Billabong Pipeline Masters

Stop No. 11 of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour

Banzai Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii

Dec. 8-20, 2008

Irons Brothers Eager to Take Top Honors at Billabong Pipeline Masters

Photo: Andy Irons will vie for Pipeline Masters title No. 5 this year.

BANZAI PIPELINE, Hawaii (Sunday, Dec. 7, 2008) – Three-time ASP World Champion Andy Irons (HAW) has won the Pipeline Masters four out of the last six years and will be chasing event title No. 5 when the Billabong Pipeline Masters Dec. 8-20, 2008 waiting period opens tomorrow.

Irons chose not to compete in the last two ASP World Tour events in Spain and Brazil, but will be back in action and ready to reassert his dominance at Pipe this week.

“I took a break for about a month and came back to the North Shore to train and get my rhythm back,” Andy Irons said. “The Pipe event has been in the back of my head for over a month now, and these past couple weeks of surfing and training have brought my confidence back to where it needs to be. I’m ready. I know I can win out here.”

Irons won the event in 2002, 2003, 2005 and 2006. Only nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) has more victories at Pipe– Slater won the event five times, earning top honors in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1996 and 1999. If Irons can clinch the title in 2008, he and Slater will share the record for the most victories at Pipeline.

Andy Irons’ brother Bruce has won a specialty event at the break and competing in his last event as a full-time ASP World Tour surfer, would love nothing more than to go all the way this year. Bruce won his first ASP World Tour event earlier this season in Bali.

“It felt good to finally get a win in Bali after all these years, and I’d be stoked to go out and win Pipe to finish off the year,” Bruce Irons said. “But I’m sick of people saying this is going to be my last event. I’m not going to be on tour officially, but I am still going to surf the Tahiti and Pipe events. You can’t get rid of me that easy.”

The concluding competition of both the 2009 ASP World Tour and the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing is unique in that 14 ‘Pipeline Specialists,’ one Vans Triple Crown Contender (Hawaiian Dusty Payne) and one Tahitian Invitee (Manoa Drollet) are seeded alongside the ASP Top 45 and three event wildcards (Shane Dorian, Laurie Towner and Kalani Chapman).

The Hawaiian Pipeline specialists who qualified earlier in the year are: Dustin Barca, Makuakai Rothman, T.J. Barron, Ian Walsh, Marcus Hickman, Jessie Merle-Jones, Nathan Carroll, Ola Eleogram, Kekoa Balcaso, Daniel Jones, Mark Healey, Kamalei Alexander, Tory Barron and Dave Wassell.

Former event champion Jamie O'Brien (HAW) will replace an injured Neco Padaratz (BRA), Torrey Meister (HAW) is in for Jordy Smith (ZAF) who hurt his knee surfing Sunset and 1999 ASP World Champion Mark Occhilupo will replace Travis Logie (ZAF) who pulled out for personal reasons.

The top three contenders for the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing title (a three-event Hawaiian specialty series) are Dusty Payne (HAW), C.J. Hobgood (USA) and Joel Parkinson (AUS).

“Small surf is forecast for the first day of the waiting period, December 8th, with a new W/NW swell filling in Tuesday the 9th and building into Wednesday the 10th,” Randy Rarick, Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Director, said. “There is a 13 day window from December 8-20th with competition being held on the best three days.”

The Billabong Pipeline Masters will utilize the ASP Dual Heats Format from Round 1 through the Quarterfinals. It will be man-on-man from the Semis onwards. Surfers are seeded into the first three rounds, with top seeds not competing until Round 3.

Billabong Pipeline Masters Round 1 Match-Ups:

Ward, Florence and O’Brien Shine on Day 1 of the Billabong Pipeline Masters

Photo: John John Florence, the youngest Pipeline Masters surfer ever, at Pipeline today.

BANZAI PIPELINE, Hawaii (Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2008) – California’s Chris Ward (USA) took advantage of clean eight to 10-foot conditions at Pipeline to top score on Day 1 of the Billabong Pipeline Masters. Ward made two critical, late-drop barrels to amass a near perfect heat total of 19.90 out of 20.00 in Round 2.

“It isn’t the biggest day and it isn’t really that scary out there, it’s just pristine and there are pretty good ones out there,” Ward said. “You just have to luck out and get in the right position to get them. I was with both of those waves and those were two of the biggest sets in our heat. I was lucky to get under them and I was really happy.”

Currently rated 24th on the 2008 ASP World Tour, Ward needs to make heats to ensure his spot for next year’s tour. His heat win today will see him into Round 3 where the Top 16 seeded surfers on the ASP World Tour will make their 2008 Billabong Pipeline Masters debuts.

Round 1 and the first half of Round 2 were completed today. The first two rounds of the event featured low to mid range seeded ASP World Tour surfers, wildcards and replacement surfers.

Sixteen-year-old John John Florence (HAW) took full advantage of his last minute berth into the event to flare at his home break and eliminate ASP World Tour surfer Jay Thompson’s (AUS) hopes of requalifying for the 2009 tour. Florence found his way into the main event this morning when replacement surfer Reef Macintosh (HAW) was unable to fill in for injured Top 45 surfer Ben Bourgeios (USA).

"I woke up this morning and they said, 'You might get in,' and I was like, 'Really? Sick!’” Florence said. “I got in in Reef's spot and I am so stoked."

Florence, who has been charging Pipeline since he was 8-years-old, had his first shot at competing in the Pipeline Masters in 2005.  At 13, the North Shore local surfed the trials but did not make it into the main event. He will meet World No. 16 Kieren Perrow (AUS) in Heat 9 of Round 2 which will likely run tomorrow morning at 8.

"I surfed in the Pipeline Masters trials when I was very little but it wasn’t really that good because the waves were really big and weird,” Florence said. “So I am so stoked to be surfing out here when it is so perfect with four other guys out. There were some fun waves out there today."

Jamie O’Brien (HAW), the 2004 Pipeline Masters Champion, beat fellow Hawaiians in both of his heats today – Dustin Barca in Round 1 and Roy Powers in Round 2. O’Brien, like Florence, is in the event as a replacement surfer not as a Pipeline invitee earning a spot via the trials event held last January.

"I didn’t think I was actually in the event all year because I did not do well in the trials last year,” O’Brien said. “So it was kind of good I just found out I was in a couple of days ago so I was not really worried about it and it wasn’t on my mind. It would be a dream come true to win the event for the second time.”

Dusty Payne, who is currently leading the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing ratings, also surfed and won two heats today. Payne took out Tahitian Manoa Drollet in Round 1, Brazil’s Heitor Alves in Round 2 and is now into Round 3 where his Triple Crown Title competitors Bede Durbidge (AUS) and Joel Parkinson (AUS) are seeded.

"I am trying to not think about the Triple Crown,” Payne said. “I’ll just take it one heat at a time and hopefully end up on top with the crown on my head."

As the final competition on the 11-stop 2008 ASP World Tour, the Billabong Pipeline Masters is the last chance surfers have to cement their spot on the 2009 tour. Only 27 of the Top 45 surfers on the ASP World Tour requalify at year’s end with the remaining 18 competitors earning spots via finishing Top 15 on the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) or receiving one of three ASP wildcard spots.

Surfers sitting below the Top 27 cut-off, not competing in the event and thus unable to requalify are Ben Bourgeios (USA), Neco Padaratz (BRA) and Travis Logie (ZAF).

ASP World Tour surfers sitting below the Top 27 cut-off, failing to advance out of today’s heats and subsequently forfeiting their spots on the 2009 ASP World Tour are Daniel Ross (AUS), Royden Bryson (ZAF), Ricky Basnett (ZAF), Jay Thompson (AUS), Rodrigo Dornelles (BRA), Luke Munro (AUS), Mick Campbell (AUS), Roy Powers (HAW) and Leonardo Neves (BRA). World No. 43 Jihad Kohdr (BRA) also lost today, but earned via the ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS).

The scenarios for the 2008 ASP World Tour ratings possibilities can be found here: http://www.aspworldtour.com/2008/pdf/2008_aspwt_possibilities.pdf.

According to Vans Triple Crown of Surfing Event Director Randy Rarick: “After an excellent day of eight to 10 foot surf, we expect conditions to hold overnight and the winds should stay favorable. We expect to be able to complete Round 2 and go into Round 3 tomorrow.”

A call on competition status will be made tomorrow morning at 7.

Billabong Pipeline Masters

Final Stop of the 2008 ASP World Tour
Banzai Pipeline, Oahu -Hawaii
8-20 Dec. 2008

Aranburu Resists Local Domination at Pipeline, Picon Ends 2008 in Round 2

Photo: Aritz Aranburu (EUK) getting barreled at the infamous Banzai Pipeline and through to Round 2 of the Billabong Pipeline Masters. He will meet fellow ASP Top 45 member and local power surfer Pancho Sullivan next.

BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu (Tuesday, December 9, 2008) – The Billabong Pipeline Masters, final event on the 2008 ASP World Tour, was blessed with epic five to seven foot (1.5 to 2.5 meters) waves for its kick off today, with two of four current Dream Tour Europeans getting their start in the event and ending up with different fates.

Aritz Aranburu (Zarautz, EUK), impressed in Heat 6 of Round 1 against Pipeline renowned charger Kalani Chapman (HAW) winning the 40-minute encounter with a solid 15.00 point heat tally (out of a possible 20) to advance through to Round 2. Aranburu, who confessed earlier in the week how much he loved solid surf and hollow barrels, looked relaxed an comfortable during the battle and patiently waited for a Backdoor bomb to secure his advantage and win the battle.

"It was good fun to surf my first heat ever in the Pipemasters," Aranburu said. "I started off with a 9.33 but it is never enough here because if a bomb comes in the other guy can catch it  and win the heat. So I was stressing a bit before I got my second ride but then I found that righthander and no other set came until the end of the heat."

Aranburu, who has applied for an injury wildcard to remain amongst the ASP Top 45 in 2009, has nothing to lose in the Billabong Pipeline Masters and showed promissing determination and confidence before surfing in Round 2, possibly tomorrow, with the dual-heat format.

"I really like the new format because the heats are longer, 40 minutes instead of 30, and it definitely gives you a lot more options. I got my best wave while not under priority so the extra time we get can make a big difference."

Aranburu was one of two current ASP World Tour surfers in Round 1 to resist an impressive domination by the local big names, Dream Tour veteran and retiring surfer Danniel Wills (AUS) being the other one.

With the dual-heat format allowing organisers to run the Billabong Pipeline Masters up to Heat 8 of Round 2 today, Miky Picon (Capbreton, FRA) paddled out halfway through the day opening the second round in a clash against other local charger Kamalei Alexander (Oahu, HAW).

Picon, who led the heat for most of the fourty-minute decider, was eliminated due to a last-minute wave of Alexander that gave him a 0.23 point lead, enough to get away with the win.  Picon wraps up the 2008 season, his best ever, requalifying through the ASP World Tour after several solid results including a 3rd place finish in Brazil.

Jeremy Flores (Capbreton/New Caledonia, FRA), 20, currently ranked No. 10 in the world, will get his start in the event in Round 3 only, while last European surfer Tiago Pires should be surfing in Heat 14 of Round 2 when competition resumes tomorrow. There is still a serious doubt on Pires paddling out as the Portuguese man injured his back a couple of days ago and has yet to confirm his presence.

Hallo,

Billabong Pipeline Masters
Final Stop on the 2008 ASP World Tour
Banzai Pipeline, Oahu - Hawaii
8-20 December 2008

Injured Tiago Pires Pulls Out of Billabong Pipeline Masters

Photo: Tiago Pires (Ericeira, PRT) pulled out of the Billabong Pipeline Masters today due to injury and will now enjoy a break before getting back to work and start the 2009 ASP World Tour fully recovered.

BANZAI PIPELINE, Oahu (Wednesday, December 10, 2008) - Ater several exams and one MRI, Dream Tour rookie and current No. 30 Tiago Pires decided to pull out of the Billabong Pipeline Masters today before his Round 2 heat paddled out. Pires, who injured himself during a free surf at Backdoor more than a week ago, suffers from a pinched nerve at the back of his neck and was recommended not to surf at the infamous Banzai Pipeline with this weakness.

"It's not a big problem and I don't suffer a lot so there is no reason to panic about it," Pires said. "But it's the kind of things you don't want to play with, especially in such demanding conditions. The MRI did not reveal anything in particular but the doctors told me in the worse case scenario I could hurt my spine."

Pires, who is already guaranteed to surf on next year's ASP World Tour thanks to his No. 13 rank on the 2008 ASP World Qualifyng Series (WQS), waited as long as possible before pulling out.

"I wanted to surf in the event," Pires said. "I had this one thing at the back of my head about Marlon Lipke who finished No. 16 on the WQS and needed me to improve my World Tour rank so I could requalify directly which would have taken him in for next year. We are good friends and I wanted to help as much as I can. He sent me a very nice message so I know he's cool right now."

Tiago Pires, who will be one of a minimum five European surfers on next year's Dream Tour, will soon leave the North Shore for a well deserved break to recover and get ready for the 2009 ASP World Tour, after surfing both tours in 2008.

Billabong Pipeline Masters

Stop No. 11 of 11 on the 2008 ASP World Tour

Banzai Pipeline, Oahu, Hawaii

Dec. 8-20, 2008

Joel Parkinson Scores Perfect 20 at the Billabong Pipeline Masters

Photo: Joel Parkinson emerged from two deep barrels to earn a perfect 20 out of 20 heat total today. He is now the front-runner in the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing ratings.

BANZAI PIPELINE, Hawaii (Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2008) – Joel Parkinson (AUS) surfed a perfect heat to etch his name in the history books at the Billabong Pipeline Masters today. The current World No. 4 scored two perfect 10s to become the only surfer to earn a perfect 20 out of 20 heat total at Pipeline. Parkinson eliminated Vans Triple Crown front-runner Dusty Payne (HAW) in the process.

“I never thought I would get two perfect 10s,” Parkinson said. “It's not something you hear about every day, so I’d never really thought about doing it. I definitely claimed it like I had won an event for a second, but then I had to settle down and tell myself, 'All you did was make a heat!’ The next heat I paddle out for, I'll have to remember that."

Nine-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) is the only other surfer to score a perfect 20 out of 20. He did so in a 2005 final at Teahupoo, Tahiti to win the contest.

"Kelly did it in unreal fashion, mine was a just in a third round heat, but it's at Pipe and it's definitely something that when I grow old, I’ll think, ‘I did something in my career; my name's next to Kelly’s on that one,’" Parkinson said.

Parkinson finished fifth in Halewia and Sunset – the first two legs of the Vans Triple Crown of Surfing – and with Nos. 1 and 2 Payne and C.J. Hobgood (USA) losing today, has a good chance to take it out.

"That was a big heat for the Triple Crown for sure,” Parkinson said. “I have to start thinking more about the Triple Crown now. I have to forget about those 10s and start surfing heats from now on and not get too ahead of myself."

Slater surfed his first heat since clinching ASP World Title No. 9 today and was not surprised by Parkinson’s performance earlier in the day.

“I’d expect Parko to be the guy to do that.” Slater said. “He is such a magnet and not every guy can get in sync like Parko does; he gets on a roll and it gets scary. He will probably go on to win the Triple Crown judging from the heat he had today.”

Slater has won the Pipeline Masters a record five times, but is taking a very laid back approach to the event in 2008. He has already won five events of the nine he has competed in this season.

“A win at Pipe would be great, but to be honest with you, it doesn’t really matter at this point,” Slater said. “Not that Pipe doesn’t matter, but I’m just enjoying not having the constant contest stress. If I win it is definitely a huge bonus, but in a way, I’d like to see somebody else win – someone who hasn’t won it before. I’ve got a couple, Andy’s got a couple, Bede won one last year. Maybe it’s Parko’s year or maybe Brucey will pull off another win here to finish his year off.”

Bruce Irons (HAW) won’t win the Pipeline Masters this year. He lost a very close heat to Tom Whitaker (AUS) this afternoon. Irons has requalified for the 2009 ASP World Tour, but has unofficially said he will retire from full-time competition.

Defending Pipeline Masters and Vans Triple Crown Champion Bede Durbidge (AUS) is into Round 4 after eliminating wildcard Shane Dorian (HAW) today. The heat was Durbidge’s first of the event having been seeded directly into Round 3.

"To beat Shane was a feat in itself so it’s great to start off with a hard heat and get through that,” Durbidge said. “Hopefully I can get the momentum going and just keep going."

World No. 3 Taj Burrow (AUS) lost today which assures Durbidge a career-best World No. 2 rating behind Slater. Interestingly, if Parkinson wins the event and Durbidge loses in the next round, they would both finish the year with 6780 points.

"I looked at the ratings today and I think Taj was the only one who could beat me,” Durbidge said. “If Joel wins then we’re tied so hopefully I can just keep going and I won’t have to worry about it. It would be good to win the Triple Crown again as well."

Adrian Buchan (AUS) was another surfer who had a red-hot heat today. Buchan negotiated a tight battle to beat Danny Wills (AUS) 18.26 to 17.94. Wills has unofficially retired from ASP World Tour competition making the heat his last as a full-time member of the Top 45. Wills competed for 12 years and finished World No. 3 in 1998.

Despite losing to Shane Dorian (HAW) in Round 2, Dane Reynolds (USA) will round out the year the highest rated rookie in 2008, making him a likely candidate for ASP World Tour Rookie of the Year. Reynolds had to sit out two events this year because of sickness and injury, but will still finish in the top half of the ratings.

“It was kind of anticlimactic year there at the end which was kind of a bummer, but overall it was a lot of fun,” Reynolds said. “It’s been good, and being out of the last event injured, I had a chance to reflect and get excited about next year. I’m pretty pumped.”

Reynolds came into the year part of a highly publicized duo alongside Jordy Smith (ZAF) and there was a lot of speculation about who would end up rookie of the year.

“People were hitting me up about that all year and I was like, ‘C’mon, cool it,’” Reynolds said. “But if I do get it, it would be really cool, you only get one chance at that.”

ASP World Tour surfers not making the cut for the 2009 tour after losing today include Wills, Dean Morrison (AUS), who lost to four-time Pipeline Champion Andy Irons (HAW) in the last heat of the day, Pancho Sullivan (HAW) and Ben Dunn (AUS).

Sullivan, like Wills has said that he will not try to requalify next year and is retiring from full-time competition. Sullivan surfed on tour for three years; qualifying in 2005 at age 32 and becoming the oldest rookie in ASP history. Morrison will apply for a wildcard due to injuries which forced him competing much of the year – he has a strong case.

Only one more day of competition is needed to wrap up the event and organizers predict that bad weather will hinder running tomorrow but that Friday could see better conditions and swell. An official call will be made tomorrow at 7am.
