown auch wieder viele Dream Tour Pros am Start sein, somit wird es auch für die anderen schwer hier hoch zu Punkten.
Tiago Pires hat sich in der WQS vor Marlon auf den 6. Platz vorgeschoben, ich gehe aber davon aus, dass sich Tiago noch direkt über die Dream Tour qualifiziert, somit wird da auch noch ein Platz frei.
Sieht also insgesammt sehr gut aus, Daumendrücken ist aber noch angesagt

MARLON LIPKE MAKES QUARTERS IN PORTUGAL – MOVES TO 9TH ON THE RATINGS

After dropping back to 12th on the WQS ratings after the 6* Prime in Lanzarote and in need of a big result in the last European contest of the season, German surfer Marlon Lipke, 24, rose to the occasion and overcame the pressure to finish 5th at the Estoril Coast Pro. By making the quarters, Marlon collected 1625 vital points and with a total of 11450 now sits in 9th on the WQS ratings with the two last big events in Hawaii to go.
“I guess I surfed some of the most important heats of my life this week. A lot of people were asking me if I was nervous going into this event, but to be honest, I wasn’t really. I just tried to enjoy the days here in Lisbon as much as possible. I had my brother here, my dad came up and they did a good job to keep my mind off the whole thing. It is really important for me to be distracted before my heats; play soccer, get away from the beach, train…
The 5th place makes me much more relaxed going into Hawaii.”

Wichtig wäre jetzt, dass Tiago Pires sich noch über die CT qualifizert damit auf der WQS noch ein Platz mehr frei wird. Marlon liegt zusammen mit Weare punktgleich auf Platz 14, wie da entschieden wird wenn die beiden gemeinsam auf Platz 15 abrutschen weiss ich auch nicht.
Die Möglichkeiten für Marlon:
Flucht nach vorne:
- Tiago schafft es sich über die CT zu qualifizieren, damit wäre 1 Platz gewonnen
- Mit einer Viertelfinalteilnahme kann es 2 Plätze nach oben gehen
Wenn Marlon schon vor dem Viertelfinale ausscheidet wird es ganz ganz eng
Diese Leute können noch vorbeiziehen:
- David Weare, momentan punktgleich, muss nur in Runde 5 kommen um Marlon zu überholen.
- Patrick Gudauskas benötigt eine Viertelfinalteilnahme
- Phil Macdonald muss in Runde 4 kommen, und dort in seinem Heat mindestens 3. werden
- Hizume Bettero muss ins Viertelfinale kommen
- Simao Romao benötigt eine Viertefinal-Teilnahme
- Brett Simpson braucht ein Halbfinale
- Jadson Andre muss ins Halbfinale
- Yadin Nicol muss das Halbfinale erreichen und dort in seinem Heat min. 3. werden
- Wigolly Dantas muss ins Halbfinale
- Sunny Garcia muss ins Finale
- Raoni Monteiro muss ins Finale
- Pedro Henrique muss ins Finale und dort 2. werden
- Heitor Alves reicht ein 3. Platz im Halbfinale
Mit einem Sieg wäre auch noch für die Herren in den 30er eine vorbeiziehen möglich.
Von den oben genannten Szenarien dürfen also max 2 wahr werden vorausgesetzt Tiago qualifiziert sich direkt.
Besonders gefährlich, Phil MacDonald und David Weare müssen wohl nur 1-2 Heats überstehen um das geforderte Ziel zu erreichen.

Hmm, er muss auf Platz 27 kommen, ist momentan auf Platz 30.
Schwer zu sagen da es auch sehr von der Konkurrenz abhängt. So ein equal 9th oder besser könnte da schon ganz hilfreich sein.

hmm in seinem heat ist schonmal cj hobgood...naja den muss er auch mal schlagen können, wenn er auf die wct will.

Bei den Scores für die einzelnen Rider ist aufgelistet welcher Gesamtjahresscore erreicht wird wenn der Rider die entsprechende Platzierung beim O'Neill Cup erreicht. Da ist schön zu sehen dass Marlon erst Punkte dazu gewinnt, wenn er min. 13. wird. Das bedeutet ab Viertelfinale gibts für ihn Punkte dazu.
Schön auch zu sehen, dass Phil Macdonald sich eigentlich nur an den Eiern rumspielen muss und trotzdem punktet, wenn er in seinem ersten Heat (Runde 4) mindestens 3. wird, also sogar wenn er ausscheidet. Falls Marlon nicht ins Viertelfinale kommt ist es also beinahe sicher dass er von Phil überholt wird.
David Weare punktet auch bereits wenn er in seinem ersten Heat Platz 1 o. 2 erreicht. Hab auch vorhin nochmal ins ASP Regelwerk geschaut, wenn ich das richtig verstanden habe, falls die beiden nach dem Contest immernoch Punktgleich sind, bekommt Weare den Vorzug, da dann geschaut wird wer von den beiden aus den 6 besten Contests die höchste Punktzahl erreicht und das wäre Weare.

So hier noch mal eine Liste von den Leuten, auf die es zu achten gilt. Vorne steht die aktuelle Platzierung, hinten die Platzierung, die erreicht werden muss um über 11450 Punkte zu kommen, bzw. hinterher vor Marlon zu liegen, wenn er sich nicht verbessert.
Wenn er abrutscht gibt es noch die kleine Hoffnung dass Josh Kerr auf seinen Platz auf der WCT verzichtet (er hat 2008 nicht mitgemacht weil er meinte die Tour würde sein surfen limitieren) und Tiago sich direkt qualifiziert. Es wäre also theoretisch möglich, dass Marlon auch mit einer End-Platzierung als 17. sich noch qualifiziert.

Aktueller Stand,
David Weare und Phil Macdonald sind im Gesamtrating an Marlon vorbeigezogen, jetzt liegt er auf Platz 16, könnte also jetzt nur noch mit Schützenhilfe von Tiago Pires auf die Tour kommen. Allerdings war Pat Gudauskas gestern ziemlich on Fire und benötigt nur noch einen Heat um ebenfalls vorbeizuziehen.

SUNSET BEACH, Oahu (Wednesday, December 3, 2008) - It was a tough day for all O'Neill World Cup of Surfing competitors at Sunset Beach today and Round 4 of the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) 6-Star Prime event was completed in 15 to 20 foot (5 to 7 meter) waves.
Eric Rebiere (FRA), 29, a former ASP World Tour member, was the only one of seven European surfers to tame the massive sets coming in at the world famous location of Sunset Beach to advance through to Round 5 of the final event of the year. Rebiere, who eliminated fellow Frenchman and current ASP World Tour No. 10 Jeremy Flores (FRA) as well as Irish charger Glenn Hall (IRE), found two solid waves to secure his Round 5 ticket ahead of Phillip MacDonald (AUS).
"It is big out there and I usually like it when it is like that," Rebiere said. "I hurt my back four days ago and I haven't been able to surf apart from my heats so I am pretty stoked to make it through."
While current ASP World Tour Europeans Flores, Miky Picon (FRA) and Tiago Pires (PRT) all bowed out today, pressure was upon German surfer Marlon Lipke (DEU) who had to get through his heat to keep any 2009 Dream Tour hope alive. Unfortunately, the German ripper was not able to find a good enough back-up ride and was eliminated by Hawaiian Hank Gaskell (HAW) and former ASP World Champion CJ Hobgood (USA) in Round 4.
Lipke, who drops back to No. 16 after today, now depends on a few other surfers' results to still have a chance to make it to the 2009 ASP Top 45 and several scenarios can happen.
If Patrick Gudauskas (USA) gets an equal 13th at Sunset Beach, Lipke will move back one spot in the ratings. If Yadin Nicol (AUS) places 4th or better or Dion Atkinson (AUS) finishes runner-up, the German surfer will move back as well. However, if Lipke remains No. 16 after Sunset Beach, a big result from fellow European Tiago Pires at the Billabong Pipeline Masters could give the Portuguese surfer a double qualification ticket leaving one more spot for the WQS campaigners sitting on the bubble.
The surf is supposed to remain as big in the next couple of days and Eric Rebiere will be at ease in the solid waves. He will surf in Heat 7 of Round 5 against Hawaiian chargers Ian Walsh (HAW) and Kamalei Alexander (HAW) and Kirk Flintoff (AUS).

achja und was ist mit den leuten die evtl aufhören z.B bruce irons und wohl auch andy, dann faselt kelly ja immer was von ruhestand(was ich nicht glaube), taylor knox hat auch so was in der art mal verlauten lassen...gehen deren plätze an jungs aus der wct oder kommen dann mehr von der wqs rein?
ansonsten wäre marlon ja erster replacement surfer, so wie letztes jahr nic muscroft, der hat ja auch 4 oder 5 events mitgesurft.

Marlon ist tatsächlich jetzt erstmal 16. und damit Replacement Surfer, fällt ein WCT-Pro bei einem Event aus, wird Marlon als erster gefragt ob er mitfahren will.
Zu Josh Kerr hab ich leider noch keine offiziellen oder inoffiziellen Statements gehört, da er sich aber so auf der QS reingehängt hat schätze ich eher dass er seinen Platz nicht freigibt.
Die Leute, die freiwillig auf der CT aufhören geben ihren Spot an den nächsten CT-Fahrer weiter der nicht qualifiziert ist. Kommt Marlon also auch indirekt zugute, da Tiago so nach vorne rutscht und es leichter hat sich noch direkt zu qualifizieren. Gut ist auch dass Tiago völlig ohne eigenen Druck surfen kann, er hat im Prinzip nichts zu verlieren und kann sich ein paar tiefe Pipe-Barrels reinziehen.
Kelly Slater hat sich übrigens schon für den 1. Event in Snappers angemeldet, er will die 10 voll machen. Für Pipe ist er aber scheinbar noch nicht angemeldet

also ein 9. Platz für Tiago in Pipe wäre schon gut damit das Marlon was hilft.
Unter ganz verrückten Umständen könnte auch ein 17. Platz reichen, wen AI und BI nächstes Jahr beide nicht antreten und Roy Powers ebenfalls nicht über den 17. Platz hinauskommt bzw. Mick Campbell 'nen 33. einfährt

Hab noch 'ne Neuigkeit. Gibt da leute auf fantasysurfer die behaupten folgendes:
Wenn 2 Fahrer freiwillig nicht mitfahren nächstes Jahr, geht der 1. frei gewordene Spot an den ersten WCT-Fahrer der nicht qualifiziert ist, der 2. frei gewordene Spot geht an die WQS.
Somit könnte es also sein dass Marlon drin ist wenn beide Irons-Brüder ihren Spot abgeben, egal was Tiago macht. Weiss aber nicht ob das wirklich so ist.

WAIMEA BAY, Oahu (Saturday, December 6, 2008) - That's it, the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) have come to an end celebrating its sixteenth year of action and success around the world and massive surf blessed the final event of the 2008 season, the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing won by former ASP World Champion CJ Hobgood (USA). With WQS contenders having a chance to qualify until the final day of the year, it added serious pressure to the already tensed atmosphere brought by the testing conditions.
All fifteen names are now officially published and the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Europe congratulates Michel Bourez (No. 2, PYF) and Tim Boal (No. 11, FRA) for qualifying, as well as Tiago Pires (No. 13, PRT) for requalifying through the Grind. Bourez and Boal will be rookies on next year's ASP World Tour, keeping up Europe's impressive roll since 2006 when Miky Picon (FRA) first qualified for the Dream Tour. In three years, the number of Europeans on tour has gone from 1 to a minimum of 5 next year, Jeremy Flores (FRA) leading the charge by far with impressive results at 20-years-old only.
Guaranteed to compete on next year's Dream Tour are Jeremy Flores (FRA), Miky Picon (FRA), Tiago Pires (PRT), Michel Bourez (PYF) and Tim Boal (FRA). A total of five men that could rapidly go to seven if Aritz Aranburu (EUK) gets the injury wildcard he has applied for and Marlon Lipke (DEU) ends up getting in if Pires secures a big result at the upcoming Billabong Pipeline Masters starting December 8.
Lipke is sitting on the bubble at the moment with his fate being in Pires's hands after an impressive run on the WQS in 2008. Pires, who has impressed all year at all barreling lefthanders on tour including Indonesia where he finished 3rd, is expected to do well in what should be a solid Pipe. His peers know how deep the Portuguese can get on his backhand tuberides and everyone will have fingers crossed for Lipke who showed he deserved his Dream Tour spot.
Apart from competition, many of Europe's usual WQS performers have been enjoying the 15 to 20 ft swells hitting the North Shore since the O'Neill World Cup of Surfing ended, including female representative Lee-Ann Curren (FRA) always happy to charge whenever she can. Pires's fellow countryman Ruben Gonzalez (pictured, PRT) broke a board in pumping Pipeline leaving the water with a smile on his face while Michel Bourez got caught under three waves of another massive day feeling more alive than ever after coming home.
As the swell seems to be dropping, lots of intense action still to come on Oahu's North Shore. All four ASP World Tour Europeans will enter the waiting period of the final event next Monday, December 8, with the will to wrap up 2008 as good as possible.
Flores, currently No. 10 in the world, has all skills to get into that Top 10 in one of the most spectacular waves on tour while the crew's only goofyfooter Miky Picon (FRA) who is sitting No. 18 will be one to watch in the expected hollow barrels. Pires, as said earlier, needs to improve his current rating by two spots to open the door to Lipke, and Aranburu has yet to get his first big result of the year.

Interessant wird was das neue Heat-Format in Pipe anrichtet. Tiago ist in Runde 3 gesetzt und muss 2 Heats überstehen um 9. zu werden und somit Marlon die Quali zu ermöglichen.
Pipe ist schonmal ein kleiner Vorgeschmack an dem was uns im nächsten Jahr an Regeländerungen erwartet. Ganz durchschaut habe ich das noch nicht

while last European surfer Tiago Pires should be surfing in Heat 14 of Round 2 when competition resumes tomorrow. There is still a serious doubt on Pires paddling out as the Portuguese man injured his back a couple of days ago and has yet to confirm his presence.

Eine weitere Interessante Möglichkeit für Marlon hat sich aufgetan.
Wenn Jordy Smith und Dean Morrison nach Pipe beide min 28. sind, wird eine Injury-Wildcard frei, da dann nur noch 2 weitere Verletzte CT-Fahrer da sind, die Wildcard wird dann an die WQS weitergegeben wird.
Möcht grad nich in Marlons Haut stecken, diese Warterei muss furchtbar sein.

WAIMEA BAY, Oahu (Sunday, December 14, 2008) – With the Billabong Pipeline Masters coming to an end yesterday, the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International officially announced the new ASP Top 45 members who will compete on the world’s best waves for a shot at the prestigious ASP World title in 2009. After a historical year for European surfing in 2008 that saw four of its soldiers join the elite, next year will be another record for the rising nation in the sport as a total of seven competitors from Europe will be part of the Dream Tour.
With Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Miky Picon (FRA) guaranteed to requalify after their respective second and third places in Brazil, pressure was on those waiting for wildcards or big results in the last event of the year.
Tiago Pires (PRT), who was sitting No. 30 in the world before the Pipeline event, had a shot at requalifying directly through the ASP World Tour with a good result but unfortunately got injured, having to use his ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) No. 13 rank to secure a berth amongst next year’s ASP Top 45. That could have affected Marlon Lipke’s (DEU) fate as the German surfer, who finished his 2008 qualification campaign ranked No. 16 just outside the qualifying group, was hoping for Pires to score big at Pipeline and leave his WQS spot available.
Despite Pires not attending the Billabong Pipeline Masters, Marlon Lipke was given a wildcard by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) International and the World Professional Surfers (WPS) getting his 2009 ASP World Tour ticket and joining the biggest European crew on tour ever. Lipke, a former ASP European Junior champion, who came to the final events on the North Shore of Oahu ranked No. 9, lived a nightmare during the two consecutive ASP WQS 6-Star Prime events where he dropped down to No. 16. Eventually, rewarding him for his stellar year and efforts, Lipke makes it to the top of the sport and becomes the first German surfer ever to compete on the ASP World Tour.
With ASP WQS campaigners Tim Boal (FRA), who was guaranteed to qualify after an impressive summer run, and Michel Bourez (PYF) who secured his Dream Tour pass after winning the prestigious ASP WQS 6-Star Prime Reef Hawaiian Pro, the last man waiting to find out about his destiny for 2009 was Aritz Aranburu (EUK).
Aranburu, who suffered three consecutive injuries during his rookie year among the ASP Top 45, ended the year with an equal 9th in the Billabong Pipeline Masters, a last effort that convinced the ASP and the WPS to award him a wildcard and a second chance to show his surfing in 2009. Aranburu had to wait until the end of the final day to be guaranteed to surf on next year’s ASP World Tour, the first ever Basque surfer being fully recovered and looking more determined than ever to get things going.
With seven men flying the European flag on the 2009 ASP World Tour, European surfers have made it clear that what many thought was historical in 2008 when four men qualified, is only the beginning of an era that could possibly see a European surfer become an ASP World Champion in the future.
