ASP WLT Bear Pro presented by Jeep Remains on Hold Due to Lack of Swell

LEVANTO, Italy (Thursday, November 17, 2011) – The ASP World Longboard Tour (WLT) Bear Pro presented by Jeep called another lay day as the wait continues for signs of the current stable weather pattern to change. A small low pressure system is forming around the island of Corsica with event officials and surfers monitoring the progress and push of this possible upcoming swell.

Bear Pro presented by Jeep Contest Director, Julien ‘Vico’ Hamel has followed closely the weather charts and latest developments in the hope of being able to commence this 50,000$USD event. Hamel knows it is going to be difficult over the remaining days of the waiting period with the forecast on offer.

“We do have a little push coming up from Corsica generated by a small and weak 5 to 10, maximum 15 knot wind so it could be okay. The bad thing is we still have the high pressure system pushing it offshore with 30 to 35 knots of wind blowing it straight to Barcelona. So if we do have a push it is going to be weak and the wind from the coast is stronger than the wind from the sea. So if we have something it will be really hard for everyone.”

Event officials and surfers will meet again later today to follow up on their previous decisions to remain on hold and wait for any possible swell that may arise during the final days of the event.

“We have a surfers meeting again today so we can assess everybody’s thoughts and see what the surfers think of the new charts. We will see what Marco (Urtis) has to say about the forecast as he is a local here. That will be the point of having this last meeting to try and get one last chance to make a proper decision regarding what we can have as a swell forecast.”

Al Hunt, ASP International Tour Manager, is in constant contact with the surfers and officials with advice and instructions regarding what options are available to the event in terms of the minimum amount of time needed to complete the contest.

“Basically if we can’t finish the event or we don’t have enough time to finish then we won’t start it,” stated Hunt. “We only need a day and we can finish it easily in one day. You never know what might come. Even today there are signs of a swell even though it is nowhere near ridable but at least after a week we have something.”
