Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil (Monday, September 20, 2010) – Bad weather and small surf in the  one-to-two foot (0.5 metre) range at Praia Mole prompted event officials to postpone the start of the Maresia Girls International for tomorrow, tuesday at 8am.

The Maresia Girls International is the second to last chance for the girls to get one of the six spots to get a place into the Women’s surfing elite, the ASP Women’s World Tour. 44 girls from 12 counties showed up today as they are all in the Round 1 of the competition that finishes Thursday and the day off gave them all an extra day to get familiar with the waves of Praia Mole.

“We still have plenty of time to run the contest, so we will try to run it in the best possible conditions,” Bira Shauffert, Maresia Girls International Contest Director said. “The wind is too strong and side shore today and hopefully tomorrow as the recent weather reports are predicting, the winds will be lighter and more offshore, giving us better conditions to start the contest.”

Bira also emphasized the importance of Maresia Girls International in this final stretch of the season for the girls.

“Many surfers who are here have not been to Bahia, they came just to compete in the six stars,” Shauffert said. “It is the second to last contest of the year with many points available and that requires much attention from us, so we’ll try to do our best to give them the best possible chance to compete in the best wave conditions.”

The Maresia Girls International is an ASP South America sanctioned event. The official sponsor is the Brazilian surf brand MARESIA and organized by Prefeitura Municipal de Florianopolis, Salva Surf Brasil, Federacao Catarinense de Surf e Associacao de Surf da Praia Mole. Co sponsor are: Praia Mole Eco Village, Jamaica Surf Shop, Tent Beach, Aloha Surf Shop, Overboard, Planeta Surf, Ecologica, Surf Trip, Sumatra, Bahamas Surf Shop, Bali, New Look Surfwear, Fissura moda Surf Wear, and Mabuya.
