GOLD COAST, Queensland / Australia (Thursday, July 14, 2011) ? Bede Durbidge (AUS), 28, current No. 9 on the ASP World Title Rankings, has been quietly building momentum throughout the early stages of the 2011 ASP World Title Race. Durbidge stumbled on the Gold Coast, exiting prematurely with a 25th place finish, but bounced back with a 9th at Bells before taking a 3rd in Rio. Now Durbidge is looking to make a statement to place his name among the top list of this year?s ASP World Title contenders as he enters the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay. Australia?s Surfing Life recently posted this write up from Bede as he shared his thoughts on J Bay and what the wave has brought him in the past. This? is his story?
J-Bay is always an epic event, and with the World Tour race back on again after a bit of a break since Brazil, I’ve got no doubt everybody will be frothing for what is going to be a key contest on this year’s tour. I have a feeling the title race in 2011 is going to go right down to the wire. I, for one, won’t be surprised if it’s decided at Pipe.
It’s been an intriguing start to the year. In recent times, you could pretty much count on the title being fought out among five guys. Not so this year – the depth is amazing, and I reckon any one of 10 surfers could take it out this season. Nobody has bolted away over the first three events and that is making it a more competitive tour than ever ? and tougher than ever to win.
My goal at J-Bay is pretty obvious: I want to shore up my prospects of being one of those 10 guys taking it down to the wire at Pipe. This has been my slowest and toughest start to a year for some time, but I’ve been getting better at each contest and it was pleasing to? get a third in Brazil and lift my confidence.
