Halley Batista Takes Out Pena Pernabuco International Longboard Classic

IPOJUCA, Pernambuco/Brazil (Sunday, August 22, 2010) – The local hero surfer Halley Batista, has claimed The ASP 3-Star Pena Pernambuco International Longboard Classic finished today, in pumping 3-4 feet surf at Maracaipe Bay, South Coast of Pernambuco. In a rainy day he made his fans going crazy, by his surprising win as he is not a regular Longboard competitor.

The contest enjoyed a veritable wealth of conditions throughout the three-day event, culminating in exciting fashion of today’s modern Longboard surfing in front of a fanatic crowd crazily cheering for the local boy.

The top seeded Brazilian Shortboard surfer first defeated the former Brazilian Longboard Champion Carlos Bahia in the quarterfinals, next he dispatched the newly crowned South American Champion, Rodrigo Sphaier, and then he came to the final heat to face Jefson Silva.

“It’s a God’s gift in my life”, were Halley Batista’s first words up in the podium. “First I want to thanks the support of the Maracaipe people; they gave me the strength to win all the heats I was in. I didn’t expect to win, competing in a field filled only by Longboard specialists. But I think today was my day, and against all the odds, things worked on my favor, thanks god”.

Halley Batista was already known as the “King of Maracaipe” by his innumerous titles achieved in the Shortboard division, he does surf Longboards, but he had never made any final in Longboard contests, even more it’s being a  ASP contest like the Pena Pernambuco International Longboard Classic.

“Today was a special day for me; the waves came to me in every heat, so I was able to show all I know, I knew Jefson Silva could turn the heat at any moment, he surfs great, but the Maracaipe waves were on my side, and he didn’t find good waves to perform. Once I took the lead, I used all my priority knowledge to prevent him to find any winner wave. I don’t even know how to express all my happiness for this win in my home break, UUUHHHHUUU”, he shouted.

It even seemed that Neptune and all the Saints were cheering for Halley Batista. Jefson Silva had made the highest single wave score at the Pernambuco International Longboard Classic, a 9.5 in the semis against Jaime Viudes, it was the absolute highlight of the contest, he was also owner of the best performances so far in Ipojuca, but just in the final the waves were gone for him. The king of the hang tens and hang fives was overcome by the reentries, cutbacks and carving turns executed by Halley Batista, who also performed very well a strong variety of classic Longboard maneuvers to defeat your opponent.

“I found myself on drums,” lamented Jefson Silva. “Halley, being local here, as nobody knows the peak and got the best waves that came in the final. But I’m also happy for him, which is a warrior like all of us; he has made an incredible Longboard surfing this weekend and deserved the title. Of course I wanted to win, but I’m happy because my main goal I had already secured yesterday (Saturday), which was to qualify for the ASP World Longboard Tour “.

Jefson Silva and the South American Champion Rodrigo Sphaier will represent Brazil in the ASP 2011 World Longboard Tour (WLT). Rodrigo was another competitor that wasn’t able to find good waves competing against Halley. Sphaier had the highest score of the heat, an 8.17, but finished the heat with a total score of 12.84, not enough to beat Halley Batista’s combined score of 14.84.
