Will Nat Young join the elite in 2012?
SUNSET BEACH, Oahu/Hawaii (Thursday, December 1, 2011) – Nat Young (Santa Cruz, CA), 20, 2009 ASP North America Pro Junior Series Champion, has battled through the ranks, flaring on the ASP World Junior scene while building a platform on the men’s ASP World Ranking. While remaining relatively quiet throughout the first half of the 2011 season, the talented goofy-footer has been doing damage in Hawaii this year. Young made the Final at the Reef Hawaiian Pro in Haleiwa and was just responsible for a massive upset in his Round of 64 heat at the Vans World Cup at Sunset Beach. The ASP recently caught up with Nat to get his thoughts on his Hawaiian tear and his sights on the ASP World Tour for 2012. This… is his story…
How much does making the Final at Haleiwa help your confidence going in to the Vans World Cup at Sunset?
“My result at Haleiwa was a great confidence booster and this is completely different out at Sunset because we have waves,” Young said. “I’ve spent a little time out here at Sunset and done pretty well here in the past so I feel pretty comfortable out there. I think this is the hardest waves to surf. It’s really hard to figure out where to sit. I’m comfortable surfing on my backhand being from Santa Cruz, but we don’t usually get to ride big boards, so it’s different.”
Beating Pancho Sullivan, Kieren Perrow and Tiago Pires was no easy task, what were your thoughts going in to that heat?
“Pancho (Sullivan) is arguably the best surfer out at Sunset and Kiren (Perrow) and Tiago (Pires) are both good surfers in good waves so I knew it was going to be a really hard heat,” Young says. “Since we’ve had a few days off I’ve had plenty of time to think about it and plenty of time to get nervous, so it always feels really good to win those ones.”
You’re currently sitting at 51 on the ASP World Ranking, so how important is another result at Sunset?
“I had a bad first half of the year and the second half has gone a lot better,” Young said. “It feels good to have gotten that result at Haliewa and now another good result here at Sunset so hopefully I can keep my Triple Crown hopes alive. I’ve had a couple of results throughout the back half of the year, so it’s going to help my seed and hopefully I can qualify for the World Tour at the halfway mark of next year, that’s my goal.”
