HUNTINGTON BEACH, California / USA (Saturday, June 4, 2011) – Brett Simpson (USA), 26, who is currently in his sophomore year among the elite ASP Top 34, kicked off his 2011 campaign in fine form with an equal 5th place finish on the Goldie. After wrapping up Bells, the Californian bombed down to Mexico for a team photo shoot prior to the ASP PRIME event at Lowers and had an unfortunate fall that severely injured his knee, forcing him to withdraw from the Billabong Rio Pro. The ASP caught up with Simpson to see how his recovery process is going and what he’s been doing to keep himself occupied while out of the water. This… is his story…
Your goal was to be back in a jersey by J-Bay, so how’s the recovery process coming, are you on target for the Billabong Pro?
Definitely. I am feeling much better and on the climb back! I’ve had about five surfs and each one gets better and better! I’m glad to be back out in the surf. You don’t realize how much you miss it till you can’t do it!
What has your recovery process been like, what kind of rehab have you been going through and what exercises?
I have been doing pilates three times a week. It has been some of the best training I’ve ever done! I’m mainly trying to strengthen the legs but at the same time you’re using all of your body! It had been an eye opener!
Since you haven’t been able to surf, what have you been doing to pass the time?
Well I’m such a fan so I have been watching the events over in Brazil. It’s definitely tough to not be there but it’s cool to see who’s on their game! I’ve also been watching a lot of basketball and tennis. They have been keeping me busy and inspired! I can’t wait to get back and compete!
