ITAMAMBUCA BEACH, Sao Paulo State / Brazil (Wednesday, October 12, 2011) - “Children’s Day” celebrations hit the surfing world as well this Wednesday. In France, the youngest surfer on the ASP World Tour, Gabriel Medina (BRA), 17, won his first event at the elite level. While in Brazil, the youngest athlete competing at the ASP 6-Star SuperSurf Internacional, Filipe Toledo (BRA), 16, also had the day’s best performance, scoring the event’s highest single-wave total of an 8.67 (out of 10) at Itamambuca Beach, Sao Paulo.
“I’m really happy to have won that heat,” said Toledo. “It would have been even better if my brother had won his heat as well. It was the first time we ever competed in a heat together but I’m sure there will be others in the future.”
Runner-Up in the heat against Toledo, Willian Cardoso (BRA) eliminated Toledo’s older brother, Matheus Toledo, from competition.
“I knew it was going to be tough because both Toledos know this spot really well,” said Cardoso. “So I tried a different strategy and tried to stay farther away at the spot where everyone was surfing yesterday (Tuesday) and ended up catching a good one. I’m stoked because I need a good result so I won’t drop down in the ranking.”
The latest “Great American Hope” in the surfing world is youngster Kolohe Andino (USA), 17, who sits at No. 42 of the ASP World Ranking. With a heat wave total score of a 15.43 (out of 20), Andino guaranteed his victory in Heat 13 alongside Rafael Pereira (VNZ) who qualified in second place.
“I hoped that the swell would have been a little bigger, but there are still good waves out there, so I just tried to surf without any pressure,” said Andino. “I like this place a lot. This year I competed in Saquarema (Rio de Janeiro) and Imbituba (Santa Catarina) and I’m getting to know Itamambuca now. I’m staying at Guigui’s (Wiggolly Dantas) house so I’m happy that I qualified.”
Thiago Camarao (BRA) earned the day’s third highest single wave score with an 8.10 (out of 10) after coming off a strong event at the ASP PRIME in the Azores Islands in Portugal with an equal 3rd place.
“Each contest is important for me, but this one here in Itamambuca is extra special because I’ve had good results here,” said Camarao. “I was kind of nervous and anxious before the heat but everything worked out. I got two good waves and was able to use my strategy to hold on to the win.”
