Billabong Pro Tahiti Called Off for Today, Probable Start in the Coming Days

Mick Fanning (AUS), 29, reigning ASP World Champion and current ASP World No. 6, will take on Adam Melling (AUS), 25, and Tamaroa McComb (PYF) in Round 1 of the Billabong Pro Tahiti.

TEAHUPOO, Taiarapu/Tahiti (Wednesday, August 25, 2010) – Event organizers for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, Event No. 5 of 10 on the 2010 ASP World Tour, have called its third consecutive lay day today, but with swell projected to build through the next 72 hours, the world’s best surfers could be on at Teahupoo in the coming days.

“This is probably the smallest day yet, as projected, and we’ve called competition off for the day,” Richie Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “The next couple of days are showing a build which could see us running, and the end of the waiting period is also looking more favourable than it was a few days ago. We’ll be back tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions.”

Surfline, official forecasters for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, are calling for small scale southwest swell will ease through mid week. A small, long period southwest swell will slowly build in Thursday and Friday, which will offer a slight increase in size and power.

A full breakdown of ASP World Title Rankings possibilities, including the ASP midyear field reduction, for the Billabong Pro Tahiti are available at ASPWorldTour.com

Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions for a possible 8am start.

When competition commences, up first will be Damien Hobgood (USA), 31, Kekoa Bacalso (HAW), 25, and Jay Thompson (AUS), 28, in the opening heat of the Billabong Pro Tahiti.
